I have a 2 yo, male Giant German Shepherd rescue, Duke. I wanted a GSD so badly, but worried at age 71 it would be too much, but was in need of a Service Dog too. Duke has been a godsend, an answer to my prayers; soft, sweet, quiet, loving, low prey drive (except🐿️) & trains easily. He’s protective too. Very different from those I had in my 20’s; working line. He is doing just fine with condo life & runs with his pack in our dog park. He is protective of the more elderly residents in the park & walks next to them when they go to get their dogs at a distance or pick up💩 ❤to watch him. Massive shedder, but wouldn’t trade him for the 🌎 He’s good with my 14 yo blind, diabetic mini-dachshund, Lily.

I’ve been blessed to know both German Shepherds and Border Collies. They are loving, intelligent and loyal but they need to know who is the “top dog”. If you can be that alpha dog, then enjoy these very special breeds.

GSDs are the bestest dogs ever. I lost Rani my 9 yo GSD to cancer very quickly and was forced to put her down that same day I took her to Emergency. I am still struggling to this day, it has been 3 months. She was protective of her two cat brothers and us. I'm so happy Brooke finally found a forever home. The couple who thought she wasn't the right fit don't know how loving GSDs are and they are very intelligent. They lost their opportunity owning one by their choice!

I have a rescue shepherd / Lab and he really isn’t for the faint hearted with his reactivity issues . That dog has nearly broken me !! But I’ve stuck by him as he’s 7 now . He was picked up off a motorway in Spain with no skin on his paw pads . Full of giardia and worms . I was supposed to just foster him but he was returned by adopters due to his issues and I ended up keeping him. He’s a very loyal boy and has taught me a lot about myself . I’d say it’s been a journey for me ….but rescue shepherds on the whole probably need very experienced homes .

nobody talks about how the economic crisis effects animals. In the UK, what is going, & what is happening to all the animals being abandoned which people cannot afford to keep now ?? My parents, (and my), first dog was Skipper, our massive Alsatian & he was gorgeous & gentle. Used to sit by my, and my brother’s pram & guard us 😢😢

People need to understand that 99 percent of German shepherds will be reactive to other dogs and that is completely ok because it is part of their breed. Trying to change it may or may not work but dont judge a gsd for that because its their breed and thats completely fine. You dont need them to interact with other dogs. They just need to know who's their family and thats that. Period. If you want your dog to be social then get a golden retriever. Dont get a gsd and try to change its genes.
@gpierre9018 күн бұрын
Thats a nice ending, I love GSD's, just a pity its not easy to get one in my neck of the woods, perhaps its easier to get one in another country and fly it here with the airlines under AVI or Live Animal Freight.

Ppl on here not understanding the difference between working line and show line GSD. Look similar but VERY different characteristics. SL tend to reactive as they are breed to be shown and not actually guard dogs that’s why they never used for police or military. WL however not nearly as reactive , and in my experience not many. They have extra drive as so there for need to be shown leadership or they will take over. A GSD especially a WL , is not a novice dog regardless and in doing so you can be setting them up for failure . This is also a main cause of bites to owners and unfortunately being PTS

In most cases yea! There can be a genetic issue in some dogs. But the vast majority of issues is due to lack of proper training. I also disagree with his comment that GSDs don’t do well on a leash. That is purely a training issue.

Sadly dogs can also just be bred badly.
