It's actually ridiculous that this is even theoretically possible, much less able to be done this cleanly. Even considering that this Victreebel was pretty highly optimized, we're talking about a challenge that is massively disadvantageous to the player on paper. The disaster zone that is Red/Blue movesets and "Smart AI" makes for some hilariously bonkers situations.

For sure. It's one of those things that we can go into Erika at half the level of her own Victreebel and basically get a free win. And Lance basically being free at the end is kind of ridiculous.

Called it! Sleep + badge boost glitch is broooooken! I didn't realize how hilarious the stunting on Erika and Koga would be, tho. lol I also figured you'd be a bit more lenient with the order and you'd beat up Bruno as the 6th or 7th fight or so for easy XP. Sick run tho, amazing.

Yeah Gen 1 AI in general is very exploitable to do things like Minimum Battles, but Red/Blue gives a lot more potential free battles, which is why I find this so hilarious.

Yeah, Koga was probably the second most improved Gym Leader between Red/ Blue and Yellow (After Giovanni, because he was just pure trash in Red/Blue). Agatha is just random, but she can give you free wins just as often as she gives a major challenge.

I think in yellow Koga and Sabrina both have at least 1 Pokémon at lvl 50! I remember being way underpowered with a team of 6 all around 30-37 as a kid and being stuck for way too long as an 11 year old.

Yeah, Kogas Venomoth is Level 100 with Psychic, Leech Life, Double Team, and Toxic, and Leech Life is 4x super effective and STAB so it would do massive damage to Victreebel. Sabinra has Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam all at level 50 in yellow, but doesn't have smart AI

By the time I got to the elite 4 I traded Pikachu out for zapdos, and swapped out my venusaur for a Persian, because I noticed slash was a crit every time lol. Is it possible to miss a masterball in gen 1? Because I swear I have memories as a child of missing my master ball on mewtwo and being so upset lol

OK... after thinking it over, we need a rom hack of red and blue where you can easily do this challenge without having to input glitches and external hypothetical things (yeah like Pokémon stadium 2) And do it megaman style. Where you have to face the gym leaders in any order you please but e4 and champ cant be fought until you get eight gym badges

Sounds like a project. RBY Minimum Battles Version, RBY Super Minimum Battles Version, RBY Ultra Minimum Battles Version and RBY Solo Level 5 Elite Four Version. In each version we just remove more and more battles.

Probably hypno, unlikely for Starmie I think because it doesn’t have a sleep inducing move. Victreebell’s typing also helps a lot

Yeah, Hypno would have the issue of no badge boosting move until really late when it gets Meditate. Hypnosis is also less accurate. So I think it's possible, but not likely to be Victreebel level good

Do I sense a new category on this channel? It's going to be a very elite few who this is even on the table for, but it would still be fun while it lasts. It would also be interesting to see what routes they would have to take to achieve victory. It might even open up a few more doors if we're allowed to fight Bruno earlier, something to consider.

I still remember beating my friend's level 100 Charizard with my level 59 Victreebel... which was an HM mule that had Cut as its primary attacking move. Well, I say "beat", but it was asleep with approximately 1hp, which in Gen 1 is pretty much the same thing.

Victreebel is the only one I can think of in rby that has a sleep move that can last from 1-7 turns. Swords dance, the best move in rby. And then physical attacks and then a special stab. Nobody has anything like victreebell

Venusaur has the sleep, sword dance, body slam and growth. Unfortunately it doesn't have acid.

@divicospower9112 Venusaur DOESN'T have sleep, though. Yes, it learns Sleep Powder, but at Level 55 - too late to be taken advantage of in any minimum battles run except at the Elite 4, and too late to come into play at any time in this particular challenge.

Yeah, Venusaur was honestly among the worst Minimum Battles Grass types due to Growth and Sleep Powder being so late. Exeggutor starts with sleep, Oddish at least gets sleep fairly early, Bellsprout crushes with early Sleep and Growth, so Venusaur is maybe better than Tangela?

Yeah, I've heard discussions from Gym Leader Matt, Jrose etc on why they think Red/Blue is still challenging in their formats - either speedrunning or trying to beat Agatha consistently, but overall the difficulty is much lower than Yellow unless you're overlevelled

I likely stopped because I was more using Swords Dance to badge boost clutch speed than get max Attack, but I could have made a mistake somewhere. I am low vision, so sometimes a 5 looks like a 6 to me....

Yeah, it comes from so many runs where I lost all my minimum battles progress to failing to save. Add in my baby sometimes crying and I have to get up to take care of him, I get super paranoid that I didn't save and will have to restart the run...m

Yeah , I use Shuckie. The problem is that I then would have to replay the run in my overlay, but my current overlay implementation has a lot of hotkeys that I use for transitions while doing live commentary, so it would be a lot more time to go back through the run to that point to correct things. I am planning to work better compatibility into my overlay update though.

Isn't that just a normal glitched speedrun? Death fly, get a glitched shop, achieve item underflow, set your cell to hall of fame. Alternatively, if you don't even respect the rules for a glitched speedrun, you could even use save corruption to beat the game before you even get your starter.

Yeah, we've actually done some level 5 no exp challenges before, there's a whole playlist. The issue there is that we need Toxic strats and Substitute/Bide/Double Team strats to do it, because Razor Leaf won't do enough.
