If you listen carefully, the cultural differences are apparent. Here in the United States, we tend to analyze these issues - such as nails, no nails etc. - to the n-th degree. (Look at some of the chat boards about intense equipment preoccupations . . . .) Conversely, I hear Evangelina Mascardi making an argument for a more holistic approach and finding your voice with the instrument and leaving these preoccupations aside. In any event, this is a wonderful interview and, Brandon, you have a great KZbin channel. Your hard work is an invaluable resource and is appreciated!

I don't think this is particularly a cultural difference, more so a difference in perspective or priority.

I was lucky enough to be a student of Evangelina Mascardi for almost 4 years. The amount of information and ideas I got from her were foundational for my development as a musician, and forged the way I think about classical guitar and performance, in and out the ancient music repertoire. I have met her far before she “became viral”, and what I learned from all this story it’s that when you’re good and aware of what you are doing, you’ll reach what we call “success”. And that was as well another great lesson I got from her, and life.

Brandon, thanks for this rich and interesting interview with Evangelina - she's an obviously wise teacher and player. As a guitar student, I appreciated so many of her musical and technical suggestions - like the way she conceives of the weight and energy of her right hand on the strings. Also - how she maintains her sense of self quite independent of what others think about her or her playing (RE: the world of people's comments on KZbin videos). Keep up the excellent work!

Congrats! Great interview, with lots of tasty and important subjects covered with sensitiveness. As a matter of fact, Evangelina is an outstanding player and teacher. I had the fortune of having her as my student in her last period as a guitar player, and during her transition to baroque guitar and lute. Those 3 -4 years were of great work, where she showed, despite of being a 17 years old girl, a huge amount of talent, determination and flexibility. I am very proud and happy of her great career and enormous and well deserved achievements. And very thankful to Brandon because of your great work!❤

Thank you so very much, Brandon, for this outstanding interview. It's not often we get a chance to hear so extensively, albeit informally, a great musician unfold her blend of philosophy, technique, and musical understanding. Everything Evangelina Mascardi has shared with us is to be pondered, dreamed upon, and our own musicality weighed against it. This is how one grows!

OK, I'll say it. I LOVE Evangelina Mascardi! Of course I thought she was my discovery when she popped up on my feed. Then my wonderful teacher Isabella Abbonizio (another pal of Frederic Zigante, BTW) told me to check her out. It was like walking into the Barnes and Noble bargain annex on lower Broadway in the late '70s and hearing Eugen Dombois playing Bach on the baroque lute for the very first time. Evangelina makes this old hobby guitarist very happy!

I believe nails for playing guitar didn't become standard until the late 19th-early-20 century. I believe Tarrega played without nails.
@brandonacker7 ай бұрын
I think the phenomenon of 99% of people playing with nails is a very modern phenomenon post-segovia. Many 19th century guitarists played without nails. Both techniques have co- existed happily since at least 1600 to the 1900s.
@8888Rik7 ай бұрын
@@brandonacker Yes. When I first began playing in the early 1960s (at the ripe old age of 11), there was still a lot of talk about the "old-timers" who used to play with just their fingertips, and people were close to baffled how they could do it. Segovia's silvery tone, really a function of his fingertip shapes and the quality of his guitar, convinced people that nails, carefully trimmed and tended to were vastly preferable. Segovia was a very big deal back then, as much due to his ubiquity as anything else. The John Willamses and David Russells and others hadn't yet appeared with their great technique and more careful attention to tempo.
