What a work of art these old mechanical games were, they must've had a lot of fun (and perhaps a little frustration!) designing and building them.

It always seems wild to me that a mechanism with so much mechanical complexity, and presumably a lot of hands-on assembly at the factory, was cost-effective to build for something so frivolous as arcade games. Certainly wouldn't be today.

That’s true and I think that’s why arcade games became more prevalent as well because Pong was so much cheaper to manufacture.

I've been enjoying this restoration! It really takes me back; I grew up in the Chicago suburbs in Cook county. My father worked at a tavern, and later, as a coin-op service technician. I remember playing on many vintage EM arcade machines, most of which were manufactured by Chicago Coin; Many people forget that the Chicago area was a major hub for the arcade industry, with companies like Seeburg, Rock-Ola, Chicago Coin, Bally, Miday, Willams, Gottlieb, Stern and Happ based out of the area. Electromechanical arcades beyond old Pinball machines don't get much love these days!

So good to see this lovely machine being restored. Those old mechanical games were a different experience to the arcade cabs, but equally as mesmerising to a young kid. I love that it was 5P a go, too! 😅

Can't remember if I've said before, but I remember playing this in an arcade in Hornsea, was shoved in a dark corner with all the old games that nobody was interested in. Really enjoyed this mate, great to see the project progress.

I watched a repair shop recently where Dom re-chromed something with a home kit, basically a kit of materials that stripped the rust then chromed it in a plastic tub, worked well, maybe worth a look if the spray paint doesn’t work.

Great vid. Lazy and slow way to get rid of the existing paint and rust is to dump the parts in a vinegar bath for a couple of weeks. Works wonders and the paint literally just slides off in one piece. Handy if you don't like using paint stripper or don't have any tools.

When I'm using chrome paint on my Tonka's I use a grey primer followed by gloss black and then the chrome paint.

Just a note. The reason why chromers charge so much is because what they usually get from people will rarely look good chromed the way it's received. It needs to be mirror polished before any plating can begin, and what they get, is rarely in that state. You might want to consider nickel plating, which is fairly simple and can be done by any regular person. Again, you need to spend the time to remove any rust and sand using progressively finer grits, and finally polishing using a buffing wheel and compounds. Once the part looks like you want then you can electroplate nickel onto the part. There are many good videos on KZbin showing that process. After plating, several coats of clear lacquer will provide protection for years of enjoyment.

Enjoying your restoration and your observations about how the game works. I have restored this game about 5 years ago and it is performing well to this day. A few comments if I may. 1. The game external facing metal work is chrome plated including carriage bolts, brackets and the speaker brackets and grill. Try to chrome as much as you can as this bling is not usual and makes the game standout. 2. Before you put all back together the gunmen and the base should be separate from the below gun bracketry (GF-3009 Gun Support) so you can remove/install by removing the two M4 screws in the men plastic base without removing the playfield. 3. Do you have a parts manual and Rev B Schematic? I could send you copy if you do not. 4. the speaker sound is superb. Not like a lot of games stateside. The capacitors etc. may need changing out if outside their limits but still sound great. 5. Do not be surprised if the game play counter has gone around the clock at least once. The game is a tank regarding wear. 6. The small scanning disc (GF-1403) got a lot of wear but there are still available. 7. The score Step-Up units (S-91747) have a tiny spring about 0.007"-gauge wire and about 8 turns if (I remember) that is critical to the stepper clocking consistently. Easy to remake if they are stretched like mine. Waiting for the next installment. Regards Steve J.

Awesome job! When I lived in Germany in the early '80s I could get 1 pound in 5 pence pieces for 4.5 dm. The 5 pence piece and the 1 dm piece were so close in size and weight that I could play arcade games/slot machines using a 5 pence piece instead of one full Deutsche Mark. That's about 20 plays as opposed to 4. I was such a rebel :)

Such a joy to see this level of care and attention in restoring a cabinet that's so tactile and mechanical. It really does seem closer to a an old pinball machine in its inner workings when compared to a in comparative terms a more modern microchip based arcade machine. It's bit before my time but I love to see these really old machines brought back to life for everyone to enjoy, you are doing the community a massive service.

Considering the amount of work involved in metal prep for rechroming (cleaning, polishing, prep), then the chroming process itself, and the final clean and polish.. £175 was actually quite a reasonable price for a one-off job.

For the chrome paint, you could try a gloss black under it and maybe a lacquer over the top. I've seen this improve the shine.

Not sure about the durability , but to me the best chrome out of a spray can is by Revell. Not cheap its 30 euro's here in the netherlands . I use it on vintage toys and it works perfect. Theres a few video's on youtube of people comparing it with other brands and it by far is the best out there.

Hello, its lovely to see you push so much time in to this old machine from a very different era of build quality and technology. I've tested lots of different chrome effect paints, and the best one by far is VHT Plate Finish Chrome Plus VHTSP5251 - it gives a very good finish. Lay it on very heavy, just on the verge of running and its drys to a pretty shiny finish.

@@TheArcadeArchive I think that is a very good call! That VHT paint is the best I found out of about 12 different chrome effect sprays, but its not a patch on a real chroming job. The down side is though that the pitting really stands out when you mirror chrome it, so its all in the prep.

RetroKrazy did a great video on plating old C64 metal parts that was very impressive and gave great results, cheaper than what you were quoted and hopefully better than the spray. Also would give you a one up on Neil as I don't think he's tried that with his trash to treasures 😂

You mentioned that these were around for at least 10 years. I would say even longer because I can remember one of those in the harbour arcade in St Ives Cornwall. I was born in 79 and if I can remember it reasonably clearly it must have been around until at least the mid 80s when I was 5 but I feel like I remember playing it at the age of 10 which would make it still functional after 20 years. I can't wait to find time to pay a visit to you and play it again.

Just a though if you have such a thing again. I would sand down those chrome pieces and nickle plate them it is pretty cheap to do and last so much longer and you can polish it up like chrome to an amazing brightness.

Chroming at home isn't that hard or expensive (I bought a kit for less than 100 US dollars and it will last me a long time), the chemicals needed can be ordered through Amazon, the equipment you most likely already have.

You should try nickel plating those chrome pieces by electro plating them. Seems like a pretty easy and not terribly expensive process, if you have a power supply. And once you've got the stuff to do it, I'm sure you'll have a ton of stuff around the museum to electroplate later on anyway.

As I've been trying to use cotton swabs to clean delicate or fiddly stuff, I'm finding myself annoyed by how easily they shred up and fall apart. Theres gotta be something better? Wish they made more durable swabs.

Hi Alex, since you mentioned about painting miniatures, and you're saying about chroming the metal pieces, I had a thought about another video i saw on KZbin by Adam Savage of Mythbusters fame, painting his Iron Man Mk1 Costume - he takes a number of "Molotow Liquid Chrome" and mixes it for airbrushing onto the suit and applies it - before the suit is weathered back down, the suit really does look like a Chrome job - Might be worth a shot?
