Yup, same here! It really makes things so much more authentic and actually gives a good idea of the skills of the normals. It was really getting to the point where the dishes were getting so complicated and fancy, that there's simply no way a real "normal" would actually come up with it or be able to actually make it. (Yes, I know that after all this time and experiance the normals aren't exactly "normal" anymore, but still I think my point is valid)

Honestly, I think Jamie's would be my winner from a cooking standpoint. Barry's was a fire hazard. I'm sure his flavors were great but it just seems toooo dangerous to do what he did (the cooking in the toaster not the salmon, the salmon was fine given it's quality). But maybe I'm overthinking it, haha. Mike's is great! I love me a good pie/soup filling with potatoes, it's just very comforting and cozy. Definitely no losers here!

I can't believe Barry won by ruining a toaster😂Might have been able to get the barbecue effect he wanted with that microwave burger gadget. Mikes definitely seemed the most achievable both in terms of technique and BUDGET for the widest variety of people, and I really enjoyed Jamie making use of a type of dish to cook in we don't usually see. I do wonder if he could have achieved the same effect in a regular ceramic bowl though, since it wasn't going onto a fire.

The look on Kush's face throughout, absolutely priceless. Of the three, Jamie absolutely knocked it out of the park visually, and would probably be my winner for the brief of "You made this with THOSE?". Mike's definitely looks doable by anyone, which when you're limited in equipment, is what you want, so his would be the winner in "Most Likely to be Edible if made by a novice". Barry was... unique. Without being able to taste it, I cant rate it as highly as Ebbers, and frankly I fear for the state of peoples' kitchen equipment. Definitely do not attempt in an AirBnB.

I gotta say I'm really liking the fact that you guys are actually telling us straight out who came up with idea and also giving us the chance to see what they guys would come up with on their own, without any help from the food team. It's really fun and it makes everything feel a bit more natural and authentic IMO. Knowing that the normals worked with team of amazing chefs and foodies to come with their recipes on in these competitions always felt kind of like cheating or a cop-out. I think the guys are at the point where it's time to take of the training wheels (at least sometimes), and show us exactly what they're capable of. But I think be able to see exactly what they alone come up with gives a better idea of what an actual normal would do in that situation, which also gives the us the opportunity to find out where we go wrong and how exactly to improve or correct those mistakes. Plus, in general it's just WAY more entertaining this way I think!

@Ishlacorrin

@@TheSongwritingCat Agreed, Jamie's dish impressed me the most because the balance is hard to do when a Microwave is involved, they tend to deepen certain flavours while cooking in a completely different way to the stove top. Wait wait wait. So in a challenge where the premise is "what can you COOK with only a toaster, kettle and microwave", the winner is given to the dish which is normally mostly served raw (Sashimi), which barely saw a kiss in the toaster, left to marinate in a warm sauce, and some half burnt half non-warmed tortilla wraps. I'm sorry, did I miss the COOKING element here? Barry's previously won with a basic pasta dish (which in a video months before he said he makes regularly) in a challenge that called for creativity and now this one with something that actually doesn't require any cooking to taste good? At this point, the next challenge will be creating and cooking the most inventive vegan dish, which Barry will win by slapping all of Ben's allotment veg on a plate raw (and probably unwashed), because "it's just so fresh and there's nowhere to hide". Mike made a great dish which is actually really practical to make under the premise of "not having a hob to cook on", which I reckon should actually be tried. Sure, Jamie just reheated the couscous as per packet instruction, but at least what was served with the meat and toasted bread could be considered as substantial meal. Barry's came across as a snack which, really, didn't require much of anything. Granted, I can't taste any of the food, but give me Mike or Jamie's dish every day of the week, and if I were to choose a winner; probably Mike, because it's a hearty meal with some good hacks and, you know, actually cooked.

Agree. The only reason the dish was safe to eat was because he used expensive sashimi grade salmon. Barry's - impractical not really hitting the brief, the other 2; practical meals to make with limited equipment.

@@h.o.y.o maybe but it seems way less impressive to serve dish that is mostly the same raw compared to something that has to be cooked with limited equipment. If that wasn't sashimi salmon barry just made food poisoning on a skewer.

i heavily disagree with the result here, while barry's might have tasted good within the scope of the challenge mike's is the most achievable. i feel like considering the whole point of this is to see what you can cook with limited tools sashimi-grade salmon feels like cheating?

I love that you tell us when the recipes are from the food team or not. I think the boys did a great job.. I would never attempt to cook anything in a toaster, so very creative Barry! Jamie’s looked really good and Mike’s looked so good (minus the mushrooms).. like Ben said, a bowl of comfort. I’d love to see the food team/Ben do this!! Reminds me of cooking in my college days, with nothing but an electric skillet, and an electric percolator coffee pot. Didn't even have a toaster, and it was long enough ago that microwaves were still too expensive for college dorm rooms. I still managed to make some really great meals, and fellow students would even buy me food as long as I would cook theirs for them, too. Lots of quick rice, and pastas, and cheap meats fried up. Fun times, and all these dishes looked and sounded great. Even if toaster salmon sounds very sketchy!

Jamie was my winner. I like the idea of “cooking” the couscous in the Tupperware. If I’m making food and I’m not at home, I want the least amount of items to clean up with the best flavors I can get.

I'd love to see them do this exact challenge again, with their same recipes, this time knowing what did and didn't work, and adjusting to suit. rather than moving on to entirely new recipes? this might replicate how we cook things at home? gradually refining etc.

I have to agree with Ben today they are all winners. Pretty impressive for what they had for appliances. I do feel Barry’s was the most creative as far as cooking method. Mike’s looked like home cooking comfort food goodness and Jamie’s chilli in a bowl like Barry said with a tortilla, some yogurt and a few greens would be as well. Well done guys.
