We visited Trattoria Amici Miei in Milan and tried the city's typical dish: cotoletta, a very thin chop of meat that is breaded and panfried. The restaurant makes the dish in such a big size that it has been renamed "elephant ear."

I think it's more of the filler material, the breading and cheese making you feel overly indulged, for lack of a better word? You're not exactly full, you just can't stomach another bite without puking. There seems to be nothing to cut the taste of the oily, cheesy breading. Some sauce or gravy perhaps? You'd get kinda sick of it quickly.

I'm Milanese and I can tell you that before the war (and the subsequent immigration from southern Italy) in Lombardy we used butter to cook, or for breakfast and not olive oil ... Pizza was unknown in Milan and we ate hamburgers that we called "svizzere" (literally Swiss) and potatoes ... "Mediterranean" dishes were still seen as something exotic when my father was a kid... He told me once he could remember the first "pizzeria" open in Milan in the 50's and was so...weird... ;)

This is awesome! I'm happy to learn something new today! I did not know that Italy has a bigger version of the German Schnitzel. OMG! It's so big they have to serve that on a platter and it's made of Pork! I thought that Schnitzels were just limited to Chicken when I was in Israel. Then when I saw a breaded meat bigger than the plate it was served with at a Biergarten, that was the time someone had to explain to me that Schnitzels are originally made with beef and since that is not a Kosher meat. The Jewish people cooks Schnitzels with chicken.

No no no, beef is kosher, pork isn't. The reason israelis use chicken and not beef is that many years ago, when people just came to Israel, beef was too expensive, and that's why we use chicken. Due to kosher reasons we fry it in oil and not butter.

What the restaurant manager said is incorrect. I think they are the only ones who sell a pork cutlet as a typical Milanese dish. The Milanese cutlet is only from veal and, yes, fried in butter. Traditionally it is high and only recently "the elephant ear" has been created (only veal). There is always a dispute whether the Milanese cutlet or the wiener schnitzel was born first: there is a document from 1148 that reports the cutlet in a menu of the religious of the basilica of Sant Ambrogio. Probably the Austrians brought this recipe home when they ruled Milan.
