OK, first comment from me. I love the very first showing of titanium, where it is visually explained why no-one actually makes swords or knives out of titanium. F-ing brilliant. Also, someone was incredibly concerned about mass to make cut outs in a titanium blade. It's much bulkier than a sword should be, but I'd wager it's still lighter. Background on Aluminium Oxide, aka Aluminum Oxide. It IS very hard and durable. Anyone with Al frame windows can probably attest though, that a thin coloured coating is no where near indestructable. Much more resilient than plain Al though. But, doped version (aka Al Oxide with impurities of various types) have common names as crystals, like ruby, emerald etc. Now, the real challenge is "forging" Tungsten. :)

Pirates may have mastered special weapons. Design and it's funny that my org has connections to both European and Asian piracy going back. Great work! Quick question, did you have to heat treat the titanium blade in the same way you would for a steal blade? Or does titanium not need heat treating?
@DopetheWind2 жыл бұрын
Titanium is often "aged". Sort of similar to quenching steel, titanium is heat soaked in a furnace for a precisely determined amount of time (referred to as "in solution"), then quenched in a prescribed fluid. Immediately after quench, the part is "aged" by maintaining temperature for extended periods of time (2-24hrs) at a lower, but still very high temperature, then left to cool as slow as possible. Also unlike steel, the times, and temps of each process varies drastically based on alloy.

Anodizing aluminum gives you a hexagonal structure of aluminum oxide that builds up on the surface. That aluminum oxide is technically the Anodizing. But it's transparent, so adding the dye fills those hexagonal cells oh, and then the last operation basically closes the hexagons off. Like a tattoo. If you were to anodize the titanium, you rely on a different method called interference light refraction to develop colour. Light that hits the oxide surface first, bouncing some light back at your eye, then what's left of the light hits the actual metal surface and bounces back, and depending on how thick your oxide layer is you can get a rainbow of colours as you match both the oxide and the metallic surface reflected light at certain intervals that we might call red or purple or green or whatever colour

Cool that you guys are getting some big name builds with the budget, really cool to do a Ti build. Titanium has the lovely property of work hardening! You can basically end up with a machinable piece that requires a metric crap ton of coolant and diamond tools to machine.

Well dang, this makes twice I have seen Matt grind a Titanium blade. Once years ago they actually did the katana from Blade and now in this video. I would really like to meet Matt and Illad in person, if for no reason but to shake the hands of the men who have taught me that anything is possible when you put your mind to it. Matt, Illad (?) you two are the real deal, Masters of your chosen craft.

Guys you need to get some of those synthetic body’s that use ballistic gel to hold artificial bones and organs and are see through. Would be awesome on the demonstration stage. Even forged in fire will use pig ribs or a carcass for cutting. But then again, that fruit and water bottles can be dangerous…😜. Awesome job. Love all the tech like linens in the blade and handle.

Those ballistic gel dummies are super pricey and cutting meat grosses some people out.

Ilya, the “slot shaming” joke was childish…and I respect you so much more for saying it 🤣. That was a funny joke, but it caught me off guard and that made I hilarious. Now it’s time to start the video again because I had to leave this comment. You rock, brother.🤘🏻
