Matt, I'm 72 and my dad taught me from a young age.. ALWAYS, ALWAYS take out the spark plugs and add 1/2 cup Marvel Mystery Oil to each cylinder of a stuck engine. Leave it for 24 hours then begin to turn slowly so not to break a ring. He was a die hard Flathead man when he came home from WW2

I'm 72 too, my dad was exactly like yours. Was employed at Willies Motors. My dad used Liquid Wrench to loosen pistons. I just disassembled the engine.

Can't understand the thought process to completely fill up the cylinders with oil. I would have just put in enough to cover the top of the pistons to soak it down into the rings. 2 ounces at most.

This has got to be one of the nicest vehicles in your collection, thus far and I would argue that you should keep it as original as possible and restore it as it was back in the day. Just a suggestion, thank you.

Morning Matt, man, I sure would like to have that truck!!!!! I would get it mechanically sound & drive it! One thing I found with vehicles that have been sitting for years is the crap in the oil will settle to the bottom of the oil pan, people pull the dipstick & are amazed how clean the oil is, not really, I bought a 48 KB8 International truck out of a scrap yard, I was told the truck ran, maybe it did but not for years, I pulled the pan & there was 1/2" of crap in the pan, long story short with a tune up, carb rebuild, truck ran great, please....do not let anyone rat or street rod this.truck!!!!! Build on Dudes!!

Matt, For future reference. Put the hand crank in the socket at 7 or 8 o’clock. Put a floor jack under the crank and put pressure on the crank. Let it sit for a few days after cylinder oiling. Mike is right. Pull the head and hone out the rust ridge. What wowee truck. Build the express pickup box and keep it for the shop gopher. Stock model As are not fast, but they are a blast to drive. The new Irontrap logo over the patina on the door would look great! Goof off might take off the red paint. It works on hardware store paint, not on modern uerathanes.

Hey Matt, Mike We all know you are going to sell it ! It's just a matter of how soon. It is currently a new toy to play with, but you do have other toys that need your attention. It would be fun to play with just to be able to drive an original stock 28/29 model A. It is an experience few of us will ever have. Pulling the head sounds like the first thing to do. Clean up what you can. Put the head back on. Make a new fuel line which we can see is missing. Put an inline filter in the new fuel line as we know it is going to have crap in the tank. The Metalic snap you heard may have been a ring breaking, a stuck valve poping closed or the starter bendex snaping back as it may have been stuck to the flywheel from a previous atempt to start it. Good luck with it and thank you for letting us almost be there for the fun. Live Long, Be Safe and Well

The bed you're referring to is the type 89A, a bigger version of the '28 to '30 A pickup bed - 84 inches long by approximately 48 inches wide on the 131" wheelbase. Same as the Walton truck.

Matt - that marvel mystery oil really needs to soak for a few days -this also helps with badly needed lubrication when it does crank over . Started my ‘30 Model A after sitting 34 years in about 30 minutes. Of course I had poured a generous amount of oil in each cylinder and turned it over SLOWLY with the plugs out when stored. And when preparing to start it I had added the Marvel Mystery oil about 4 days ahead. Gas tank was shiny clean so poured in a couple cups of fuel and it started right up and even idled smoothly. The carb float stuck soon after, so I swapped in another carb until I could clean up the other one.

Matt I use ATF or Marvel and laquer thinner mixed. This thins the ATF/Marvel and allows it to penetrate better in my experience. The better penetration softens the crud and will do less damage to rhe rings. It needs at least 24 hours to soak and sometimes more than once. Just some more information that may help. I appreciate all that you guys do to resurrect what you find.

Not sure if anyone mentioned in the comments but I’ve had good luck on the cylinders that have valves closed if I use compressed air and blow all the junk out of cylinders then pressurize the cylinders after the mystery oil. Helps push the oil around the rings an frees up faster. Awesome truck find. Keep up the great work!

Hey Matt ,just a thought and it does work . Heat up your oil just as hot as it would be if it was running . My Grandfather passed a long time ago ,but he passed on info to my dad . Granddad was The Top Mechanic in W.Tn. 1933. He won that award from Snap-On Tools with a toolbox full of Snap On tools . He says that the engine was most likely hot last time it turned over , plus it can't hurt.

I love everything about the old '28 truck, the stance, wheels, tires, fenders and cab. I'd say make it an ITG fleet truck with bed. Find someone like Lance and Wyatt in the old Turning Rust now Restored channel that can paint the ITG logo on the doors, but distressed so it looks like it's 90+ old. Can't wait for the next episode Matt and Mike.👍👀

This is what we did years ago on an old morris 8. We were doing a valve job on it. You take the head off clean up the surfaces and lay the head gasket down on something flat and clean it off. Then spray paint the gasket with silver galvanising paint both sides. 2 coats. Then refit it as normal. The galv paint fills any small imperfections and seals it up. It works. Give it a try. Its not as though is 22:1 compression like a diesel. What have you got to loose. I can of paint,1 hour, a can of brakleen and half a sheet of sand paper and you get to run the dingle ball hone through the cylinders and wire brush the valves so its all nice and clean.

Spent lotsa time unsticking engines so I will throw out some stuff that's worked for me. Use Marvel or ATF like you did then put a jack under the crank handle and partially raise the front of the vehicle. (some might even raise the wheels off the ground) Walk away and just take a gander every day to see if the wheels are lower. (might take a week, but only 4 days in your case) What you have now is carbon build up on top of the pistons which doesn't allow you to go beyond TDC. An old trick is to put the pistons mid way and flush the cyls with some kerosene. At that point fit a few inches of brake line to an air nozzle (enough to reach the piston) and blast the carbon with shop air in a circular motion while holding a towel lightly over the plug hole. All of the junk will fly out the plug hole. You might have to repeat the process or let it soak over night but you will get enough crap out to finally turn it over.

Hello Matt, This original AA truck is in great condition at 92 years old! It can only be original once. My vote is to only replace the parts like wiring, hoses, etc. to make it safe and mechanically reliable. You may want to install a modern gas filter in line before the carburetor. Those steel gas tanks can develop rust issues as the inside plating is worn away over time. Then, the engine will not run well. Thank you.

As cool as a vintage tow truck would be, I think bringing it back as a flatbed shop truck would be cool. A little patina, faded logo on the door, ya know? I'm still very active in the Model A Club and we have gotten many running that were in that shape or worse. They're tough. Surprises us how bad they can be and come back to life. MMO & ATF all good. Acetone & ATF good too. Best of luck.

I didn't go through all of the comments so someone may have posted this already, if that banger hasn't run for a long time there will be no oil in the main bearings, you can oil the mains and valvetrain by pulling the distributor and drive out of the head, and pouring a quart of two of oil down the distributor hole, that fills the valvechamber with oil and the oil supply tubes to the main bearings

Aerokroil the crap out of it. Into the cylinders, and down the carb or intake manifold. Let it sit for a week, just keep spraying it in there. This worked on my flathead that hadn't been touched for 28 years after being left outside.

I think you should build a box for it since you have the cool rear fenders for it .I think it would make a cool looking pick em up truck

I love the old beasts that were around when I was a kid. I should mention that you should never push down on the crank handle but only pull up. It might save you a broken arm especially if the spark is left in the advance position.

Did you squirt a little pb blaster down the plug holes? Or some MMO? I always do that on old junk that's been sitting, them you don't scrape dry rings up and down the cylinders.

Hello Matt, Do a tow truck Idea using an old (from the thirty's) Holmes wrecker hoist! That would be cool. You could use it to pick up other old car projects for the shop and channel. Greg

Sounded like a ring snapping. That is a nice truck. A tow truck would look great.

It's a keeper Matt. It would make a great shop truck. Let the 47 van go. Keep the AA. Do a quick semi-restoration. Put the flatbed back on it. Use rough cut lumber and paint it black. It wouldn't take much work to paint the whole truck. There's too many patina cars out there.

Matt , that truck would look awesome pulling a project or 2 home. Just a thought from the land that has no old vintage bargains of any type...especially now that everyone has put a cover tax on all the stuff they are selling.
