Reading your book, The Island of Missing of Missing Trees, sparked a conversation between my father and I. He is a naturalist and treats our little 'mbubo', like a second home. I had to ask him why. This is something I had never done in all the years I had lived in that very house, in all the years I and my siblings had worked in that very piece of land, planting and harvesting. And he said, 'my mother was buried in that land.' I didn't know when the tears came. But they did. Thank you for telling stories like you do. Thank you for having these conversations, and using words so beautifully. It heals❤️

Elif, you are a friend to many women like me who are embarking on journeys that are otherwise less embarked by most women for reasons that still baffle and sadden me. I want you to know that your words give me Umut, Ummeed, Hope. This video on inherited trauma has struck a personal chord.

Epigenetics can be very fascinating. My grandma had a stillbirth ( first baby) and once in a while she talked about it. It took me years to understand why she was so protective of my mom and us. She had the fear of experiencing the same pain/ grief again. My mom also had the same kind of anxiety to the point of suffocating us with her protective ways. I certainly feel some of it for my kids and grandkids. It might be a learned behavior or my grandma’s trauma left a genetic print in our DNA or both.
