This is why I made a promise to myself to help animal shelters take care of dogs that can't have homes because I know as a Muslim I won't be able to give a dog the life of a cat and that saddened me so I said I'll take care of their well-being instead. This animal unlike any other is renown for its loyalty to its keeper, will readily sacrifice its life to protect the safety and honor of that keeper, protects the home, your children, and your livestock. They are a blessing from God and nothing less. Showing kindness to an animal is an act of charity. In my eyes this balances out every time you feed your dog. In the early times of islam people had dogs either for herding/guarding/work OR people had dogs in the house to use for religious rituals or black magic. In the Persian empire and around, it was common to have a "housedog". This was a dog used for black magic. That is why islam has hadiths saying you can't have a dog in the house other than herding/ guarding/ work. These text not allowing dogs are about black magic. You can't keep a dog for black magic and rituals. That is what it means. The reason they did not specify "dog for black magic" was because that was the obvious. Why else did people have a "dog of the house" other then black magic? People do not specify what is common knowledge. And common knowledge was that digs in the house meant black magic and superstition. So they only specified the only other reasons that a minority of people had dogs: "Oh right, some people have a dog for guarding, herding or work in fields. Ok, that is allowed". There is nothing against dogs. Second, about the saliva, saliva is not considered impure acording to islam. Only: if a dog licks your plates or cups (that you eat of) then wash it 7 times. This has nothing to do with "impurity" it is just hygene especially in a time where there were stray/ wild dogs who could have rabiës. The Quran talks very positive about a dog who is one of the just youth. They hide together in a cave. In the time of the first muslims, dogs walked in and out of the mosque, nobody cleaned where the dogs had been, and people prayed when they were around. So you can keep any dog, just don't do black magic.

And those who spread such lies such as this man will have their punishment. The prophet PBUH is not allowed to prohibit or allow anything other than what Allah has revealed in the Quran. Thus the Prophet did not prohibit dogs and is just a fabrication of words put into the mouth of the Prophet PBUH by people with a malicious intent. Al-salamu ‘alaykum and Ramadan Mubarak for you and your family and loved ones. I pray that Allah bestows upon you the gift of peace, balance and beauty, and that God guides you to the righteous path. Thank you for your message and inquiry. You asked specifically about the hadith attributed to the Prophet that angels will not enter a place or an abode where may exist. The report to which you refer typically states that angels will not enter a dwelling that has dogs or pictures. In most versions, the narration of the report is attributed to Abu Huraira, with a few versions attributed to others. I thought I should respond to your message because of the opportunity to address this specific narration. There are several important points to make here: 1) All the versions of this report claim that angels will not enter a dwelling that contains dogs or pictures. By the terms of this report, it would follow that angels would not enter a place that has passport pictures, or drivers’ licenses or any document that has a picture. This is blatantly unreasonable and this constitutes a serious substantive problem with this narration; 2) This report is rather inconsistent with the Qur’anic narrative on dogs, in which we are told in the chapter on the people of the cave that they were a particularly pious group of people and the subject of a great miracle and blessing from Allah. And yet, the Qur’an is careful to point out that the people of the cave were accompanied by a dog, and that both humans and the dog were the subject of God’s miracle and grace. It would be rather incongruous to claim that angels did not accompany the people of the cave because they had a dog, or at the very minimum, it would be extremely speculative to pretend that a blessed and pious people mentioned in the Qur’an were denied the presence of angels because of their dog; 3) More importantly, this hadith makes a claim as to a matter of ‘aqidah (an article of faith) because it addresses a question involving the absence or presence of angels who are in the world of ghayb (or the unseen). Yet this hadith was categorized by all scholars of hadith to address a question of adab (a question of etiquette or proper social conduct). A hadith that could be considered credible enough to inform a question involving adab cannot be considered effective in matters involving ‘aqidah. Put differently, adab hadith or hadith that arise from the category of social etiquette are too low on the totem pole of authenticity and weight and thus, cannot be counted as effective or of sufficient weight to affect a question that involves faith. Hadith that establish articles of faith or ‘aqidah are typically mutawatir (of cumulative transmission) and therefore, of high authenticity, while hadith of adab, such as the one in question, are typically ahad (of singular transmission) and of much lower authenticity. To believe the angels enter or abstain from entering any particular place is a very serious matter and can only be established or negated by either the Qur’an or hadith of the highest level of authenticity. Hadith of singular transmission, such as the one in question, cannot either affirm or deny a matter involving the celestial world of angels and the like; 4) It must be recognized then that when a hadith of singular transmission is declared to be sahih (or authentic) in Bukhari or Muslim or the other collections of hadith, all that means is that in the opinion of Bukhari or Muslim, there is a 51% chance, ie. a simple probability that the Prophet actually said what is attributed to him. A 51% chance is insufficient to affirm or deny matters of faith (‘aqidah), such as where angels dwell or do not dwell. What militates against this hadith is that many of the hadith that are demeaning to dogs or anti-pictures or anti-women have been attributed to Abu Huraira. Whether Abu Huraira narrated these hadiths or not is a very big question. But in all cases, scholars of usul (jurisprudence) know that this typology of hadith, ie. hadith involving pictures, women or dogs, and prayer, angels or purity, are suspect, which means that one cannot just simply quote them as if they establish a truth or a fact, or as if they are indicative of Allah’s will without careful analysis and reflection; 5) As I have stated elsewhere, historically, dogs were an important symbolic issue in the past. On the one hand, they represented loyalty, faithfulness and companionship, but on the other, dogs were a source of a vicious plague, ie. rabies, and were also used by despotic forces to hunt down and torture political dissenters and accused heretics. So, we know for instance that not just in the Islamic world but in the medieval world generally, dogs inspired wonderful literary works, but at the same time, figured prominently in literature as a source of illness, death and torment. In the Roman world and the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties, political dissenters, after being executed, had their corpses hung with the corpse of a poor murdered dog. The reason the corpse of a dog was hung with the corpse of a political dissenter was that it was a way of insulting the corpse and claiming power and dominance over the tribe, family or clan of the dissenter. Interestingly, one of the major tribes that first supported the Umayyads and then later rebelled against them and supported the Abbasids were known as the tribe of Kelb (dog). My point here is that dogs featured symbolically in politics and social narratives. So, when we have a narration in which it is claimed that Abu Huraira claimed to have heard the Prophet say that angels will not enter a place that has dogs or pictures, we have an affirmative duty to inquire into the historical circumstance that might have put such a report into circulation. Interestingly, although medieval scholars were aware of the existence of this hadith, it was never relied upon in discourses on theology and faith until the modern age. This is largely the influence of the Wahhabi school, which does not draw a distinction between hadith of singular transmission versus hadith of cumulative transmission and similarly, does not differentiate between the strength of a hadith’s authenticity and its impact in questions of faith or otherwise; 6) It is a true tragedy that contemporary Muslims continue to rely on palpably unreasonable hadith such as the one in question. Quite simply, we should ask, why would angels not enter a place that has dogs? What singles out dogs as opposed to cockroaches, flies or mice? It is unquestioned in even the most conservative or Wahhabi schools that Muslims may own dogs for protection or hunting. So, are we to believe that angels will stay away from places simply because they have a guard dog on duty or because there is a hunting dog under a roof? Even the most Wahhabi of scholars have not dared to claim that angels will not enter a place that has a picture of the King or other members of the Royal Family. But yet, by the terms of this hadith, angels would have abandoned the entire earth because our earth is full of pictures everywhere, most obviously on the Internet on every personal computer. Are we to believe that because pictures on Facebook and selfies are zipping through the electronic atmosphere that angels will abandon Earth? 7) As I am sure you know, dogs are among God’s wonderful and beautiful creatures. We are taught that a prostitute was forgiven her sins because she saved the life of a dog, and we are taught that the people of the cave were selected by God for a great miracle, although as the Qur’an points out, they were in the company of a faithful and loving dog. What in these amazing and beautiful creatures would cause angels such aversion and disgust that they would stay away from a space that they occupy? I wish Muslims would use their intellects and hearts before they slander and vilify a great religion such as Islam, which is the truth that comes to us from God containing everything full of mercy, compassion and beauty. I am sure you agree that it does not sound merciful, compassionate or beautiful to claim that angels abandon a place where God’s creatures dwell, even if that creature is a mouse, a rat or a fly. It is my sincere belief that the reasons for this narrative are found in the creative symbolisms of history and in the political conflicts of the past (the same thing with many of the patriarchal hadith demeaning to women). And it is also my sincere belief that the Prophet (may peace and blessings be upon him) never uttered this hadith. I say this ever mindful that Allah knows best. Please ask God to forgive me my trespasses and bless us all. Wa al-salamu ‘alaykum, Shaykh Abou El Fadl

Salamalakum brother. That's great you listed so many reasons for why dogs are great etc., but what's the real reason you're doing so? Is it to pander to the West and claim that Muslims are tolerant of dogs? One thing you did get right was that dogs were in fact the source of a great plague known as rabies and they do in fact need vaccinations to prevent the spread of these diseases till this very day. Aggressive breeds such as pitbulls are also the source of many serious injuries and even death among mail carriers and children. Dogs also have no hygiene, they shed fur, and drool their saliva everywhere. My uncle owns a German Shepard and his yard is literally a shit mine, and you have to watch your step every time you go to his house. Dogs are utterly disgusting creatures and most breeds don't even come from nature, but rather they're mutations.

I dont know about that...up to you guys to think about it...i love dogs...doesnt mean i keep em as pets...i just be nice to them..as to all other animal...some even scared the shit out of me...so be respectful my friend..n furthermore when u kept them as pets...u locked them...u caged them..some would beat them...some even left them to die in a hot locked car without ventilation...so truly....how noble of these people who owned a pets to be taken as animal lover...if owning a pet doesnt reflect u as an animal lover...than what r u? Thats why i said...just as above...which is...eh.......

We are all tired of what we see in the news every day; war in Syria and Yemen, genocide in Myanmar, occupation in Palestine, famine in Somalia - to name just a few. It is both mentally draining and depressing to see the current state of the Ummah. One might naturally feel somewhat helpless and wonder why it has come to this. Whilst we in the West live in relative peace and security, we all feel the pain of our brothers and sisters around the world. Of course, given how much we are shown in the news, many have become desensitised to many of these issues, and only awaken when a new or big incident occurs, over and above the day-to-day suffering and “normal” levels of injustice or violence. Our usual reaction of anger and sadness often ends with a shrug of the shoulders, blaming our corrupt leadership and intending to make duʿā’ for those suffering or to make a donation. Or perhaps that level of anger might last slightly longer so much so that we attend a few protests and write to our local MPs to make our views heard, before slowly but surely getting back to normality. Life must go on, and we can only do so much after all. In a famous ḥadīth, the Prophet (sall Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) said: “The parable of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.”[1] These days our limbs are far beyond aching, yet the fortunate amongst us can only sustain the mentioned sleeplessness and fever for the shortest period of time. What then can we really do to make a difference? Duʿā’, sadaqah, protests and writing to our local MPs should not be belittled; these are all important steps to take. In fact, some of these may be amongst the most effective and powerful tools at our disposal. But by taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture, we see that Muslim lands are largely weak and divided, and many are run by corrupt rulers seeking to secure their own power-base rather than establish justice. Thus, though sending money to those in need may help deal with some of their immediate concerns, we should wonder what difference we can make to the fix the larger problem at hand. With a bit of self-reflection, we might even find that instead of pointing the finger at our leadership, it should be ourselves we look at and blame! How so? Imagine a world in which the vast majority of Muslims practiced the very basics of the religion; ensuring their five daily obligatory prayers were maintained; the obligatory fasts and charity upheld; and major sins avoided. Imagine an Ummah whose members, seeking self-improvement, continuously looked at their own shortcomings, instead of dwelling on that of others, or on differences of opinion. Is it feasible that such a nation would suffer as it is does today? Absolutely not. Reflecting on the ḥadīth mentioned above, surely a sound and healthy body would overcome any aching limbs with ease. However if the body is neglected, it is only natural that more and more ailments will arise. We need to each realise that every single sin we commit as individuals adds to the wider problem; harming the figurative body in the ḥadīth. Every time one of us neglects an obligatory act, that in itself is likely to have a direct impact on the Ummah as a whole, because when all of these are added up, what are we left with? The answer is a nation collectively living in disobedience to the Creator, and hence deserving of the leadership we face today. Thus it is imperative that we, immediately and without procrastination, work on rectifying our own relationships with Allāh and improving ourselves, in order to safely expect the dramatic turnaround we all desire in the Ummah. Our leaders are only a product of the societies they come from; if we want just rulers, let us strive to be just ourselves. And the ultimate justice is being dutiful to Allāh, and living according to how He decreed we should live. Allāh says in the Qur’ān: “Indeed, Allāh will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.”[2] If we are truly sincere in our desire to help our brothers and sisters in need around the world and see the status of the Ummah rise, we must take heed of Allah’s words and realise that we, as individuals, are very much part of the problem and can be very much part of the solution. Whatever our level of religious practice is, we all have faults and all need to work on ourselves. Striving to rectify our situations, or jihād, comes in many forms but begins with the basics of praying 5 times a day and abstaining from major sin, such as consuming alcohol, earning interest, back-biting, etc. Every time we are faced with a decision about whether to commit a particular act and we know it is displeasing to Allāh, let us remember that we are not only harming our own Hereafter, but also adding to the suffering of others in this world. Perhaps one may be comfortable being heedless over their own affairs, but will at least think twice when it comes to others and that which they see with their own eyes today. Amongst the simple acts we can do, and should all do, for our sakes and for the betterment of the Ummah are: • Maintain the obligatory acts (prayer, fasting, zakāh). • Abstain from all sins - major or “minor”, nothing displeasing to Allāh should be overlooked. • Rectify intentions; perform acts to please Allāh alone. • Work together, overlooking differences and coming together for greater good. Progress will not occur whilst we spend our time arguing and refuting each other over the secondary matters, whilst genocide and occupation is on-going against the Ummah. • Increase in time with the Qur’ān, in its recitation and reflection. • Constant duʿā’ for the betterment of all of our brothers and sisters, in this life and the next. • Leave that which does not concern us; think of the reality of the Day of Judgement when we will only worry about own scale of deeds, and thus look introspectively instead of judging others. I ask Allāh to protect us all from oppression; from being subject to it or from contributing towards it by our own shortcomings. Amīn.

I don’t know about in all places but in the US many if not most houses have a front yard and back yard that are usually fenced in, especially the back yard. If you keep your guard dog in the back yard someone will just enter in the front of the house. If the guard dog is in the house it doesn’t matter which way they enter.

I have a situation, i own a Pet Husky dog who was given to me by someone i know and that person could not take care of it anymore. Knowing this person and the dog i agreed to take the dog in. I tought at the time it would be good since the dog can protect my house and i get to take care of the dog providing it a house and training. So i let the dog sleep outside as much as possible it has it own house in the yard BUT occasianlly comes in the house, this for when i have to take it outside or go for the park / training. Now im in a conversation with a girl who i would like to marry, she has no problems with the dog but keeps presisitng i dont need the dog. Knowing if i take it to the shelter they might put it down because Huskys are very stubborn and loyal to 1 person dogs. Im try to let them know the dog can sleep outside in its house, it will never come in the same room as where i pray. BUT on moments the dog does need to go trough the house because there is no alternative to take it out. What should i do, i feel like getting rid of the dog might be the end of the dogs life, there is no dog inside the property to stop potential thiefs. What options are there, because being good to a animal is also something valueable. I never in my life have i turned my back to a animal and this is not in my personality to do so. THe idea alone of taking it to the shelter while the dog is well fed, stable, happy and very protective over me because it likes me feels very wrong. That brings guilt feelings.

Some say it’s completely haram, others say it’s permissible as a guard dog, and some say it’s okay to have a dog as a pet. This issue is so complicated that I just won’t even risk it. I’m a cat person but it still sucks that this issue is so complicated that I can’t even consider having a dog. The worst part is my brother says that he’s gonna get a dog once he lives on his own but I don’t want him to risk being wrong, and he won’t change his mind. I just wish that someone would give us a clear answer and actually settle this. This is such a simple matter that for some reason involves huge conflicting statements.

Walaikum salam brother or sister, sad to hear you are thinking about this... I too have a dog but I do not believe in this hadith because it's not strong. However, unfortunately this sheikh does not mention what does the Quran say about dogs. From surah Al kahf (the cave) chapter 18, it is mentioned that a dog was with the youths in the cave and the youths were turned over to the right and left during their sleep. I believe angels were present to turn the kids while they are asleep even with the presence of a dog. Thus I do not believe angels dont enter your house because it does not match the quran. I do however believe the hadith regarding the dogs can make you fear water which is true as this is the cause of rabies, but once they are vacinated for rabies then it should be fine since we have prevention for that now. You can watch this video too about it kzbin.info/www/bejne/hH21naqpi96foqc.

To get technical, the main cause for concern is cleanliness. Some owners do not clean its paws when a dog comes into the house or when a dog walks over it’s own pee. Many owners also do not properly clean their dog after they do 1 or 2. The other thing is that a dog will lick anything and then lick its owner in the face. Some owners allow this and do not clean their face right away before kissing their loved one.

You know what.. In Hinduism, in our great text named Mahabharat, there was a guy named Yudhishthir who went to heaven.. He started his journey with his brothers and on the way a dog followed them.. All his brothers got tired and said we can't carry on... But Yudhishthir walked on and do you know when he reached the gates of Heaven, it was him and the dog... The dog is the one which follows you what you do. And do you know why Islam prohibits Dog, it is because Islam is one of the religion created by Sankaracharya.. And that's why Muslims gave more focus on Shukr ( Friday in Hindi) .. Sankaracharya was the God of demons.. So he hates what people do to satisfy gods... That's why such thing is written in Quran

Which means they are many ways it can be tampered based on one’s perception of something. human errors happen. Islam is all about showing love and care for all living beings. And dogs are significant in the prophet’s era. They were used to hunt and stuff. If their saliva are impure, how come people can eat the food they catch? And how come cats are ok when their characteristics are similar to dogs? I’ve never heard of anyone getting sick or died from dogs saliva. Unless it’s rabies. Which doesn’t originate from dogs but bats. So….

I don't own any myself because it's not allowed where I live but they're kinda similar to dogs: distinct personalities, intelligent, funny, remembers their owners, etc. Plus, they lay eggs ;) And yes, ducks are willing to let you pet them. It might depend on the breed, though. Muscovy ducks are silent ducks, in case you fear their nosiness. But remember that it's cruel to only keep one since they're flock animals.

@@eliasziad7864 i know i have looked up everything there is and nothing about dogs says they are haram or forbidden, nothing remotely close in the Quran. I even was discussing this with all my Muslim brothers in the mosque and one day we had a lecturer an ulejma from Mecca who had studied Islam for 60 years. And I handed him a note about “does my dog that lives with me in my house break my wudu or makes my prayer invalid”. And he answered there is no such claim in the Quran, nothing says they are haram… and I swear to you the whole mosque was looking in chock except me hahahaa we was dying laughing. Even the Ulejmas companion said when we spoke further that “why do you even keep the dog, just remove it” and I said but is it haram or gives me bad deeds and he still aaid No even though he didn’t like dogs himself. Just use logic, WHY would a dog be haram or a bad thing. They can hunt, protect family, create happiness and exercise for you to move and go out. They know nothing but love. But I swear Muslims live in a bubble cause in their countries they can’t take care of dogs and consider them dirty. Even though it is them who is kicking them to the streets. My dog was cleaner than 99 percent of people I know. This is just ridiculous at this point that Muslims can’t agree on such an easy topic.
