Awesome tones you got out of that little amp! Only thing I hate about having to use boost pedals live if you use 1 amp for clean and overdrive/distortion is you don't have a single switch for a clean tone any longer usually.
@clydebillingsworth85744 ай бұрын
This should be a series with lots of popular amps. I love the high gain amps but they just don't do it for the majority of situations that I find myself in but it would be awesome to get as close as possible with whatever amp is available.

I'd love to see this with lots of classically "low gain" or blues/jazz type amps. Here's my first majir challenge to you Kyle: try this with an AC30! I know that amp is *not* your thing, but that just adds to the fun! Hope to see more videos like this, excellent content!
@hoboroadie46234 ай бұрын
I was looking at a nice old British Korg one of those YESTERDAY at Guitar Center, but unfortunately I had a couple too many dollars with me and I ended up with a new Friedman Plex instead. Maybe next time. Kinda weird actually, I have more than two dozen Voxes but still not any ACs.
@flecht4 ай бұрын
AC30 FTW! Although it's on a vintage side, a treble boosted AC30 sounds great and works quite well paired with a modern sounding amp. Note for Kyle: if you really have to mic AC30 with an SM57, try it with one set at an angle. IIRC you can get quite a good results with an SM57 set at the edge of dust cap but facing center.

Nice!! I use that Soldano pedal into an HDRX 20 for more of an EVH sorta tone but it's truly an amazing combination. Super versatile and dynamic, and oozing with great tones for so many genres!

As a fan of doom and stoner, once you dialed in the EQ on that Walrus AGES I was tickled. I would absolutely use this amp as a high gain platform, throw a RAT in front or something of that ilk and I think that could be a VERY usable tone. Imagine that with P90's droooooooooooooool
@H3llb0y198764 ай бұрын
What I love about this is that it's a lot more versatile than your usual high gain amp would be. Here you get the cleans, the amazing low-gain stuff, and all sorts of colours to the high gain, since you'd have to construct that from scratch using pedals. I love my Mesas, but this is so cool, I'm considering getting one of these HDRX 20 now, haha.

A few pedals I love using I would like to try on that amp is my Ibanez pentatone, EVH5150 and Revv G3. Something like this amp is why I love gain stacking to really tweak the drive and help dial in that drive tone! Great video, Cheers!
@dannyllerenatv86354 ай бұрын
It can be done via gain stacking. You might even be able to get ungodly amounts of gain by using some of the ODs as a dirty boost rather than a clean boost. Transparency is rare; you would need a dedicated clean boost like an RC booster or Vertex boost, or an OD that is truly transparent, such as a Timmy or Lightspeed.

the guys in the 2000s metalcore/mathcore scene (like kurt ballou from converge) did this back in the day (and now). i think kurt used a metalzone with the gain all the way down, as a boost, into a jtm with the gain maxed

I recently got the matching cab of this in a trade and was curious to try one of these as a British-alternative to my Deluxe Reverb, but had just decided that I don't really need it. This is definitely not helping my GAS. I wasn't even planning to use it for high gain, but this sounds gnarly AF.
@EzyoMusic4 ай бұрын
Hey Kyle, a little bit in the same vein, I remember you talking about getting a tighter sound out of a Marshall 1960 cabinet by reinforcing it in some way. Would you still be up for doing a video about this?
@tonedowne4 ай бұрын
NO1 rule for getting hight gain out of vintage style amps is, roll the bass knob back as you increase the gain. The difference with something like a Soldano is that the eq section is not part of the preamp circuit, so it happens after the gain stage. Whereas the eq on a vintage style amp is more like the tone control on a distortion pedal.
@lowtonezf1044 ай бұрын
Love this video format. I loved it when you took the old school Marshall and did the same thing. This is also why the rectifier is my favorite high gain amp because it can be poked and prodded to make sounds that can fit on any type of album.

PRS used to make a amp (I believe) 🤔called the David Grissom Custom 50. I don't know, Mister Grissom always spoke of it like that brother who stays locked down in the basement, and it has been pretty much expunged from the PRS website. Anyway Righteous Guitars sent me one, and it looks to have all four of the EL-34s necessary for the job. I am wiring up a couple speakers in Styrofoam boxes so I can get in the room with just one quarter of the actual horsepower. It is a promising device that has apparently only been subjected to melodic plinkity-plinking stuff like what actual musicians would inflict on it. I would never be so cruel. My JC120 was done that way on the road by David Gates, and I swore to that poor machine that life would never be like that again. My other equipment likewise gets to stand tall and do what's right. If necessary I have some good pedals as well to achieve satisfactory outcomes. Tuesday when everyone has gone to work it is going to sound like Doolittle and a few dozen Mitchell Bombers are having a thirty-second traffic jam in the skies over my driveway. Gotta be careful, the Police Station is three blocks away. 👮♂

I don’t even use a conventional “amp” . No tubes, nothing expensive, and I can still get any tone under the sun.frfr powered speakers and properly stacking pedals. I couldn’t bring My triple rectifier everywhere and even The Laney IRT became to much. Sims and plug ins and cheap pedals these days smash and It’s a very original, personal, and unique signature of Yourself! You can make that amp sound like anything

The Epiphone being "darker" is a lie. Jumping back and forth with the PRS, they sound the same, but the Epiphone having higher output pickups makes the transients more squishy as it's pushing the amp harder. Even The Schecter sounds the same, but again, the level of output is just changing how saturated it is.
