Doesn’t sound like VH to my ears but I have two of these amps and I do believe they are one of the very best values out there. Stock, these sound like late 70’s rock machines and I’m still surprised they aren’t more popular. The HDRX 20 is essentially a Super Bass circuit and EVH used a Super Lead circuit in the Roth days. I’d say this amp has a sound without any pedals very similar to Alex Lifeson’s sound from What You’re Doing. It’s a great amp.

Hey dude, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the amp! You're totally right about the HDRX being a killer value - it's like finding a golden ticket in your Wonka bar! I hear you on the VH vibes - maybe my ears were picking up something different, or maybe I was just channeling my inner EVH that day! 😄 Your knowledge about the Super Bass vs. Super Lead circuits is spot on. I've built a few amps myself, so I really appreciate that technical insight. You nailed it with the Alex Lifeson comparison - that "What You're Doing" tone is pretty much spot-on. It's like the HDRX is a time machine that takes you straight back to those late 70s rock glory days. And hey, about it not being more popular? Well, maybe it's just too good and people can't handle the awesomeness. Thanks again for the awesome comment. Rock on and have an awesome day! 🤘

@@jayguitar It's nice and loud. With a pretty powerful drummer I don't need to mic it and I can get the master up a ways. A great plexi sound. I use it through a Mojotone British Lite 2x12 cab with two of their Greenback copies, which sound just like they're supposed to. My band mates love the sound.

I saw a video quite a while ago with Paul in the shop doing a demo with that amp. He cranked it up and walked into the next room and it sound incredible. Super good tune you've created Jay, the EVH influence shines through.

I have owned a '67 JTM Super Lead ever since late 1989. Best amp ever. I haven't had a try at the HDRX 20 yet, only the 100 Watt version and that sounded fantastic and very much like the earliest Super Leads like my own. Not the scratchy sounding later ones. This is probably the best plexi reissue out there and I'm really tempted to get one of these after hearing this demo.

Oh wow! I would LOVE to try the 100 - kinda scared to as well because I know how loud they get! Thats so cool that you have a 67! That is a very very special amp! I know in 68-early 70s the circuit changed ever so slightly and all changes have an effect on the tone. Its great to hear that this amp sounds like the early one, and you're right, the high end is very very smooth. Have an awesome day!

Jay, love the video, great as always. Im not too much a fan on the tone on this amp. I was wondering if you can do a topic of video strictly on the differences and tone with 6L6s tubes and EL 34s.. I know you’ve touched this on other videos but not set a whole segment on this topic. and running affects loops and the pros and cons of that. I have a PV 6505, w6L6s tubes in it and I don’t particularly care for them. I see what you mean, and I can get a slight difference out of the M with different tubes I live in an apartment and it’s the only amp that I could use it low volumes and still get that tone of hot tubes at low volume but it just doesn’t have that’s something that’s been there when I used to crank up Marshalls back in the day when I was able to. I just like the tone better. I was wondering if you could do a full video on this topic and the benefits of using affects loops, etc. I know this amp doesn’t have an effects loop and I’m wondering why. Thanks for your videos brother. PD
@jayguitar
@jayguitar 5 ай бұрын
Hey bro, that’s a great Q about the power tubes. Truth be told, power tubes make a small difference in the overall tone and that’s mainly down to how they are built, the plate length, etc. Main difference I find between the EL34 and 6L6 tubes is that the 6L6 sound a little tighter and has a different mid-range. I like the sound of both depending on the amp. And in a mix they make a bit of a difference but it’s. to night and day, more like different flavours. I don’t have an amp in which I can easily switch between the tubes but I would encourage you to check out the other videos on KZbin that have done the comparison as you may find them helpful Hope that helps a little. Have an awesome day!

Ed's sound was never just a plexi, components were changed, there were a combination of different types of speakers and the Variac which changed the voltage. Let's also remember that every Marshall especially back then sounded different because components would change based on what they had on hand which would change. PRS and EVH as well as Hendrix shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence.
@jayguitar
@jayguitar 2 ай бұрын
You're absolutely right about Ed's sound being more complex than just a Plexi! There were indeed many factors at play - modified components, speaker combinations, and the famous Variac setup. Not to mention the production and mixing process, and of course, Ed's incredible hands and technique. Good point about the Marshalls of that era, too. The variations in components definitely contributed to each amp having its own character. Ed even ran his power tubes over biased - running them hot and replacing them so frequently was part of his unique approach. It's these details that made his tone so special and hard to replicate. I appreciate your perspective on EVH, Hendrix, and PRS. While I respectfully disagree about not mentioning them together, I understand they each had very different impacts. In my view, they're all innovators who significantly influenced guitar music and technology in their own unique ways. EVH revolutionized playing technique and tone, Hendrix redefined what a guitar could do, and Paul Reed Smith innovated guitar design and manufacturing. Thanks for bringing up these points - it's great to dive into the details and have these discussions about guitar history and technology! Have an awesome day!

No one noticed because of the horrible one-dimensional marketing PRS did on this amp. Don’t know if it’s EVH necessarily, but the same circuits were used by virtually every one back in the 70’s, early 80’s in one form or another. I’d like to hear a really good in-depth demo of this amp now. I know initially I wasn’t interested simply because it was marketed (again by PRS themselves) as solely a Hendrix amp. But, that sounded killer to me. And, with something like a Hot Mod EVO, or Mr. Scary Mod who knows how good this could sound in that “Super-crunch” (which is what those 80’s tones are at this point) mode. Looking forward to getting one in front of my at this point. I have a Little Sister that does 99% of what I need it to do, but that 1%….that epic Soldano rhythm-playing, super-crunch (that virtually no one doing demo’s dials up anymore), is sorely missed. Great video, Jay…I had NO idea this amp could sound like that.

EVH makes some really nice VH worthy amps as well. Why not go directly to the source if that's the sounds you are looking for?
@jayguitar
@jayguitar 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for your great question! You raise a valid point about EVH amps. While the 5150 line certainly produces excellent tones, they're quite different from the vintage Marshall sounds heard on early Van Halen albums. Those classic tones are what many guitarists are chasing when they talk about the 'Van Halen sound'. The 5150s, though fantastic in their own right, don't quite capture that specific 'plexi' style tone as accurately as some other amps. For those seeking that early Van Halen sound, exploring Marshall-style amps might be a better route. That said, the EVH amps are definitely worth considering for modern high-gain tones! Have an awesome day!

The lack of the FX loop is the only reason I didn't buy this amp. I don't believe they change the tone at all, and I think it was a real missed opportunity for PRS to have a real winner here. They can say they wanted to stay true to the original amp, but they already added a master volume, bright switch, bright cap switch. There should be no amp without an fx loop
@crosswalklarry
@crosswalklarry 5 ай бұрын
I have an effects loop and use it on some pedals. Others sound better going through the front of the amp.
@jayguitar
@jayguitar 5 ай бұрын
I totally get your point about the FX loop. Having built several amps myself, and installed FX loops after the builds, even though they were supposed to be 'Zero Loss - Unaltered Tone' Loops, guess what?.... The tone actuallly did change a little bit 😊 🙏 Every component you add to a circuit, especially one as simple as a Plexi, has some effect on the overall tone. Anyways, I know this will be a deal breaker for some people and I totally understand and respect that. Have an awesome day!
@dscataglini
@dscataglini 5 ай бұрын
@@jayguitar Btw, how loud is the 20watts? Is the clean-ish loud enough to be used as a pedal platform? I think it should be possible to have an fx loop without affecting the tone when the fx loop is not in use. When you're using the fx loop a small change would be acceptable, since you'd be changing it anyway. I'm sure it's design dependent. Adding an fx loop to an amp that is not designed for it, it's definitely going to affect it. What I'm saying is if they were to design it from the get go to have an fx loop, it'd probably be ok. Now, I'd be curious to know how much of the distortion of this amp comes from the power amp section vs the preamp. There is definitely a threshold that past it, there'd be no point to have the fx loop in the first place, which might be the case for this one.

@@dscataglini it is still loud when it’s on the clean setting. You can always keep the treble and bass volume down but then dime the master. Is it loud enough for a pedal platform, that I don’t know because I haven’t used an amp that way for years, so it’s just my lack of firsthand experience in that area. It is really loud though, that I can tell you. I hear you about the fx loop. This isn’t a gigging amp for me - my MT15 would be my choice for live - so it isn’t an issue. But if I did gig it I would use it with my Boss Tube Amp Expander anyhow which has built in effects (which I do use live) and a loop so it would take care of that aspect of my sound.

I think it sounds great but I think you should have cut out a good 4 minutes of talk and replaced it with 4 minutes of isolated tones. After all the tones are what it’s all about 🎸
@jayguitar
@jayguitar 5 ай бұрын
Hey dude, thank you for your feedback. I appreciate your suggestion about including more isolated tones. While I understand the desire for more audio examples, I found there was actually more essential information to cover than I initially anticipated. Many viewers have found this background information helpful in understanding and applying the concepts. That said, I completely understand if you're more interested in the audio demonstrations. To make it easier for viewers like yourself, the video is time-coded. This allows you all to easily skip to the sections with tone examples or any other parts you find most relevant. Feel free to use these timestamps to customise your viewing experience and focus on the aspects that interest you most. On this particular video, I really only had four tones that I had dialled in hence the short iso tracks section. There are so so so many other videos showing the other tones which I would encourage everybody to check out for the variety of tones that this amp can do 😊 Have an awesome day!

Thanks so much for taking the time to check out the video man. I appreciate it. A friendly reminder that I timecode all of my videos so that folks can skip straight to the good stuff if that’s all they wish to see. I’m cool with that. With this amp, there was a lot more info that I first anticipated so it turned into a long one. But that info has helped a lot of folks out which is always a plus. Anyways, enjoy and have a great day.

PRS should stick to guitars. Nobody can deny they make great guitars. Their amps? not so great. PCB trash IMO. If you are okay with SS modelling... many choices today. If you really like tubes and all that, you need a real amp. That means hand-wired amps. This is garbage that will break down on you.
@jayguitar
@jayguitar 4 ай бұрын
Hey James, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. While I respect your opinion, I'd like to offer a different perspective based on my experience building and maintaining amps. The idea that all PCB-based amps are inferior isn't quite accurate. Many highly respected amp brands use PCBs, including Soldano (who've always used them), modern Friedmans, Diezel, and Bogner. These amps are known for their excellent sound and reliability. Hand-wired doesn't necessarily mean point-to-point wiring. Many hand-wired amps use PCBs, which are essential for more complex circuits with multiple switching options. From my experience building amps, a well-designed PCB can perform just as well as point-to-point wiring. You're right that some PCB amps have had issues, like certain modern Marshalls. However, this is more about the quality of components and PCB manufacturing rather than PCBs being inherently problematic. High-quality, double-sided, glass-mastered PCBs can be incredibly durable and reliable. While point-to-point wiring does have advantages for maintenance, a good quality PCB amp can be just as long-lasting. It really comes down to the overall design and component quality. As for the sound of PRS amps, that's subjective. Personally, I find they sound excellent, but I respect that everyone has their own preferences. At the end of the day, what matters most is that you enjoy the tone you're getting, regardless of the internal construction. There's room for all types of amps in the guitar world! Have an awesome day.

Hey man, Im just here to offer some friendly advise. Far far to much talking. Im not here to listen to you play a who song which has been produced, manipulated and run through a mastering process. I learnt nothing about the amp’s flexibility in tone and sounds. No one cares about in-depth description of your guitars and effects. Be more like Kyle Bull. Less like you.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts! I get that the video was more in-depth than you expected. My aim was to provide the kind of comprehensive info I would've wanted when researching this amp, especially details I couldn't find elsewhere. As a professional musician who does a lot of studio work, I wanted to showcase what the gear can really do when pushed in a recording context. It's about demonstrating its full potential, you know? I appreciate the feedback, but I'm comfortable with my approach. After 10 years on KZbin, I've developed a style that works for me and resonates with many viewers. While it might not be everyone's cup of tea, I believe in staying true to myself rather than trying to emulate or be others. I've seen Kyle's work - he's got his own talented approach to KZbin. For me, though, I aim to offer something different that I feel was missing from other reviews of this amp. And isn't that a wonderful thing? That we are all different? It creates variety rather then everybody taking the same approach. The raw isolated tracks are included at the end for those who prefer that. I'm glad so many folks have found the video helpful and enjoyed the playing. Thanks again for watching, and have a great day!

An amp is an amp. The tone is in your hands. When are people going to learn.🤦‍♂️ your just wasting your money and time.
@jayguitar
@jayguitar 4 ай бұрын
I appreciate your perspective Patrick, and you're right that a player's technique and touch are crucial to their sound. The old saying 'tone is in the hands' definitely has merit. However, I'd respectfully disagree that all amps are the same. While great players will sound like themselves through most gear, different amps and speakers do have distinct core tones and voicings. For instance, an EVH 5150III Stealth has a very different character from a vintage Marshall Plexi, even when played by the same person. These differences in equipment can inspire players in different ways, influence their playing style, and open up new sonic possibilities. For many of us, exploring these nuances isn't a waste of time or money - it's part of the joy of playing and creating music. That said, I agree that chasing gear shouldn't overshadow developing one's skills. It's all about finding the right balance that works for each individual player. Have an awesome day!
