Great Western Railway Pannier Tank. Hundreds of them were built - converted from older locos I believe - and served for decades on mostly passenger lines in the west of England. Many in push-pull services on branch lines. Lasted in service on British Rail until the 1960s. The London Underground system operated them too in a gorgeous red livery. Great video. I have the GWR version myself and I run it with a push-pull Autocoach trailer.

@@SMTMainline Yes. Many of them were used in tunnels. The 5700 class was sort of a maid-of-all-work for the GWR and later, the western division of BR. About the only place you wouldn't find them was on hotshot express passenger runs, and I'd be surprised if one didn't wind up on one of those at least once. A very versatile and useful engine.

You’re missing a brass bolt on the screw that runs through the magnet. X04 motors are pretty much bullet proof. It needs it to really secure the motor between the pole pieces. So yeah, someone really had messed around with this one. Replace that brass bolt and I reckon you’ll be good to go

@@SMTMainline if you’ve got the time just try putting the nut and bolt back in nice and tight (make sure there’s no air gap between the pole pieces and the magnet) and give the motor a 9v battery test . The coils look really clean to me so I’d be surprised if it was burnt out. The XO4 is a pretty rugged unit. When properly set up and serviced they are very reliable. The commutator slots can get gummed up with carbon deposits and need to be gently cleaned out with a wooden cocktail stick (don’t use anything metal). The commutator can be cleaned with meths, or the 00Bill T-cut on a cotton bud and a « scroosh » of aerosol contact cleaner method. It would be a shame to bin what is probably a perfectly good motor. I’ve saved nearly all of mine over the years just by treating them this way. If the coils are « bugg***d », you’ll find that out if you do a continuity test on each commutator segment with a multi-meter. Best of luck! I look forward to hearing how you get on. Triang Hornby put them in just about everything up until the late ´70’s. Yours looks like a later one with its gold coloured coils and just bare phosphor bronze bearings. The earlier ones had felt oil retaining pads on these bearings.

@@SMTMainline I know this is an older reply but I've found that you'd have to be really unlucky for the coils to go. Replace the magnet with a neodymium one, make sure that brass bolt is tightened and I think it'll be good. I've looked at load of these x04 motors and I've only had a couple with burned coils, it's usually the commutator, brushes and magnets Great videos, thanks for taking the time to share

I definitely think the problem with this engine was the Alnico field magnet had been removed, and it was no longer strong enough. A neodymium magnet or re-charging with a motor magnetizer would, in theory, bring it back to life. But that Mashima motor is so much quieter! It did look like the engine was having a hard time with slow speed running, I wonder why. Always fun to see you tackle another project locomotive. I totally discounted using hot glue to mount motors, but maybe I need to give it a try.

A good test of a motor magnet strength is to see how it attracts a small screwdriver. Comparison with your best open frame type motors will show what the strength should be. A weak magnet motor will always give sub optimal performance. Most of this era magnets will lose strength if taken out of the motor and thus be out of the magnetic circuit. Looks like this has happened in the past. Mashimas are a great motor, but I am amazed that you got the gear mesh even working with a hot glue method. If the gear mesh is not spot on , the motor will draw extra current and not perform as well as it should.

Excellent video! As per other comments here, I would never have thought of a hot glue gun and tape to mount the motor. Another technique in my tool box! Also as per other comments, I would have tried a neodymian magnet. Very cheap and powerful enough to have much smaller magnets and ignore any airgap if they don't quite fit. In fact you may actually want an airgap to reduce magnet power. Too much force as the armature rotates can apparently wear the armature axle bearing into an ovel shape so I am told. I have not experienced that problem myself however. Cheers!

I own quite a few Triang/Hornby models with that type of motor, specifically the X.04 motor, think of it as a downsized, 3 pole version of the DC71 motor, Triang created it and retrofitted almost all their models to use it, early diesels used a motor bogie with a motor frame cast into it, but all steam locos (barring the Caledonian and Dean singles) used the X.04, part of the reason why Triang did so well, the normalisation of components cheapened the models As for the creation of the X.04 itself, smaller motors were able to be used, as diecast bodies weren’t a thing Triang delved into, first using cellulose acetate bodies, before moving onto polystyrene in the mid 50s, lighter locomotives meant they didn’t need such beefy motors The X.04 continued production into the Hornby era, though a smaller motor was soon created, and tender engines/bogie diesels started to use their new Ringfield motors, starting with their 9F “Evening Star” loco, however tender engines with small tenders (namely the Ivatt 2MT and Holden B12) continued to use X.04s
@BR45723
@BR45723 Жыл бұрын
Also, I’d recommend being careful with these earlier Triang/Hornby models, their wheel profile was rather thick, and from my personal experience, they tend to catch on finer scale track switches because of the thick flanges, wheel replacements are easy to do though Thank you for listening to me ramble

Ah the 57xx’s( given away by the first 2 numbers on the road number) a fan favorite with both regular enthusiasts and with thomas fans due to a character of that class named duck (actual name being montague) after another 57xx model the the author, reverend wilbert awdry which had a bent wheel, making it waddle like a duck, nearly 20ish years before the book containing him was published in 1947 edit: a bit more backstory to the model, since he only probably had the mk1 models he made, he obviously qould need a spare engine incase something broke or blew out, which kinda correlates with the actual character, which was ment to replace percy(though not scrapped, just moved to thomas's branchline) at the tidmouth yard ,or knapford depending if your reading the books or watching the show, because the work load was to much for percy.

I remember HiQ made one for RC 380 size motors back in the 1990s which allow to restrenthern a motor than may have loss so,e during allot of hot races. Simple enough to build with wire and some scrap steel parts, big thing is to have a u-shape peice of metal to increase flux return around. Power off a spare 12 volt source. Something to think of

Nothing too fancy around here. I just hope the glue holds over time.

I would suggest the armature is fine. Check the resistance across each of the three windings via the commutator. They should be around 7 ohms. The magnet may well need a re-mag. By the way, the body is held in place by the small screw under the left side water tank (as you attempted first) but needs to be completely removed to clear the body. The upper part of the boiler/ tanks that came off should be glued to the main part of the body.

Judging by the burn marks on the windings I think they would all be shorted by now but I won't throw the motor out without doing your test on it.

normal it is accessed by the side screw so theirs a issue there, the screw poking up should of been screwed right down as it holds the magnet in place and helps hold the motor down, and a common issue with hornby locos of this age is the magnet you should re-charge any you get in the future as a maintenance regime, an the xo4 motor is fairly common to get if you need too replace any try ebay or peters spares

A few comments, your pannier tank is missing the top of the Funnel which is fairly common. I will admit that I'm not exactly impressed that after on track test you concluded the motor was junk and decided to replace it. part of the issue was probably as you say the magnet was at the end of it's life but the screw holding the rear end of the motor together was also missing a nut meaning that screw was an affect useless which didn't help. I also noticed you didn't clean out the spaced between the commutator plates which is crucial maintenance on all motors if you can. I'm also surprised how the chassis of the loco was barely touched with some oil and looks to me the pick ups needed a bit of adjusting. It looks to be in overall good shape bit a bit of cleaning and a drop of oil goes a long way as you should know.

Fun fact 00 gauge and HO gauge aren't the same gauge. Well they run on the same track, but 00 gauge is 1:76 scale on the body of the locomotive or car.
