Lol everyone says Maris shouldn't be in, but then no one says a thing about Reggie. Maris 2 MVPs Jackson 0, Maris 3 WS, Jackson 2. Maris played 7 years, Jackson played 5

Not sure if you’re aware of this, but these videos are awesome for new Yankees fans like me. I moved to the city a couple of years ago and fell in love with the Yankees, and these videos have helped so much in my Yankees knowledge. So thanks, keep it up!

Undeservedly so IMO, he got two MVPs, a major role in two titles (also five pennants in a row), and one of the all-time seasons in baseball history It's as though everyone forgot why Judge's 62 last year was so significant to begin with.

A few too many numbers retired but so do the Celtics (23), Canadiens (15 honoring 18 players) and Lakers (13)- dynastic teams tend to do this

Holy shit really showing strong bias against Maris. He has the same amount of world series as Nettles does on the Yankees, and one more without them. He also won MVP twice while playing for yankees and set the single season home run record as a Yankee, the record that didn't get broken until last year. Their careers aren't even close in retrospect. You don't get your number retired for being a good teammate, should we retire Gardner's number now too? Hard to watch that part
@MikeD_
@MikeD_ 11 ай бұрын
Retiring a number doesn't have to be just about the greatest Yankees over his career with the team. It can be about a player have an incredible special season or three. Maris was before my time, but I fully understand the incredibleness of 61 in 61. Back-to-back MVPs. Yes, Maris deserves his number retired and his place in Yankee history. Mattingly is not a HOFer and never made it to the World Series, but he also deserves to have his number retired for a different reason than Maris. Ditto of Jackson. All of them are part of Yankees history and of great significance. As I also noted above though, they should honor #9 again, but this time for Nettles.

The Yankees have done Nettles a disservice. He actually still ranks in the top 10 of all 3B'man in baseball history in rWAR once you remove the pretenders, such as Miguel Cabrera, who barely played at third. A-Rod too. He actually played more at SS, both in innings and games. Nettles still holds the AL record for HRs by a third baseman, and at his peak, he was the equal of Brooks at 3B. Should have won the Gold Glove a few times more during Brooks' reign. My guess is the Steinbrenner family still holds a grudge against him, and that's a shame. The fans don't. The Yankees haven't honored Nettles in any way in Monument Park. Not even a plaque. Crazy.

the Maris take is purposefully wrong and inflammatory, but otherwise, this was a pretty entertaining piece. I think the bit about excluding or separating managerial numbers was solid and a way more valid argument that i wish they’d spent an extra 45 seconds on rather than ragging on Roger..and..no one makes the point that we have double 8s, and could/should have double 9s?!

O'Neill, Posada, Torre, Mattingly, Bernie Williams should not be retired. Or at least 1 (Martin) and Torre's number should be retired but usable by players. Probably not 9 and 44 either as they were Yanks for short periods of time.

ARod also tried to sue the Yanks, the league and everyone else he could when he got popped. Pettite on the other hand used HGH when his shoulder was injured before it was illegal and continues to contribute to the organization to this day. Everyone can have their own views of course, but Pettite's relationships with the Yanks brass likely played a part in the decision.

@@wright1192 Some folks may feel that way, but I feel that cheating is comparable to commiting criminal offenses. Someone arrested for smoking weed in public where it's illegal still committed a crime, but it's not the same someone who committed a murder. Especially if the former is willing to perform community service and reform for example.
