This was good timing as I'm doing Warriors of Chaos for TOW and I'm using the AoS models because I really like the sculpts. I did (in the 90s) have a 5k chaos army (my parents gave away all my stuff) so doing a new army with AoS as opposed to the multipart kit of the late 90s was a must. I have actually brought a few of the old metal Chaos Warriors to mix in with the AoS ones just to add a little quirkiness and potentially give little extra wiggle room for the new plastic.

I literally just finished basing up some Chaos Warriors and am starting on Knights shortly, so this gave me a good idea on how to rank them up. One thing to note is that the rules state the command has to be as close to the center of the unit as possible (Big Blue Book 198) so I'll need to get the champion in a different spot than where you put him. Lovely work!

One of the things I like about rank and files vs skirmish style circular is how units look like small dioramas when ranked up. The Kroxigor look amazing ranked. The negative is setting up units with numbers on the bases. My Tomb Kings where made in shield walls and setting all of them up was a nightmare 😅

Moving away from having to number bases in order to get a unit to rank up was a big plus in terms of the base size increase, so I am glad that I have some old 6th edition Chaos Warriors to start with so that I don't have to engage in those sorts of shenanigans.

Great video! I am very happy about the outcome of the chaoswarriors. I have some plans in mind for some conversions of my chosens (Nurgle/Khorne) and they include Bloodwarriors and Putrid Blightkings. The last ones could be tough to fit on 30mm.

Brilliant video. I suspect the larger base size was partly to allow at least the option of using AoS minis in TOW. Take a look at the base size for Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount: the rules list two sizes, one which would work for the old mini and the other, bigger, suitable for the new one. They knew what they were doing.

Okay, I have a fresh AoS chaos army on the sprues: two of the older start collecting boxes and the army box with the chosen and Minotaurs. I want to do this exact thing but mount them to plastic sheet and magnetize the sheet to swap bases. Are we sure what’s in the Old World chaos army matches the AoS models? Knights, warriors, chosen, Minotaurs, a demon prince, etc will all be in the book? Were the units already spoiled somewhere?

Don’t forget, when ranking up, you can add some height to some bases. It really helps when ranking up cavalry. I use thin sheets of cork, the odd stone from the garden etc. Cheap and solves the problem in most cases.

I’m struggling with this right now. I have a whole bunch of Lumineth that I just haven’t touched for Sigmar (not sure I will ever play it), but thinking how do I make spearmen work (archers, sword masters and cavalry are fine). Also wondering how the scale will work with some of the other units they will release (dragon princes, phoenix guard, etc). I may have to wait, but sitting on 20 spearmen, 30 archers, 15 cav, 10 sword masters etc is making me want to have a crack

I spent two days getting AoS Warriors built and tacked to square bases. The Minotaurs aka Ogres rank okay and look cool, and the new Chosen are fantastic looking. I got my demon prince built but I’m figuring out his base, I’m elevating him on terrain because he sticks out from his 50mm base. The awful push fit knights from the old Start Collecting box are truly the worst GW minis I’ve built in a long time. They’re broken down on the sprue in such a silly way, painting them will be awful given how they can’t be broken down in sub assemblies. Still this is a really awesome project and I can’t wait to get back to square based battles!

I’ve got a set of the new WoC and Chaos Knights to use as Chosen. I’ll use the older units as standard WoC. And in regards to the lore, this setting will capstone with the Great War Against Chaos, as a Siege of Terra style event (some time down the road). It’s the invasion where the 12th Everchosen of Chaos destroyed the city of Prague, and in the view of the developers, doomed the world. It just took another 250 years and Archeon to finish it off.

I don’t think you would want that. Two units of 5 I feel is much more useful then 1 unit of 10. But to answer you question I don’t think another rank will fit easy at all.

I'm planning on High Elves and Night Goblins for my starter armies. The Gitz stabbas and shootas should rank up fine (they might actually be WHFB minis still, I'm not sure). As for Elves, there's not many Lumineth minis that I'd really use, maybe Dawnriders for Silverhelms and possibly Bladelords without their banners as Sword Masters so I guess I'll need to wait and see what GW bring back for them. Love the concept for this video, there's gonna be a lot of rebasing going on.

I have been basing several not-shit AoS miniatures on 25MM square bases -- few as there are, but nevertheless, I've found that even the Warcry miniatures can work (excepting the ones with really exaggerated poses). I had to cut the arms off that one marauder warband that uses bone weapons and re-pose them, for example. Good thing the absolute heights of the new CWs are actually about the same as the old ones, can't say the same with the CKs, however. Shame about those wolf riders tho -- they had the same problem I had with new Chaos Knights on 25x50 MM bases -- their tails are too long. Problem is, the CKs seems to fit on the bigger base, but the wolf riders don't look like it. Why anyone would need more than 5 of them is anyone's guess...

The idea of individual bases is a design choice I wish had been left in the past. I play DBA and Le d'Art de Guerre and while figures per base is encouraged to telling what a unit is, there is nothing to stop and use the KOW scenic based (also used in Impetus for Ancients). Also easier to transport!

The blood knights worked for me on 50x25 so they should easily fit on the bigger cavalry bases.

Curious about morbheg knights - they would make a beautiful proxy for vargheists but their current bases are massive! Spirit hosts as well seem troublesome on 40mm. And if you do monsters etc black coach and vargulf would be really interesting to see.

Well spirit hosts were originally on 40mm so shouldn’t have a problem there. As for the Morbheg I have no idea.

Love it. Honestly dude, Commendable what you did. I just said screw it and will get trays that fit the unit, and play on the circle bases. NO one got time for that crap. GW didn't realize how popular this game was gonna be and dropped the ball for supply and demand. The thing that I love about this new game already is how creative some people are getting with their minis / models. It's retro.

Yes I made these myself! You should be able to pick up something similar for fairly cheap online though-look for laser cut mdf movement trays!

You can try using 60x30, 60x60 bases (or gluing several 30x30 bases together) as unit fillers and putting several warriors closer to the centers of these bases so they don't stick out too much

I think Saurus Warriors are going to be a challenge to rank up. I tried it already and even if you use the ones thrusting their spears foreward in the second rank, the ones in the first rank, despite holding them low on their dise overlap the bases and the movement tray in the front quite a bit, which makes getting into contact with an enemy unit a bit of a problem. In the best case, you stand a coumpe of inches appart, in the worst case you break some of the spears. Ranking those Saurus Worriors up is also harder than one might think because their tails are long and all over the place. I managed to rank some of them up, until I realized that I had not tested it with the shields mounted, which also makes quite a difference. I love the models but I think they are just not made for the Old World.

I honestly didn't have a whole lot of trouble with getting the knights to rank up. I haven't attempted the chaos warriors yet though. I really don't need to because I have enough of the old ones anyway. I reserved the new ones for my AoS army.

Funnily enough, I have a huge ol' pile of High Elves to do... a few Wood Elves and I picked up an old (and slightly wonky) set of Tomb Kings Chariots the other day. These old mini's are such a joy to tinker with, I much prefer them over the overdesigned AoS stuff.
