Today we challenge ourselves to repair a regulator hose that has been severely damaged with a bolt cutter.
Can it be done before completely running out of air?
Time to find out.

I’ve already mentioned you guys have inspired me to cave dive. Yesterday I was making my first two dives toward wreck. Before the start of the class the instructor was talking to an open water guy who was on his first dive. He made a comment about dead space and how he watched a lot of KZbin videos about diving. I recommended your channel. What he said in response was awesome. He said he was already watching your channel and had been for months. Your channel is what inspired him to take his open water. Dude’s first open water dive and he was completely relaxed rarely used his hands. I’m sure he’s gotten tips from you. Thank you for the positive impact you’re having on the dive community. One thing i noticed is you guys started straight on the leak with the tape. What ive been taught with water leaks is you start on one side, get a tight wrap, and just slowly work your way across where the leak is. You dont start right on the leak which I think you guys did but it wasnt super clear. Anyways great vid guys. Always love your content. Would be a member if i wasnt broke lol. 50k subs right around the corner.

I don't think it would've mattered here either way. A water leak is usually around 40-60psi, LP hose is under at least 150psi, so regular approaches are less effective.
@abollao85
@abollao85 2 жыл бұрын
I understand that the idea was to stop the air flow, not to continue using the regulator that had the broken hose, if thats the case, i think i would have just folded in half the hose and clamped it tight, it works with a garden hose, im sure it would have worked in this case too. Great videos guys!
@ABCDiver
@ABCDiver 2 ай бұрын
that would have been a great approach! fold the hose in half, (attempt to) repair it, then let go to see if it worked, if not, keep holding the folded hose and breathe from the backup.

@@abollao85 doesn't work. Even with mole grips. Watch Alec Pierce scuba 2000s video on it. Only way is to cut the hose off completely and then spike it with very tapered plug. That will hold 10 bar easily

The trick is the tightness of the initial wrap, consequent wraps only reinforce it. Woody good job. Gus's tape was all over the place during first wrap XD. Wondering why neither of you tried to do the first wrap with the tank closed holding breath. @@DIVETALK Here's where the details of the rules matter and "slyness" can be used. If you were to turn the valve just before the point where the regulation no longer works, you would have less pressure in the line and it will be easier to tape the leak. Cherry Tape. It’s a stretchy, rubbery type of tape, used commonly for electrical wiring harnesses, that sticks to itself and other rubber surfaces, is water tight, highly durable, and can be used to wrap around two pieces of hose tight enough, several times over, to make a temporary repair. It is honestly the best option I can thing of, and even then, probably won’t work in time before all the air is gone.

My idea: Cut a slit in a 2" piece of flexible hose and slip it over the leak area. Then do the same with yet another 2" piece of larger hose, slit open, slipping it over the first one (with the slit on the opposite side this time). Then tighten them down on both ends with a round metal plumber's clamp. Bet that works.

My dream dive location is Maug Island in the northern Marianas. It's a shallow sunken caldera of an old collapsed volcano but there is still some geothermal activity underwater so people say it's like diving through warm champagne because of all the volcanic gasses and bubbles seeping up through the ground. I'm not a diver. Wish I was! But the answer was easy. From hardware store all you need to know is what the inside diameter of your hose is which you should know and get a double barb brass or plastic hose coupling and cut hose completely into and insert hose coupling and push both ends together. For a more secure connection add two zip ties . Cost maybe but under $5

great video and fun experiment! It would have been interesting to see the results if this was done again but instead: - They temporarily shared air of the other diver/used backup tank. and closed the valve on the main (one that's leaking) to remove outward pressure. - Both wrapping the tape Really tightly and slowly as they wouldn't be rushing due to rapid air loss. and pressing out any air pockets as they go. (The tape was so loose for both Gus and Woody.) - slowly turning the valve back on to gradually build the pressure allowing the layers in the tape to close.

A way to not make it leak?! Challenge accepted. Ok, here are the options, you guy pick: Hand driven self tapping screw with self fusing tape. Steel tube sleeve crimped with hydraulic crimper. Modified pressure pliers to work in similar fashion to a hemostats. Bend the tube and secure it with cable ties. Something, something bubble gum. Installing a dedicated needle valve to each output. Now, take some time to practice. I am sure one of those will work.

I would've brought a pair of snips and a Sharkbite fitting. Just the cut out the damaged section of the hose and then make sure the ends of the hose are nice and straight and square. You press the hose right into the coupling and it locks right in. We use them in plumbing all the time and they are water tight. I bet that would work awesome and you could probably fix it completely, without any leaks, in under a minute. You guys should try that next time. What is the diameter of the hose?

It seems like there is a lot more air escaping from the cut in Gus' hose than from the cut in Woody's hose... i would assume the cut in Gus' hose was larger and therefore the air escaped faster, thus making Gus lose. I don't think either "repair method" had anything to do with the results :D Both proposed sealing methods seemed equally useless :D Though it was entertaining to watch :)

Flex tape is no joke. I've used it alongside aluminum flashing to repair rubber roofs before and it's held up through rain and snowstorms for months until I could get up there with the propane tank and big ass blowtorch thing to lay down more actual roofing rubber. That's one as seen on TV product that's the real deal. The best "duct tape" you can get in most stores is that super strong gorilla tape, and while gorilla tape is very good... Flex tape is exponentially better. It's in a whole different ballpark. It makes even the gorilla tape look like scotch tape trying to stick to Vaseline.

I have two friends working as saturation divers in the North Sea and it isn't that nice. One of them is about to quit because he feels like it's not worth it anymore and the salery is still good, but not as it used to be. Too much side-effects from it and it really tears you body down. If you ever go to Aberdeen and see 40 year old guys with missing teeth, walking with a stick and and alcoholic problems 99% of them are former saturation divers. It comes with a pretty damn high price. First you need to get all the certificates required and that takes time and is really expensive. Then you need to get the experience somehow which is almost impossible because no one wants "baby divers" so you get to do 10 years of shit jobs and might get tending jobs or surface supplier/diver. Then you need the contacts to get the chance to do the saturation dive and most don't have them. 90-95% of all of them that goes through the different education and certifications needed quits because they simply will never get the chance of a job. It's a really though industry and due to new technology and developments they are not needed anymore and many dive schools has closed. The future is to become a ROV-pilot and there's where the big bucks are today and they will get a job because 95% of the ocean is unexplored. So some dove schools has change their direction and educates ROV-pilots nowdays.

I was thinking, if you could find some plastic hose that would fit the inside diameter of the cut hose, somehow cram it in there and both together under free flow and THEN tape the whole mess up ... that might have worked. Also, if you'd have squeezed the duct tape down tight every now and then before continuing to wrap, that might have improved the repair a bit more. You're welcome, lol. And Woody, the Dollar Store? Really?

"Don't try this at home" WTF??? It's not as if we've all got an ocean in our backyards😆 Everytime someone says don't try this at home, it is exactly what i'm gonna try and probably at home.

Even if Woody was unable to fully plug the hole, he would have been the winner regardless, simply because he was running out of air at a much slower pace. Just look at the air meters at 8:47 and 14:07, respectively. Gus was already in the red, while Woody still had a decent amount of air left. Either the holes were of different sizes, or that glue was highly effective. Perhaps a rematch is in order to rule out any other variables and to see if Woody wasn't just lucky.

Man flex seal or some really tight and precise wraps with the duck tape might have worked lol! Bet it was incredibly hard no matter what. Thanks for the incredible content. You guys rock!

Cool video. Maybe if you revisit this you do it as a team, brain storm a couple of fixes or take some from the comments, rehearse out of the water on a busted line, and execute in the water helping each other along the way? I suspect if there is a fix its a two person job underwater to make a feasible initially. My two cents for a fix is something like this is limited, but I would like to see something semi-rigid to span and close the break then something like a hose clamp used to apply external pressure. I'm not sure what the semi-rigid product should be. Another thought: using Gus's tape over the break, wrapping that with a wrap or two of duct tape to secure it, and finally putting a hose clamp over the break to apply pressure would work?

My thought immediately went to using one PEX plumbing coupling (barbed) $4.57 with either 2 zip ties $3.94 (for white 20-pack) or 2 metal hose clamps $1.88 each. Connect barb to "air" end with zip tie or clamp and tighten (air will flow throw fitting). Then put clamp or zip tie snug on other end of hose. Push regulator purge button or hold mouth piece up to get it to free flow while pushing fitting into regulator side of hose. With purge pushed the air will travel through the hose and out the regulator relieving the pressure at the connection point. Maybe you can try an experiment with that idea.

you probably need a short section of repair hose and 2 hose clamps (the ones you screw on), then you have to completely cut the hose where it's leaking and clamp the short repair hose to each cut end. If you have the dexterity and nerve to use a screw driver in this situation, there might be hope.
