in terms of hair, typically a "3" trims down to 3/8" hair length while a 1.5 would be 1.5/8" hair length. so its x/8" where x is whatever number guard you have. so the smaller the number the shorter hair length. my beard trimmer specifies that it is in millimeters. if you normally go to a 1.5/8" that would be 4.76mm, so if you switched to a trimmer in mm you may have found your beard to be about a third the length as you anticipated
