Amidst the rise of authoritarian populism and shifting trends towards right-wing extremism, Crystal Cordell questions the power of demagogues in the political landscape. A powerful and insightful look into the complex political climate that frames our world today, Cordell seeks to debunk narratives of populism.
Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Crystal’s academic career took her first to Canada and then to France, where she is currently pursuing research in the fields of political science and philosophy.

A professor at the Middle East-Mediterranean campus of Sciences Po Paris as well as at the University of Nice - Sophia Antipolis and the Skema Business School, she draws great inspiration from her students, who enrich classroom discussions with their diverse origins, interests, and perspectives. It is not uncommon for Crystal to bridge the gap between contemporary ethics and politics and ancient philosophy in her publications and course lectures.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Whoever handled the audio for this screwed up big time. Someone should have fixed the dramatic changes in volume in post production. It is hard to pay attention to a video with huge changes in speaker volume.

Whatever one thinks of populism the argument presented here is merely a lame defense of the establishment status quo. The failure of the establishment to solve issues leads directly to populist success. Simplicity or complexity is irrelevant. Only results matter. No results over time leads to increasingly radical political outcomes. Moaning about the complexity of things simply will not hunt. Reasonable rhetoric is drowned by the evident failure of the political class in power. Dangerous or not populism is inevitable.

Do you mean authoritarian populism is inevitable? I agree with you about the fact that she is defending neoliberalism, and neoliberalism is a disaster. A truly democratic populism is good- I refuse to believe that the Putins and Orbans and Bolsonaros and Trumps are just simply inevitable.

So said the authoritarian. So if Major Corporations and politicians don't agree with there authoritarian rules. If a corporation can relocate to a country with no labor laws. The Constitution is for America and the most important part is to protect American Citizens. For decades we witnessed the Authoritarians in D.C. worry about the Global economy now we vote in our own self interest is athurtaren. Not wanting to force democracy on other nations is athurtaren. In 2019 if Major Corporations where not allowed to use other countries for national resources and cheap labor not having to go by EPA standards. Today the Major Corporations that includes Journalist are siliencing and banning anyone that disagree with there globalist plans. Wake up you are protecting the Authoritarians. Force and censorship should never be used to force your ideology on anyone.

People need to be self-reliant and conduct themselves with individual and community benefit, without trespassing on others. A weak populace gives rise to authoritarianism.

I can't imagine how empty you have to be inside to look at and listen to Trump and think, "Yeah, this is a great man to follow."

It fits into the psychology of right wing authoritarians. They want a strong man leader. Which is why high social dominance orientation leaders get up and say anything they need to to stay in power and these two groups roughly go together.

We need a whole new way of governing, ideally, however, coming up with a whole new monetary system that can prevent greed from taking hold would be a great start, I know what I'm about to say may seem like a joke to some people, but, whatever system they use within the Star Trek films (Fictional), that's what we need as well as a whole new way of thinking.

This woman's thinking is convoluted. What utter bull - this talk should be taken down because it has zero value. Let her live and study some more - maybe 10 to 15 years more,, and grow in true knowledge and wisdom, and then return to give a talk!
