I made my way through many parts of Europe over the last few years, always on a strict budget. My own budget was a little higher than yours, but I included things like local transport in that. I ate foods from the supermarkets and bakeries and treated myself to a nice meal from time to time. Lots of planning involved, but I loved every minute of it.

Loved this video! I had a trip to Switzerland/Germany/Italy back in 1972 when I was 15. A group trip offered by 2 teachers from my school. My sister and I went. So to see those 3 countries in 7 days was a whirlwind. Our base was in Lucerne. Loved that bridge! Never seen anything that old before. We didn't see much more of Switzerland, just going through it to Germany and the train to Italy, but I would love to see Switzerland again. The scenery is just spectacular! I understand it has really gotten more expensive through the years. One other thing we did in Lucern, was go to a bar/nightclub called the Rathskeller near the bridge, where we saw men blow the alphorn. Those horns are taller than most men. Interesting! Anyway, you saw more than I did. The castle was beautiful! This trip is one that you and Tom will remember for a lifetime. Thank you for sharing!

I am blessed as i have spent 35 years visiting Switzerland, sometimes even 3 months at a time, and you simply cannot visit for only 50 Swiss francs or Euros a day, unless you don’t eat! Great adventure Sean! Great to have your son along. The views everywhere are incredible, too much for the eyes to believe!

I watched your video to the end. The sights were terrific! The Vietnamese food looked good. I would have stocked in the camp lots of bottled water, beer and wine. That way you could have had a glass of wine with your lunch of bread, cheese, and sausage. The castle had so many old treasures that were very interesting. Your video was informative, interesting and very pleasant to watch. I will never be able to travel for health reasons so I really enjoyed your journey. Rest up and relax. Looking forward to your next video . God bless. Hello from Yakima,Washington USA

I travelled with my dad and mum with myself younger Bro and sister in 1989. Drove it all and stayed in wildersville and Interlaken. And travelled from there up to Wengen, Piz buin. Used the train into gundeswald etc. Very expensive. But once there you find ways to do things cheaper. Cheap train rides. Even upto the Klein a Schidigg train passes. Back towards Muran. Some of the most beautiful journeys I’ve ever experienced. Found shopping for food at the local supermarket could be just as expensive as going to your local bar with entertainment, but awesome food.

Greetings from Switzerland, been watching the videos for a long time now but this title had me laughing as I know how hard it can be as a foreigner in this expensive country, as I am one myself. "You didn't tell me it was on top of a mountain" it's what they all say when coming to visit me, hahaha. The wooden bridge in Luzern translates to chapelbridge, a large part of it was destroyed in a fire in 1993 but they restored it. You might have seen some still blackened parts on the wood here and there. It's original function was also to make sure ships could not cross there and thus not attack the town.

Just a note about the Lucerne bridge (5:15): It was built originally in 1360; but in 1993, a boat moored beneath it caught fire one night, setting several more ablaze, and it destroyed 2/3 of the bridge; as the most photographed bridge in the world, they were able to meticulously reconstruct it using photographs donated (as well as historical documents). The paintings damaged in the fire were all restored. I find the idea of limiting your day's budget a great exercise - it forces you out of a normal "restaurant" routine, letting you discover how easy it is to put together a delicious picknick! You were fortunate to catch the Chateaux de Gruyére's festival! 24:43 - the higher you go in the Alps, the thinner the air - so it's no wonder you were out of breath, especially if you're not used to the altitude! But you made it up to the castle! I hope you enjoyed your time in this beautiful country!

What a wonderful vlog, Sean & Tom!! Thank you for bringing me along!! I agree, the Swiss are definitely reserved, much more so than the Germans. But I managed with my halting French, my nearly nonexistent German and my somewhat fluent Italian. However, moneywise, Switzerland is difficult to navigate. But the scenery and views are unparalleled!! I visited Zürich four times, twice in the 70s, and once each in the 80s and 90s. The last visit was the toughest on the pocketbook!! In desperation, I foolishly considered a single Big Mac without fries or a drink until I saw the price was more than $10, in equivalent 1995 CHF Fr. At the time, it cost well under $3 in the US!! That put me off quick. But I managed with the same strategy you used, mainly going to supermarkets and shops for food, rather than restaurants. The 70s definitely had more options: all you can eat salad bars at Jelmoli and Globus department stores, the church-run alcohol free soup kitchen (nominal fee), Coop Supermarket near the Central Station, the ShopVille coin-operated food dispensing machine under the train station (delicious Swiss yogurt) and the odd brat on the street. And yes, the medieval bridge in Lucerne is amazing, saw it twice in the 70s on day trips from Zürich. So, I agree Switzerland takes a bit of work to save money, but it is possible. Chuck in Northern New England

Years ago, in the 70s, I went to Montreux and Gruyere with my entire family, 3 of whom are now deceased, so the video reminded me of all the activities and fun times we experienced, including picnicking in an Alpine meadow, eating local cheeses and deli meats while listening to the cow bells.

Oh, what a lovely video, Sean and Tom. The medieval festival was fun to see. I have been to a renaissance fair or medieval event in ages. I would have blown my budget on the fair for sure! My husband and I rented an RV about 5 years ago. We decided to see the Grand Canyon since he'd never been. LOL What an adventure *that* was! We were both in our 60s and not in the best shape. Our Beagle was not happy about the change of living conditions until we made it to the Canyon. We learned our lesson and will not be traveling by RV ever again. It will be hotels or nice motels from here on out! 🤣💚
