yeah, there are different cultural manifestations of poverty. this example of these romani people rather shows how superficial interactions can lead to superficial content. perhaps they'd prefer the "quiet poor" as you find (very widespread) among the elderly in estonia? maybe some of this is playing up the drama for yt?

I lived and worked in Prague for over 10 years, and now I've been living and working in Krakow, Poland for more than 5 years. Based on my experience, I kindly suggest Wild Viking Travels to avoid referring to these countries as part of Eastern Europe and refer to them as Central Europe. Using that term creates a division. The expressions "Cold War," "Iron Curtain," "East," and "West Europe" are a thing of the past. To me, Krakow and Prague are two examples of beautiful European cities.

In cities having a garden is an exeption. Even in most suburbs people dont have their own veggies in gardens. Also, going to church is not a thing for everyone. Here in Czechia, these gypsy people got new apartments in 90s and this is how it looks like after 30 years, they steal even their own things like metal rails in those buildings and water pipes, what is the solution of this problem? Nobody knows. But the main fault was that they put them into one place, when you have some gypsy family around between other people, there is mostly no problem.

"I don't wanna be racist" dude no worries. I know some some decent Gypsies and they are also well aware about the negative stereotypes. In fact they are more then happy to warn people about them. For all the Americans and sheltered westerners: yes there is an ingrained culture of stealing and scamming people within the Gypsy community which is mostly kept alive by the elders who make a good living off of it. There are some places where it is better and these tend to be interestingly enough areas where people and noteworthy Gypsies themselves "demand" that the communities integrate into society, but there are also more "wild" areas where they just live out their worst stereotypes and alienate anyone of their community who doesn't want to be part of it.

I’m sure you guys are very nice people but the decision to make this video is rather disappointing. You obviously knew what you would encounter there and to make poverty and lack of education a tourist point is demeaning. You have also unconsciously reinforced the stereotype in many westerners heads that all of Eastern Europe looks like this and all the people from there behave like that. As a university educated Eastern European myself with a job in Finance I still get remarks and treated differently by people in the UK due to the perception of Eastern Europeans. If you want to find poverty like this, most countries have it, they just don’t advertise it so you are not aware until you visit. You can try visiting Croydon at 3 am in London and make it a survival video. Next time please keep in mind how this will affect people and the trickling down effect. If you want to show poverty how about also showing the generosity, culture, landscapes, amazing food Eastern Europe also has.
@WildVikingTravels
@WildVikingTravels Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your opinion. As Eastern Europeans, it is a bit harsh saying that people have a fully negative stereotype of us from the Eastern Block and that showing a ghetto in Eastern (or Western) Europe will have everlasting effect on the country. This is the reality in this place and hiding it and making it seem like everything is London and Paris is not realistic, moreover especially as social media depicts only positive experiences. Sorry this all upset you but we really did not know where we drove into. Otherwise we truly would not have :). As always, we show the negative and positive sides of travel (and Eastern Europe). Check out the other videos of places we visited if requesting some nature shots of this part of the world.

Lunik 9 used to be a "premium" settlement designed for police and army officers and their families in Socialist Czechoslovakia. Highly desirable address when it was newly built. Then some communist brain got a brilliant idea to also move in gypsy families. The theory was that example of the creme de la crop of socialist society living there would have positive impact on them and they will change their ways.... and also with so many policemen living there, they thought they will not be a problem. Communist megaminds forgot about one natural law though.... if you reach a critical mass of gypsies in one place, nothing can influence them. Lunik 9 became unlivable for young families very quickly and white flight started. Fast forward couple years and this is what is left. A monument to 700 years of failing to integrate them into European society.

Lunik 9 is the perfect example of people from India (gypsies from Indian state of Punjab) bringing their way of life to Europe. They are not a representation of Eastern Europe. We were stupid to let them destroy these areas. People in Eastern Europe welcomed them and this is what they do pretty much the same is happing in Western countries such as France where they have people destroying their cities and towns. Interesting fact, recent census (2021) shows that the number of Gypsies in Slovakia is down a lot but not because they left, it is because thousands of Gypsies don't consider themself Gypsies anymore, they don't want to be part of what you've seen in places such as Lunik 9 and that's a good thing. It looks like they are finally waking up and actually trying to become part of our society. Their culture and language is protected in Slovakia under the law for minority groups which gives them freedom to celebrate their culture, music and language but at the same time, they are choosing to live a European way of life. Many Gypsies in Slovakia actually live in regular houses and flats, work regular jobs just like other Slovaks and these ''slums'' are more and more rare which is great. Slovaks are very supportive of those who try to integrate into our society but you can't help those who aren't willing to do so and prefer to stay in these isolated areas where laws don't apply. Slovakia and Czechia are safer than the UK, France, Italy and so on but people will always look down on us because we are ''Eastern Europe''

The difference between the east part of Europe and the western part of Europe has always been huge. And what we´re seeing now with more eastern countries joining the EU that their economic prospects can finally takeoff for the better. And Poland will probably reap the benefits of the bigger developed country of Eastern Europe.

I’m glad you two have each other to watch your back. And I hope you have some bear spray or some type of non lethal protection in case you have anything scary situation happen again. It’s better to have something and never need to use it then to have something happen and not have something to protect yourself. Sorry about your phone too. Well.. many consider East bloc countries as Eastern Europe and it may sound harsh but your country belongs to that as well. I think, and I'm happy about it, that this has changed and your country is now one of the Baltic States, much different, I would say. But there are still many people who think that old fashioned way.... Still every country has it's good things and not so good things. And some countries require more investigation of places to go and places rather not going to, than others. I myself feel, and probably agree with you, that Eastern Europe is still more corrupt but I might be wrong. Let's hope so! 😃 Keep up the good work, I enjoy your channel a lot!! And I am currently planning my own van road trip through Europe, Morocco and Turkey. Since I'm travelling as a woman alone I have to take some extra precautions, but I already have been to Morocco a couple of times (fly there and rented a car), and that went really well. So you would say Turkey is a better place than some of the countries in Eastern Europe. Also for a woman travelling alone?
@WildVikingTravels
@WildVikingTravels 11 ай бұрын
Heyhey. In my opinion turkey is the best place in the world for van life. And in my opinion it is safe. But I cannot but myself into the shoes of a single woman traveler, so I am probably not the best person to ask advice about that.
