Can We Survive The Toughest Grand Tour Stage?

Not all grand tour stages are created equal! At 226km, with 5941m of elevation, Stage 16 of the 2019 Giro d'Italia was designed to be truly epic! Ollie and Hank took on this incredible ride that includes the brutal Passo Gavia and the Passo del Mortirolo!

Setting aside for the moment the monumental ride of Ollie and Hank in difficult conditions, what struck me most about this video was the astounding, absolutely top-level cinematography. The framing, pans, transitions, everything about this video, separates it from being 'just' a KZbin video and puts it solely into the realm of pro-level documentary film making. The GCN videographers definitely need more recognition!

I guess it was bunny hop or risk a slip on the overbanding (slick tarmac repair strips, with absolutely no grip). Wish I could do it. I'm a bit jealous of the fitness levels, but seriously jealous of the bike handling.

That brought back good memories of the Gavia, which I rode in late June 2017 :) Well, most of it was good: that unlit tunnel wasn't: even with a front light, the tunnel was so dark it was disorienting to ride through. The last few kms are spectacular, but the gusty winds through the hairpins/tornante near the pass made it tough going. An amazing climb, that one.

That is the best production that I have seen from GCN. It’s amazing that Hank and Ollie can have a conversation while climbing the steep ascents. Beautiful scenery and nice background music. I just watched it on my 65 inch tv in my surround sound home theater. Very entertaining!

Guys, yet again another great adventure - Chapeau!! After the epic Gavia, you would have enjoyed the descent into Bormio - superb hairpins followed by serious speed!! Did the Gavia and Mortirolo as a warm-up to the Stelvio Santini in 2014. We were told to carry leg/arm warmers, jacket, thermal gloves, overshoes - the lot, despite the temp in the Valleys being 22°C!! Boy, did we need them, -8°C near the top, especially in the tunnels (note: take some lights as well). Also remember the Gavia and Stelvio affecting my power - thin air did indeed sap near the top! As for the Mortirolo, if you don't like standing, get the biggest granny gear money can buy - it takes no prisoners! Btw, superb music and scenery - enhanced by the suffering. More of this please.;-)

Such a shame it was closed and won’t be in the race. Great film. Gavia - Mortirolo loop is something anyone who loves climbing should do once. Go to Bormio and have a crack at the Stelvio from both sides too! Fingers crossed that the Cima Campo - Manghen - Rolle - Croce d’Aune ( the campagnolo gran condo loop) is unaffected by the weather.
