@@SusanCliftonArtist I have started using only the deli paper for cleanup sheets. Then I take my paint covered stencils and lay them down on the cleanup sheets before I wash them and make nice collage fodder. Deli sheets aren’t cheap - as you know - and I thank you every day for the link you had that showed the brand that isn’t folded.

Listening to you talk about your mom and working in a print shop reminds me of when I was little. My dad was a typesetter for a local newspaper. He was a Linotype operator. I used to love going to work with him on Saturday’s. I would watch him set the metal plates that had words on them and send them thru the machine. At the end of the day, he would take a bunch of misprinted papers and cut them down to small notepads for me. I would share them with my cousins and we’d play school with them. Thanks for giving me that awesome memory.

Wow. How interesting! My mom didn't work at a hot metal shop until years later. Or at least I didn't see it until that time. My until for worked for a newspaper and suggested it to my mom because she was a fast typist. But cold type was the only job she could get. It wasn't a job women did. She was ahead of her time.

Just an idea that might work… Try soaking that brayer roller in Murphy’s oil soap. I just soaked some of my dried up acrylic, paint brushes, and after a couple of days I was amazed at how easily the paint washed out and I was able to get the brushes to be reconditioned. May be worth a try.

Thank you for this. I'm really enjoying your videos and learning a lot. In this video, you used a smaller brayer that you said wasn't the right kind. I have a brayer that appears to be made of solid acrylic, which I'm hoping I can use on a gell plate, because I have a life-threatening allergy to latex and can't use rubber products. Do you have any advice on non-rubber brayers? Thanks in advance.

Should you always use fluid paint after your first layer? And does the lighter weight paper have the ability to lift up all of the paint?
@SusanCliftonArtist
@SusanCliftonArtist 8 ай бұрын
Use any paint you like. Everyone has different preferences. I happen to like the fluid paint because it dries fast. And yes the lighter weight has the ability to lift up all the paint. But keep in mind that you have to play with the paint you use and test different times before you pull. I get my best results with the fluid paint at about 2 minutes before I pull. I hope that helps. Thanks for your questions.

I agree with @catherinenicholson7816. If you seal your collage as you should with a quality gel medium It will protect it. This is straight from Golden: The Gel Topcoats, when used as a final layer, should greatly increase the longevity and lightfastness of whatever media you are working with. Overall they will lower water-sensitivity, limit air exposure, and provide substantial UV protection.

Did you purchase from an artist in New England years ago? He was a former airline pilot and set up a home store- neighbors were upset with his popularity due to the car traffic on their road. Later opened a store and the son took over- I believe the store did not last a 3rd generation unfortunately. I’ve only met one other individual who was wearing his puzzle ring design…

Yes, the Sharpie brand permanent markers work well on the gel plates! However, here is my cautionary tale. I taught a local gel printing class and tried the Pen+Gear brand of permanent markers with my students. A few of the colors in that brand stained and soaked deeply into the gel plates. I've made repeated applications of baby oil and the soaked in colors continue to bleed out onto paper that I sandwich the plates between for storage. I got lucky that only a few students in the class selected the particular color of marker that caused the most problems with staining the plates. My guess is that some less expensive brands of permanent markers use high concentrations of alcohol or other solvents in their ink formulations which cause them to penetrate and persist in a gel plate. I would recommend that permanent markers, other than Sharpie, should be tested carefully.
