Discover the phenomenon known as asymmetrical sleep, where parts of an animal's brain are asleep while other areas remain active.
--
Many animals need sleep. But all of the threats and demands animals face don’t just go away when it’s time to doze. That’s why a range of birds, mammals, and even humans experience some degree of asymmetrical sleep, where parts of the brain are asleep and other areas are more active. So, how does it work? Masako Tamaki explores how animals' brains remain vigilant even at their most vulnerable.
Lesson by Masako Tamaki, directed by Biljana Labović.
Animated by Iva Ćirić, designed by Manja Ćirić.

I guess this is what happens when you're a deep sleeper, but when you know you have to wake up early for something very very important the next morning, you will still wake up on your own several times before the alarm starts ringing, and be ready to get up at any second

This video is right on so many levels. After having two in-home invasions and always having the fear of my daughter getting injured, I found that I was sleeping with one ear open, so to speak, since 1999. Now that my daughter is away at college and I'm semi-retired.... I'm now sleeping a lot. I honestly feel like I'm making up for lost time.

I've always considered myself a light sleeper and easy to wake. One thing I always found strange was how often I would wake up a few minutes before getting woken up. About 2 years ago, I got woken up by a noise outside, but I still managed to wake up about a minute before that. That's when a realization hit me. I think part of my brain is always awake, processing sounds, but it's short term, so it's all forgotten. When I get startled awake, those memories are still there, and they get processed and it feels like I've been awake for a few minutes because I have a few minutes of memories being processed. I think that counts as being awake and asleep at the same time.

Same, I'm a light sleeper. I also experience waking up a few minutes or sometimes, an hour before my alarm starts ringing. Any slightest sound, light or touch can really woke me up that's why I wanted to sleep in a very peaceful room so my sleep won't be disturbed.

This is probably the explanation behind my experience before. Years ago, I spent most of my lunch breaks taking naps. Nothing unusual, right? However, I noticed something weird. I was asleep but I could still hear and even follow the conversations around me. I knew I was asleep because I was dreaming at the same time. Like I would suddenly wake up and say “whoah! I just had a dream about this, etc”… people would give me this look that implied “of course you had a dream because you were asleep”. But I couldn’t explain to them that I was asleep and even dreaming but how come I know what they were talking about while I was sleeping. This video finally gave me the explanation that I’ve been looking for. For years I thought I was just hallucinating. 😉

I lived 50 yrs. with little sleep. I wondered why I never dreamed. I had other problems too and at one point I couldn't walk. I went to a concert in Canada and didn't sleep the whole time. And when I got back, I went straight to work. 56 hrs. With no sleep. Then I was diagnosed with Fybromyalgia and my life began at that point. With medication, I have finally begun to dream and feel rested. I'm not in constant pain for the first time and life is more bearable. It's amazing what sleep can do.

My brain did this after I had a baby. It wouldn't let me fall fully asleep and I was always in a state of high alert. If baby cried or whimpered, or even made slight movement while i was holding her I would snap wide awake again. It didn't feel like I fell into deep sleep ever and if I slept I woke up every 30 min to one hour. It was pure agony and I hated it, but it was the biological way my motherly instincts kept me awake to take care of my newborn's needs

I clearly remember one night many years ago. I was in my bed, neither awake nor sleeping. I was thinking about this very tall animal with long legs and a long neck. I also knew, that in several European languages it was called almost the same, but I didn't remember the word giraffe (English), giraf (Danish) or sjiraff (Norwegian). However, I clearly remembered the word twiga (swahili). I was conceived in East Africa by North European parents, who returned home a couple of months before I was born. I have never been in East Africa since I was born, and I don't speak or understand swahili, only very few words, I picked up during my childhood.

When I was a child sleeping & dreaming in my room my mom would barge in to wake me for school. At times she would just start talking to me while I was still asleep. There was a rare moment where I was dreaming and I was hearing her voice talking to me only it was being spoken through a character from the dream I was in. What’s crazy is that I actually talked back to the character in the dream and (according to my mother) i was actually speaking the words in real life , I was laying there in my bed asleep having a conversation with my mother while I was dreaming!

There have been times when my brain has worked so hard on keeping the story going that I don’t fall asleep properly and it feels like I was awake half the night so focused even though my brain tends to wander after I fall asleep. The best memory reinforcement is to take images of every thing. All my travels, special occasions & family pix. I have about 1.5 terabytes of photos, videos & occasions stored in three copies on independent hard drives to protect their loss. Often I slip into clicking on photos & videos to enjoy immensely memories that I had almost forgotten. Looking at the thousands of photos & video clips I live my life again with great enjoyment as all the memories dimmed by time come back clearly to match the memories in my mind. I have done so many things, traveled to so many places and met just wonderful, educated, brilliant people. My photos & videos allow me to meet & befriend them again even though many of them have long passed.

Actually used to experience this half asleep, half awake issue a lot. I had a sleep study done and was surprised to hear that I slept fine since I was aware of the room, sounds and being awake all night. Always wondered how I could be asleep and awake at the same time.

I can still be dreaming and aware of my surroundings and "awake" at the same time sometimes. Or wake up go do stuff and then come back for a nap an the same dream continues where it left of. Sucks when it was a nightmare though 😅

I fell asleep behind the wheel once. I was completely awake, tired as I had been traveling the day before, but leading up to it I remember thinking about calling my cousin soon to catch up, not feeling sleepy or tired really. Before I knew it I was barreling at 80mph into a ditch and jolted “awake”? To try and gain control of my car. I’m lucky I made it out alive. Gives me a huge fear of my energy levels while driving now.

I wanted to see if anyone has similar half-asleep experiences to mine in the comments, but everyone just reuses the same joke as how they are half-asleep during boring activities 😐 Sometimes when I am very tired and try to fall asleep, within minutes I enter a state of "sleepy-wakefulness" where I see made-up images and events that I did not consciously brought up, very reminiscent of dreams. The difference with actual dreaming is that I am still somewhat conscious at the time and I am able to properly snap out of it if I so want to. Does anyone else recall having a similar experience?

I agree, I prefer thought provoking commentary and original wit than the overused responses. Regarding your question: no it's not just you 😁. If you want, have fun with it, see if you can direct it or dig deep into the mental imagery and sensations in that state.

@@Sol-Amar Huh, curious. Is there a name for this condition? I remember searching for it using various queries and wordings, but nothing relevant came up. Everything that pops up is about lucid dreaming or sleep paralysis, which are different, since the phenomenon I am describing happens before actual sleep occurs.

@@Leonhart_93 Yeah I wouldn't classify it as neither sleep paralysis nor lucid dreaming. I think the term hypnagogia is appropriate. You can read about it using the following link below: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnagogia (Or just search hypnagogia in a search engine.) Good luck!

I was asleep but was awake at the same time. I knew I was asleep but I can see myself walking without my command. It was midnight and I just saw myself walking towards the bathroom, defecating, cleaned my bum. Half of the stuff I did, I know I was asleep, I only got a glimpse of myself doing that only for few seconds but I know I was sleeping. It was so unreal for me. I knew I was sleeping but my body moves on its own and I felt like I was inside of it, just sitting while my body does all the work and my brain just sat and watched. I still couldn't forget about it to this day.

I'm pretty sure my sleep is unihemispherical. There are often times I know what time it is before I wake up. And other times were I go to bed after having a long failure of a day, have no dreams, and yet when I wake up I have several solutions to yesterday's problems. It seems that some half of my brain is routinely pulling all nighters.

Commenting at 0:00. I just want to say that your brain must be awake to an extent in the same way that your TV must always be powered to receive a signal telling it to "turn on". The brain is capable of waking up from many different stimuli. Other than the ones we're all aware of like bright lights and loud noises, deaf people are known to be able to sense the shadowed silhouette of a person through their bedroom window at night.
