The attempted redefinition of racism as "discrimination+power" is a horrific way to make racism acceptable as long as it is "aimed at the right target." It's all _bigotry,_ which is the word we actually need to start using. Since so many people are trying to twist the meaning of racism, we need to just start calling it what it is; I don't think anyone would argue that bigotry is OK, and racism is bigotry.
@JakeKoenig

Not to mention, the people they claim are "in power" (white people) aren't actually in power. What kind of white supremacist country would allow anti-white bigotry to be openly and constantly spread by literally anyone? If anything, America is a black supremacist nation, a Jewish supremacist nation, and an LGBTQ supremacist nation. THOSE are the people you're not even allowed to criticize, much less be bigoted toward, without severe repercussions.

Seriously 100% and as a white male it's "inappropriate" to even defend ourselves, it's considered "racist." I treat everyone I meet with respect, and I don't judge people based on their skin color. Equality does not mean "spread the hate around," but that's what's happening now. If you need to hate on anyone, hate the rich, not that that's ok either, but at least it makes more sense. My great grandparents were poor polish immigrants. They came over just before WW1. My family didn't have anything to do with the American slave trade. I've been poor my whole life, and the only thing my "white privilege" ever amounted to was getting turned down for government assistance when I truly needed it. I don't resort to hating people that weren't turned down, it's not their fault, I hate the fundamentally flawed system we all live under. The world's not right, and more hate isn't gonna fix it

It’s very simple. Racism isn’t the same thing as oppression. Racial oppression can exist and it’s both racist AND oppressive. Redefining “racism” to mean “racial oppression” doesn’t add any utility to the language. It actually detracts from the utility and only serves to excuse racism against whites as acceptable. We have a perfectly effective and concise language to describe all of these ideas without redesigning the wheel.

I see all these woke black ppl praising Disney for hiring a black person to play a role that was always a white person instead of putting the effort in to acc create a new compelling “minority” character. Honestly it reminds me of the "token chick" in cartoons in the 80s and 90s, where you would get a virtually copy cat character of the male lead, but female...and she had to be pink. They tried to do that with Xena, as a counterpart to Hercules, but luckily the writing and the actors made the show its own thing, that in my opinion ended up being far far superior to the Hercules show. Because she ended up being her own story and character. Give us those black legends, stories, myths, histories, id personally LOVE to explore them, especially since those stories contribute to who a people are.

@hailee1001 I wish this was always the case, but when I ask many questions, even though I am asking them in an attempt to reduce my own ignorance, it is always taken as some sort of attack or othering. I have also attempted to compliment someone on their hair or their skin tone and have been given hate in response. There is no benefit of the doubt and no quarter given for just not knowing. A simple slip of the toungue or misunderstanding can result in a full-on diatribe about racism and bigotry. That makes it a lot harder to reach out and make those connections. Especially if you are already nervous to begin with. "Just don't ask" leads to more ignorance and misunderstandings, not less.

My two cents is that racism doesn’t make sense. If you don’t know someone, you don’t know them. You can’t judge someone’s character by their skin-tone, let alone blame them for the actions of other people who share a physical trait. Treat people as individuals and not some sort of racial group representative. We’re all just people, and we are our own person. You can probably learn more about a person by their shoes than the color of the feet that wear them.

Humans have a natural hardwired tendency towards tribalism. This can be seen in all societies across the world through all of recorded history. While this is often played out in the world through racism (the most visually obvious difference), it also plays out through sectarianism and classism where race is less important. These issues will very likely stay with us forever. Education and open dialogue is our best defense against the worst of these tendencies.

Racism is illogical, not irrational. Our brains are lazy an instinctively develop biases on pattern recognition. For instance, most public doors open-out because of fire codes, so we generally assume to push a door to leave and it's mildly annoying when you have to pull it open to leave. It's rational because, typically, people don't change their location often, which is closely tied to culture and phenotype. It's illogical because we know culture is shared beliefs, values, and traditions, and is not inherent to skin tone (UK vs US culture). Our primitive brains don't reflect the modern reality that people can move around the globe quickly and integrate into other cultures and tribes.

The fact that less and less white people get « less » job opportunities sucks but maybe it’s not because black peoples or whoever else are taking their « rightful » places, it’s because there is a literal JOB SHORTAGE. can you see the difference? cause based on your whiney comment, it sounds like you believe that black people cannot get where they want to be on their own unless they take a white persons place, but let me ask you why is the default « white people deserve their job position/uni admission etc »? why isn’t it « everyone deserves to be where they want to be and the system has to make it possible for everyone to succeed without the need to use discrimination » ?? reflect on that

Nowhere in nature does equality of opportunity lead to the same outcomes. 19:07 So, I have a different take on this, I don't care if the character is race swapped. I care if they are using that as a shield and cudgel to beat down people who call out a movie for being bad. Velma as an example, that show was hot garbage, not because of the race swaps, but because everything was done poorly, and while unsuccessful they attempted to use those race swaps as a shield to protect them from criticism, and a cudgel to attack people who didn't like it.

I get annoyed with race-swaps when it's done to make a point rather than to make the final product the best it can be. For example, Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury was brilliant. It felt like he was meant for that role. The recent Cleopatra fiasco, by comparison, was cast with race in mind rather than talent, because there was a specific agenda behind it. You can feel when an actor has been cast for political reasons, and it makes it feel like the political thing is more important to the makers than the story they're trying to tell. It's the same with authors when they write. If you read enough, you can tell when an author is writing for money, and when they care about their stories and how they're presenting them.

Finally, someone who really knows what he's talking about. This is the first time I've read someone give the real definition of racism.
@Neekazan
@Neekazan Жыл бұрын
These definitions are what I was taught in school: Descrimination: the human thought process of seeing difference between yourself and others. The difference can be as little as the other person isn't in your family, or more obvious reasons such as different skin color. It's natural to have prejudice. The example I was given was, say your son and another boy (same race, just a different family) had an altercation. Which side do you take without knowing the details of what happened? Most would say their own son. Prejudice: automatically disliking someone because of discriminating that they're different from you wether it be skin color, religion or other. Taking the above example and expanding on it, say the other child is Jewish and you are Christian. If after seeing the altercation was caused by your child stealing ing the other's lunch, you still take your child's side because it the other kid doesn't deserve his meal because he's a Jew... now that's prejudiced. Racism: is oppressing someone for their race. It can be argued that only those in power can be racist, but it's subjective and/or situational. Say a white person is walking alone in a predominantly black neighborhood, and is surrounded by several black people who want to harm them for coming into their neighborhood. Who has the power in that situation? Oppression: the act of diminishing someone's worth as a human being. Looking down on someone soley based on their differences to you is wrong. Wanting to harm someone because they're different from you is wrong.
@Ravynwulf1
@Ravynwulf1 Жыл бұрын
The whole "only those in power can be racist" is something only relatively recently taught. When I took sociology in college, back in the 2000s, it was taught there were different levels of racism. Systemic level racism was the only level where power is required, there is also interpersonal or individual level racism, which is just every day interactions or the discriminatory beliefs held by an individual

Racism stems at root from the hierarchization of human ethnic groups. It refers to the fact of inferiorizing a whole group of humans on the simple criterion of their ethnicity. So it doesn't matter who's in power or who's dominant, as long as you inferiorize someone based on ethnic criteria, that's racism. Saying that someone is bad just because they have a particular skin color is racism.

Everyone doesn't care about that because it is plausible since she could black since it's modern day New York but when it comes to something like the little mermaid witch is a story from Denmark 200/300 years ago it's jarring, it's not like Africa doesn't have 1000's of mermaid stories that could be made into film.

On paper, it's not that illogical that the Little Mermaid is black. It's worth noting that Disney's original film relocated the plot to the Caribbean seas. The story no longer takes place in Denmark. But for me, it's mainly the intention behind this change that bothers me. They didn't make this change for artistic reasons, but for ideological ones. As a result, the final product is less sincere and authentic. Personally, I'm not at all a fan of this process unless it's really a desire of the author because he finds it artistically interesting. That's why I can accept that the character of Nick Fury is played by Samuel L Jackson, because it was Stan Lee's wish in terms of his artistic vision of the character on film. But for Ariel, it's just a political decision.

I grew up in a rather culturally diverse family though all of us identified as white despite being rather mixed: Native American, Black, and Mexican were all part of our family. I can recall my father being accused of kidnapping me one time because I'm so fair skinned and he's a dark olive skin tone (if you have to know my dad's family is Mexican, Spanish and Irish). It was so deeply traumatizing for me as a kid to see my dad pulling out baby photos to prove to strangers so they wouldn't try to call cops in a public place. I can't remember my exact age but it was between 5 and 7 years old. The fact I still remember it nearly twenty years later shows the impact it can have on kids. I hated when the term white privilege came up because I had grown up seeing how racism and classism affected my father and now people wanted to say I had privilege because I was white when all I did was have less melanin in my skin than my father. I still grew up in my preteens and early teens being judged when my father went to prison just because we shared a last name despite being raised by mother's family and the entire community knew it. The judge on his case saying he was just like his father that went to prison for things he did because of PTSD during Vietnam back when there wasn't support for Vietnam veterans and people barely understood PTSD. I experienced discrimination so much as a child and well into my young adulthood until I moved away. It's hard for me to be okay I have white privilege with those experiences.

If a person scores two points lower on a test but has had to deal with greater adversity, like they have to cook for and take care of their siblings (with whom they share a bedroom/study space) while their single parent works a second job, doesn't their score indicate that they worked harder and achieved more than a student that has their own private study space, has no chores to do and has a two-parent household where educated parents help them with their homework? There is an effort to narrow the definition of the word "merit" so that it applies to fewer poor people and people of color. This shouldn't be difficult to see or to understand.

Character race swapping should be unnecessary, just create new ones or use the multitude of black/poc characters that already exist. To me, all this race swapping feels like more revenge being played out on people who, in all likelihood, weren't remotely associated with the racism and slavery of the past. You want a black superman, well, there's already examples of that character in comics and it'd be easy enough to create a world where other people survived the destruction of Krypton...as if there wouldn't be considering how advanced they were. Or black flash, see Wally West...Spawn is another original character that's black...i could go on. My ultimate point is this: don't wreck beloved characters if your goal is actually diversity, use the ones we already have or if they feel those characters aren't good enough for you create new ones...really that simple. You have to have something you love, some toy, car, game or whatever. Imagine they changed it on you, not just the color but the rules so that only certain colors can now have thale advantage...may be a poor example but i hope I'm getting my point across.

I think there is a massive difference between have A conversation and have "the conversation" in regards to discrimination and racism. Having A conversation implies that both sides are contributing to a hope of finding common ground and an overall understand of one another. "The Conversation" is what we see from the majority of people in this video; which is, regurgitating what they have been told in the media. The current conversation isn't about developing an understanding but more so about pointing the finger and trying to raise one side up by bringing another one down. Having a conversation between individuals or a group CAN BE healthy and educational. Unfortunately we will never get that from massive groups shouting at each other and the media constantly trying to divide us. The best way is to stop talking about race all together. Stop referring to people as a black man or a white man, they are both just men. But this is a utopian wish and will never actually happen.

Would you put someone in jail or execute them because their great-grandfather committed murder? Mate, I agree with you wholeheartedly. My close circle contains people of Vietnamese, Sri Lankan, Polynesian, Caucasian descent. Why ? I live by the motto of “if you’re nice to me I’m nice to you & vice versa” & I feel the quality of friendship isn’t diluted because I’m open to the person, not the colour. There are good people all around the world. I’m a very pale red head in Australia - we are picked on as children like it’s a right of passage. I grew up poor. Lived in some of the poorest neighbourhoods. Have worked my butt off over 25 years just to earn an “average” wage, with no shortcuts. Yet, every so often I have a “person of a particular coloured appearance” randomly approach me (usually in an intoxicated state) & tell me of my history of privilege, how I enslaved people hundreds of years ago & how “my people” are holding that person & their lineage back. Change isn’t instantaneous - too many factors - but it is happening. It astonishes me how people today, live historically instead of appreciating today & plan to better tomorrow. As an Aboriginal elder once told our School when I was younger “it’s ok to remember the past, but hold yourself up with pride, aim to better yourself & help better tomorrow for all” - I loved that & try my best to live by it. The world will always have racism, but it’s up to each successive generation to ensure that those who think based upon colour are such a small group it doesn’t even register. Yes well that is the thing, America is a Melting Pot we always have been, so it's annoying when people say that were racist, slavery was not just a black thing it just so happened that black slavery was the last one to be abolished, it never was about race it was about a market. It doesn't make it right, but the fact is America fought a war to end it, all these other countries that keep their populations a certain way have the right to, they have their borders. I just get frustrated with people allowing their differences to be an issue instead of embracing it, if you're an American citizen you are an American oh, we don't need to slap labels on everybody here. Socioeconomics always will come into play, but if you lived in India it doesn't matter your part of the caste system there so you might all be Indians but there are some rich, some middle class and some poor and it's just the way it is over there. Here you can succeed or fail no matter what your race is, and sometimes it doesn't matter how hard you were if you don't have the right opportunity, I have had to live in a car for certain periods of my life, even while I was working 60 hours a week, because that is just the way my hand has been dealt. I hear about white privilege but I have never felt White Privilege even though if you look at me you would definitely think I'm pretty much white, but I don't whine and cry about my Situation's I work through it. I also love all people and cultures and have friends in all the lower levels of society, I really don't have any friends that are doctors or lawyers or anything like that that are well-to-do, because money recognizes money and they sure recognize when you don't have it. That does not bother me because I don't really care for rich people, I don't envy them either. I just wish we could realize that the true enemy is the 1% and we need to stick together. This isn't Japan, this isn't China, this isn't India, we are a Melting Pot so we should act like a Melting Pot and mix together to make a very wonderful stew, not some sort of chemistry experiment gone wrong. Stop blaming white people for everything, stop blaming circumstances, we all have to take responsibility for our own decisions and work together to make it better not just overcorrecting things which inevitably makes things just as bad as they were just in a different direction. I always have to ask my friends when they're being racist how they could be friends with me if I love the people that they claim to be hating or I am the people they claim to be hating? It makes zero sense, you will always meet a bonehead from every race or culture, there is no perfect person here on Earth, so generalizing people and lumping them into groups is about the most ridiculous thing that you can do oh, it just shows you are an insecure person.

I believe social services that pay for children to not go hungry is acceptable because children aren't at the age to work thus should be cared for, people who are injured and can't work should also be taken care of. I believe exceptions like this should exist. However I don't believe "everyone" deserves all of there needs to be met when they contribute nothing and or do nothing. Equal Opportunity means that everyone has the same opportunity to achieve. Its not about raising people up so much as its about eliminating things that keep them down. The ultimate goal is that they take care of themselves and achieve what they will. And equal opportunity makes sure there aren't things "put" in there way to keep them back.

The issue regarding the fictional movies and shows does matter somewhat depending on what the source material is, if the source material is based on pure American works, (i.e. Star Wars, inspired by a Japanese movie but with enough differences to become it's own thing) or if the source material is a cultural thing (i.e. Heimdall which is a Norse Deity, The Lord of the Rings heavily based on and using many elements of Norse and Celtic mythos, or the Little Mermaid which is an adaptation of a Danish fairy tale). I think that if the roles were reversed and Disney made an adaptation of an African folk tale with a white person playing the lead, there would be a huge call for racism, furthermore this puts a roadblock in giving other ethnicities proper representation in original stories and tales to enrich the culture, not just repainting European culture. I believe a good example would be a French cartoon released in the late 90' "Kirikou et la Sorcière" ("Kirikou and the Sorceress" in English, an original tale based on African folk tales and depicting African culture, I highly recommend to give it a look, and then let me know if you agree with me that there should be more original works like "Kirikou et la Sorcière" and less recolorized versions of European folk tales?

In his second term, he played the race card even though he was the f-ing president, which kicked off the mass victim mentality and the discriminatory policies and treatment of White and Asian people. His wife is even more insufferable. Race relations in this country were good before Obama's second term in 2012. In 2012, sh*t started to hit the fan regarding race relations, and this isn't a coincidence. In my eyes, Obama is one of the top 5 most destructive and divisive presidents in U.S. history.

I drove a middle school bus in 2001, I drove in Graham, NC. I had a busy load of children who came in lots of colors and sizes. I was assigned the bus nobody wanted because of the tension on the bus. These kids were unable to sit through a 45 minute ride without fighting over, their color, and or the argument of privilege because they were not yet old enough to claim power, although they thought they were. I learned so much. It was the first time I was exposed to both points of view. I wish I had taken recordings of the various points of view I was exposed to. I found the comments that exposed racial thought patterns were very similar in either race. I didn't have Asian students so I can't speak about that. But among black and white families these children believed closely the way their parents did. Both seemed to confirm their right to denigrate the other to a large degree. In other words, "I have a right to hate you and not trust you because you are _____." Fill in the color. In my opinion what they all shared in common was basic poverty and they were taught to cope by believing they had been pushed there by each other. I drove for 3 years. What changed on my bus was the rules, which were posted and the fact that I measured out justice and responsibilities as color blind as I was short. 4'10". I refused to listen to arguments based on color issues and if you picked a fight on my bus it was always with me, not other students. It took half a year to work through this. So yes racism is alive and well in all colors. But I have seen where poverty is both the invisible creator and sustainer of societal racism. To me racism in America is a form of hidden caste system and thrives because we lack the ability to refuse to pass judgement and we base a lot of this perception on personal biases and prejudice. So I believe, racism is based on perceived color advantages or disadvantages and thrives in humans because we refuse to recognize this method of judgement is fed through poverty and want. Just a thought, and purely my opinion, I apologize if you were offended by my comment.

There are five distinct definitions of the word "racist." 1. Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism toward a person or a group of people based on ethnicity or culture. 2. The belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another. 3. Actions or statements that promote these type of beliefs 4. The systemic oppression of a racial group to the social, economic, and political advantage of another. 5. A political or social system founded on racism and designed to execute its principles. The only one of these definitions that would limit racism to certain groups, and excuse racism from other groups are Definitions 4 and 5. But even then, it depends on the society in question. I mean, sure, here in the US white people are the perpetrators under definitions 4 and 5. But in Japan? Or Kenya? Or Korea? Or India? I offered a thought experiment once to a college ethics class I was teaching once in response to the idea that racism was "power + prejudice." Imagine two men, one white, one black. They are standing nose-to-nose and screaming racial epithets at each other. Which one is the racist? The common perception would be the white guy... except the two of them are standing in the middle of Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a nation ruled by black people and where black people have all the socio-economic power. Guess its the black guy after all. So the two men get into an airplane and fly to New York City, where they return to shouting epithets at each other. Suddenly, as if by magic, the white guy is the racist. Then the two men get on a second airplane and go to Tokyo, and again they return to shouting racial insults each other. Which one is the racist now? Well, neither of them. In Japan, neither white people nor black people have the socio-economic power. This thought experiment sort of puts paid to the idea that only white people can be racist due to "power + prejudice".

UMMMMMM Racism is not based on skin color - which as soon as you say that, I know you aren't informed. The Jewish people who were persecuted were fair-skinned. The Kurdish Genocide was enacted by the Iraqis who are basically the same skin tone. Oh, but you gotta isolate yourself and don't realize there is a whole world going on around you. Racism is when a broad generality is made about a group of people of similar ethnic background which implies negative qualities about them - thus "justifying" any mistreatment of them (in the eye of the person being "Racist").

I think people get too caught up in skin color because it is overtly visible. White people have in fact oppressed other white people. It isn't about skin color, its about position and circumstance. The reason we have such a huge problem here in the US is that for the most part the HAVES have traditionally been white and the HAVE NOTS have traditionally been everyone else. Take 10 seconds some time and watch the difference between those who think they are entitled and those who do not, you'll usually see disgust from the powerful and disdain from the powerless.. and there you get modern "racism". Everyone uses hateful words to describe other people when we are hurt by them.

I think that simply giving people what they haven't earned, like entry to university or jobs was never a good idea. The focus should have been on improving conditions in targeted areas, especially education, so that they could earn it themselves. And if they still faced a lack of opportunity despite having excellent qualifications, then give those people a startup opportunities with help experienced advisors and funding, where they themselves could hire others like themselves who though qualified had faced discrimination. If they had done that in the 60s and 70s, I'd bet we'd have a lot more companies that were originally minority startups and that would have since then changed corporate culture, and neighborhoods, local communities by their existence. The problem was that affirmative action seems to want to "cheat" by giving struggling groups access and seats at a table they haven't really earned instead of someone who had worked to merit that seat. And it does so for the most superficial reasons, like skin color or gender so that a university or company can fill its quota. Those who do get in this way to university are already behind everyone else as the standards were lowered to get them in, so many end up eventually dropping out. It would be one thing if "affirmative action" was more about helping financially, so that any student from a certain set of parameters who got into state university got their education and dormitory etc. funded. That it helped locate job opportunities and fund eventual relocations for those jobs if they were out of state- but the actual hiring process was your own responsibility. That the organization would have a large index of which companies, big and small, were known for being non-discriminating and those that were known to be so (so a waste of time to apply- and the company's loss of qualified talent because of it). That is the way I would have done it. That way you help but not so much that anyone doubts that they got where they are by anything else than merit. Unlike the way it is these days.

i'm a french guy in his 4Os and i'm scared by the woke movement invasion. You see here we had a pretty different history than in USA. we had what we call "les lumières" (literally the lights) which was an intellectual revolutionary mouvement which celbrated humanism (and shortly its incompatible with racism). Of course it doesn't guarantee there are no racism in France, there are people scared by differences and not understanding them everywhere in the word, but it meant the system, the government doesn't recognize race nor religions it is blind to these considerations and thus can't discriminate based on these criteria. But since a few years, and i think mainly because USA's soft power with all the hollywoods movies and all the shows that you export to us, the idea of positive discrimination has been a thing. And from my understanding, a discrimination based on race is almost racism. Sure you can discriminate without pretending there is a hierarchy between races, but from a scientific point of view the notion of human race is very weak (if not totaly irrelevant) as genetic difference between ethnic groups is meaningless compared to differences between one person and another (whatever their respective etnic group is). So here in France, we still don't speak of races for human beings but of ethnic groups (which generaly refers more to a cultural aspect than to a genetic one, but even in scientific publications in french language if they were discuss genetic diff between groups of people they still use the word "ethnie" andd not "race"), might sound like a details to some but it's crucial to me, so when i hear about safe space discriminating people based on ther race i can't avoid to think about Rosa Park, what they call "safe space" i call that apartheid... So yeah here's my request : please USA, stop exporting your woke movement to France (yeah i know, nothin u can do if we keep on buying it... But still I can't help asking it)

I work in healthcare and I have for the last 25 years... however it has only been in the last 2 to 3 years that I have had to broach this subject in the workplace. I've had 2 or 3 deeply melinated people tell me that the people who are there with me working are "racist" ... and blame all their woes on their race. Which I could only say what I feel... which is "No one in my group of coworkers is racist." infact there are some who are far from that more sexist than racist... I know quite a number of Drs who work the ER rotations who are not of "European" decent who are DEEPLY sexist. They treat women poorly... they talk down to them... etc... I tell them that honestly we are there to do our job... which is to assess the situation... do what we can to improve their health and wellbeing... and to determine the cause of their health problem... that is all nothing more. Don't care what color you are... don't care where you came from... don't care what your economic status is... only concern is what brought you to the ER today... and how can we help. Now... 1 of those persons who believed us to be "Racist" had broken the law... was heavily intoxicated... and causing a scene... was brought in by the police. Again... I honestly do not care... but I'm the kind of empathetic individual that if you come in with attitude and are being beligerant and toxic... it can reflect back... as I have little tolerance for toxicity... I try to tell people that in the ER we don't see skin color. We see x-rays... we see labs... and that's about it. Just want to do my job and be done. Just like anyone else... Do I think that there isn't racism in my community.... heck no! I've seen it raise it's ugly head. I try to believe that I am not racist. I always treat everyone as I want to be treated. I am kind, polite, and try to be a good human being. I think racism is ugly... I remember in high school being asked what we thought the world would be like in the year 2000... I said "Star Trek"... because I had hopes we could be "one nation"... Earth... had hopes we could leave borders behind... and work together as one nation to better the world as a whole. But of late I feel we are throwing that all away... in the last few years I feel we have abandoned all reason for insanity... I am sadly afraid things are going to get worse. Do not think that in my lifetime I will ever see what I had hoped to see happen and it makes me sad.

A person doesn't inherently deserve anything. "Deserve" means to have earned it. We are too sensitive about what other people say. I've never let being called a racial slur impact my life. What ever happened to "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me?" Most black people I know would rather have an original black story told in a movie than have a traditionally white role supplanted with a black person. I was lucky enough to grow up with people of many cultures, and never developed a sense of hate, or to even ever think about skin color. I have also experienced in business that certain races are more difficult to deal with, or even flat out dishonest. While this represents a large portion of a specific of a culture I've dealt with in business, it does not make me dislike these people because of their culture. People who come here from other countries don't always understand the way business is conducted here. I will also say, one of the big issues I see when it comes to "job discrimination" has to do with how people present themselves, through how they dress and their manner of speaking. No one wants to talk to a customer service person that is difficult to understand. Just like no one wants to hire someone with baggy pants hanging halfway down their backside for a corporate job. You need to present an image that is representative of the job you are applying to.

I'm unconvinced that fictional characters versus nonfictional characters is as clean of a line as is being presented. For many people, there are fictional characters, even obviously fictional ones, that they identify with more strongly than even a famous real person who died a century ago. Since people's identity does include how they look, I think it's important to have a conversation about *both* cases. As other comments have pointed out with Ariel, we should be considering both the people who will be able to more closely identify with the character, as well as those who will have a diminished ability to do so.

And it made me feel SO bad, both for him and myself. If you see Korea's history as being occupied more often than not, you do see the reasons for their rigid homogeneous outlook on their society and culture, but that doesn't mean it isn't hurtful or racist (it very much is). That isn't growth, and that goes for all different cultures and races. "You're white so your opinion doesn't matter" is hurtful, especially when you asked my opinion in the first place. And as a white woman in the South, my basic human rights are also getting taken away (Roe v Wade overturning). I don't have rights to my own body, so don't drag me for being white.

Americas obsession with race always struck me as odd. I remember first time getting into reading Stephen King. Whenever he wrote about about a black person the color of their skin was so front and center in each paragraph it made me think he wanted to portray that as their main trait. Everytime i read about Detta Walker, mother Abigail or anyone it was always so prominent. Not just during their introduction. Every time they appeared on page. It felt like "Abigail, who as a quick reminder still was black, entered the room." I also have a personal anecdote to the push to inclusion creating division. As a child addicted to pop culture i never made much out of race. When a new Eddy Murphy movie came out i wanted to see, because he was hilarious. Will Smith movies were always slappin. Also Terminator and Aliens were among my favorite movies. Now? Black Panther was the first Marvel movie i skipped. These days when i hear about a movie promoting their diverse cast or female leads that movie is fighting an uphill battle from the start. I roll my eyes and sometimes prematurely decide to not like the movie and to skip it. This inclusivity push has made me a worse person. Not because i am much more racist now. Because i always expect an agenda these days.

what i find is that people who seek others perspectives tend to understand reality better. Traveling helps with seeking other perspectives, but living somewhere else forces those other perspectives. For instance the fact that you spend half your time between the US and Spain provides forced perspective where you're able to show the differences between how you are treated in the US vs Europe. I didn't realize Europeans default blacks as being from Africa rather than Europe, because here in the US we assume blacks are from the US. My view is that it is impossible to answer to arrogance and hate with arrogance and hate. It doesn't help to move the world forward. All humans are amazing. We come in many different hair, eye and skin colours, in different heights and widths and in different genders. That is just how it is and it is part of life and the beauty of it. I have always called out racism and always educated myself. Unfortunately, one of my partners had a lot of hate and rage towards white people, which he hid from the outside world and everyone loved him. I suffered extreme domestic violence, rape, and finally homelessness. I am currently living in a women's refuge. Unfortunately, some women here also have hate to white people. They wonder why I am there and they say that if they were white they would never end up in a women's refuge for domestic abuse, plus they say that because I am white I deserved to be abused. I am the only white woman in the house and they invest their hate and pain about white people onto me. This once got so bad, that the threats that I received made me too scared to leave my room for a week and had to do my business in a bucket in my room, while they rejoiced over the power they felt they had though this. I reached out about this to the staff of the refuge but they did not recognise it as discrimination, because I am white, and they said that these issues were probably just some personal quarrels between me and the other ladies and I just had to deal with it. Thankfully, some of those bullying residents have now moved out and some new women have come in their place. There is one new lady I click with really well, it is like we are old soul friends. Some of the other ladies have a problem with this and resent both of us for the friendship, because this newer lady is the most melanated person in the house. They assume she should be their friend and not mine. They witness the love and warmth between me and her, however they still do not realise that not everything is about skin colour, and that I am not a bigoted or bad person who deserves bad things. All this time that they spent hating, I have always treated them with love, respect and courtesy, despite their behaviour. I am left wondering how fine the line can be between fear of white people and fear or racism, and racism in itself, and that sometimes they are or have become separate things, dressed up as the same thing. I think treating people as equals and on a case by case basis takes more emotional courage and openness. Some people prefer to hate on the external world, believing that hate is the answer to hate or a way to restoring internal confidence. That is really sad and hurt just keeps recycling this way. I have always known that my power, happiness and confidence comes from within and not from anywhere else, and this will never change, and I wish others knew this too. I am trying to focus on myself and improving my mental and emotional strength again on the inside. It would make life so much easier if we all just let each other be and focused on ourselves, and helped each other in positive and practical ways. Together we can make a better world with more support to learning self-love in children and adults and more equal opportunities. That's what I want to dedicate my life towards.

I think showing diversity during early development is very important, like showing people of different colors in textbooks and stories and similar.
