Ah yes, the requirements in dark souls 1 were a little particular: if i remember correctly a weapon's strength requirement was always equal to (weight * 2) + 4, the pike's requires are an unfortunate side effect of this. Edit: ALMOST always, i checked and the formula seems to not apply to weapons that weight over 20.0
@PressContinue2 жыл бұрын
I guess the pike should have simply not weighed that much to begin with or simply be a strength scaling weapon instead

I thought of it as, to two hand a weapon you take the original strength requirement divid it in half, the divid it in half again and add on the first number to the second and that’s how much strength you needed, so if it was 36 strength you would need 27 cuz 18 + 9 = 27. Keep in mind I was only 11 when I thought of this so it could definitely be wrong

Well... thats... dumb. The whole point of a pike is to have the reach advantage. The charge R2 should allow you to hit enemies really hard from far away, not have some dumb niche attack for guys on horseback or stupid birds. Fromsoft just can't get their pikes right. In each game it has issues. In DS1 it's too heavy and has high strength requirements for a dex weapon. In DS2 and DS3 the damage output is really sub-par and it's a bitch to acquire in DS3 to begin with. And in Elden Ring, the game where R2's matter more than ever before, it's an attack with almost zero reach. The pike just always gets the shaft it seems

The Pinwheel fight being harder this go around makes perfect sense to me. Pinwheel was very obviously designed around the assumption that players might go after him very early. From a designer's perspective, the logic is sound: why _wouldn't_ players want to bum rush the boss to get access to more healing? (The answer, of course, is that when you're an experienced player, you often don't need the extra healing). In any event, the boss was tuned to be a challenge for low-level characters with low damage output. In practice, this didn't end up happening. Going UP to the Undead Burg and all the areas branching from there is far more intuitive. Especially since their alternatives are The Bone Zone (with endlessly reassembling skeletons and Wheel Skeletons) and The Ghost Zone (with enemies you can't even normally damage). OF COURSE people would put off going to these places until they'd exhausted their other options. So in a vast majority of playthroughs, people don't reach Pinwheel until they've already upgraded their stats and weapons to the point where their DPS outpaces the build-up of illusory duplicates. To the point where people just _assume_ that Pinwheel is a joke, by default. Rather than it being a direct result of how people approach the game. It's only when you get meme runs like this that you start seeing Pinwheel in the mode that, in retrospect, he was always intended to be occupy.
@vonskeedle5309 Жыл бұрын
I always thought Pinwheel should get some kind of buff after beating O&S or placing the lord vessel. That way the fight is reasonable no matter if you fight him early or when actually going for Nito.
@D_Abellus Жыл бұрын
I fought Pinwheel after only beating Capra and Tauros Demon and he's still a joke. Weirdly enough, even a +2 or +3 weapon just does way too much damage to him. But the area is so much harder to get through period if you don't have that. Pinwheel is just badly designed along with the bone zone to me.
@Bluecho4 Жыл бұрын
@@D_Abellus It's very weird, yes. The Bone Zone is a pretty tricky area, especially for new or underpowered players. Whereas the boss of the area ends up being a joke by comparison, unless you're so undertuned you'd have trouble even reaching Pinwheel. The game puts what should be a tough low level boss and gates them behind a nightmare level.
@st.haborym Жыл бұрын
Exactly. Pinwheel is only stupidly easy because most people don't fight him til after O&S, and by then you're massively overpowered for such a weak boss.

For far more early game damage from sorceries and magic weapon, if you can manage to kill the hydra (it can take a long time but it's not too hard to do damageless even with a crap weapon if you practice enough), you can get the Oolacile Ivory Catalyst which gives you 180 flat magadj, the same as a sorcerer's catalyst with 27 INT, iirc. Just something to consider for future runs if you hadn't, already.
@PressContinue2 жыл бұрын
Well I did get the oolacile catalyst after killing the hydra as you could see, but I was told by chat that the regular catalyst is only out-scaled at higher int levels, so I just stuck with the regular stick until the end-game. So we did discuss it but I didn't know myself and maybe they were going by assumptions as well. Also I assumed that the Hydra would be a massive problem with the pike charge, so that would have prevented me from killing it early as well. However that assumption also turned out to be wrong.

@@wedding2710 yes! I have seen it many times in comment sections since I started participating in them ~2013. Every time a new face appeared in a video it was met with vitriol. The comments were flooded with hate and disgust that boiled down to: "How dare this thing I like change, even slightly?" I believe this gut reaction I had comes from a similar place as those comments. A result of too much sitting down, too much content digestion, and not enough remembering what I am seeing was made by a fellow human being, who has good days and bad days, as well as good ideas and bad ideas, and even further than that, ideas that mesh well with me and ideas that do not. I'm kinda surprised you didn't upgrade the pike down the magic path with green titanite to avoid having to deal with Capra for the large ember. I barely have the patience for him on a normal run so it's impressive you got him here with this
@PressContinue Жыл бұрын
Because then my damage output would have suffered by quite a lot.
@HeavenlyHavoc Жыл бұрын
@@PressContinue oh yeah that does make sense. I was stuck in ds2 mindset and forgot you can't buff infused weapons in the other games so yeah that would've been shite

Why do you have two st*cks? “One’s for showin’ and one’s for blo-“
@orbisvae23342 жыл бұрын
If you upgraded your Pike to Lightning after fighting Ornstein and Smaug, you would only get a slight damage reduction (about 10-20 units), but gain stable elemental damage (to which most enemies in the game are vulnerable), great poise break and avoid having to apply a temporary buff and spend a HUGE number of levels for pumping intellect for GMW. Oh, and no need to upgrade your Dex for better scaling)
@PressContinue2 жыл бұрын
No that would have been a huge mistake. Like really huge. I would have had a massive reduction especially in the DLC and it would have been beyond useless against Gwyn. It would not increase poise break, which I didn't really have in the first place. And most of my damage came from my magic buffs anyway which add damage rather than split them. So those levels in INT were well spent. So no, I very very very much disagree. That would have been a grave mistake

@@PressContinue Look, I'm not gonna argue without any proofs) Gonna get some testing myself, than I'll back with specific damage numbers and data in general
