4:43 - I think it's so well modeled even with low Level of Detail because it used to sit right in the middle of the map instead of way off to the side. My guess is at some point they wanted to make sure you weren't too distracted by it and could see the Erd Tree from everywhere and so that the Tree would visually always be your goal. They probably made the decision to move it out to the side. You can kind of tell where it used to be cause they tried to cover the change to the map art with some clouds, I think. Edit: Oh yah, you check that area on the map a few seconds later. I'm pretty sure that's where Farum Azula used to be at some point in development.

that's super interesting, and it makes a lot of sense. that's probably why liurnia and limgrave are the only places with fragments of farum azula, and people question it now because it was moved further away

@@Tulip_bip Yeah, it makes a lot more story and world sense there in the center. But from a game design and player guidance standpoint, I understand moving it away. It's not so much to make it a big reveal or surprise and more that the open world can already be a bit overwhelming. They worked really hard to guide players in certain directions visually. Farum Azula would always be a distraction from that if it was in the center.

And given the distance Farum Azula is from anywhere you could possibly see it on the mainland, it seems unlikely this is how detailed you would generate it. You might be right, maybe they just didn't care about resources at that point, but it just seems unlikely with the way they have done all of their previous games.

@@Kasaaz if there's one thing I've learned about From from Zulie - they make models first, optimize never. The amount of geometry we can never see in game but exists on enemies, items and landscapes in those games is plain stupid, and this is no exception.

4:38 When any model is made in 3d animation, they always make varying complexities of said model, usually 4 or 5 with increasing levels of detail, exactly for that purpose you stated. Different models are loaded at different distances to the player/camera, and the best ones are used for cutscenes and closeups and such. So this low poly model was already a thing, and gets used for very far off shots. Its no biggie to keep faram azula where it is and only load the 5 pixel model, even if no ones gonna be able to see it

4:33 I think if Lenny had quit and reloaded the game at this point, it would have triggered the full-poly model of Farum Azula to load, with collision and everything, meaning you could kill Maliketh and go straight to the Ashen Capital from the very start. Throughout the history of Fromsoft games, lots of out-of-bounds glitches require the player to quit and reload at certain points to force the game to properly load areas (since you aren't walking through the intended load triggers). This is obviously a mod, but my guess is that it would work the same as just one big out-of-bounds glitch 😅

To answer your question on why its so accurate to the actual game: What you're seeing is the same map thats being used for when you're actually there, only the collisions, objects (like the fountain thing in raya lucaria) and NPCs aren't loaded in, and the polygon count of the textures is heavily reduced to save on processing. So its not like these textures were seperately designed for you to see them from super far away, its more like they were algorithmically downscaled by the game itself.

Instead of infinite flight, it draws from stamina. The default ground movement is thruster skating, while crouching is walking. Dodges are boosts. The weapons available are the main guns, saline missiles, and backup laser blades. Ammo costs FP, but blades only cost stamina.

The point of the low resolution versions of places is multifold: 1) Locations are intended to be seen from a distance. 2) Locations use them as part of the LOD system. 3) When your camera isn't facing the same direction as those things it switches to the low resolution versions to save resources.

i think they just “save as copy” when they finished sculpting the general look of raya lucaria and farum azula, then used that duplicate as the in-world location to trick you into thinking that they’re actually there, while also saving render time due to having way less assets on those models. i think this way it’s faster cus the devs were using something they already made instead of starting a new file and try to imitate raya lucaria and farum azula again

@ZeroLenny Game Dev 101 nerd moment here: - Game engines are developed such that when levels are loaded into memory, they actually hold a "lightweight/proxy/reduced/simplified" representation of *all* objects in the level (low poly 3D models, lower resolution textures etc. etc.) - essentially to able to render the whole "world" for "realism" - Only the assets/objects in the proximity of the player are actually fully loaded - reference the grid map for Elden Ring (effectively it may load in 4/5/6 cells in the vicinity of the player) - Raya Lucaria/Faram Azula are essentially separate levels that need to be loaded into memory through a certain trigger/input (the player entering said zones/levels) - their load event never gets triggered when you're flying around them in the over world If you're really interested more about this, check out Unreal Engine level streaming.

In game design there is a thing called LOD which means level of details. For example an Object , lets say a castle can have multyple LODs When you are upclose the game loads the highest quality textures and models that it has for obvious reasons, the more you move away from your target the game unloads the high quality LODs and loads the low rez ones, since most of the times you can't physically touch the low rez ones they tend to not have colision for the system to use less resources . Now as to why the game shows you low rez LODs instead of the high res ones , If I had to guess its because the mod doesn't move the player model but just makes it invisible akin to a camera mod , so the games assumes the players stays afk in the same place when in reality you fly around.

Most LoDs in games tend to be literally copied assets which have had segments given reduced poly-counts and texture size, especially in open world games. Very rarely will you have LoDs made from scratch unless you require forced perspective due to engine limitations. Souls games do this a lot, especially locations like the Dukes Archives and Firelink Shrine. At the most extreme end, they'll just screenshot the model and use a png of it as a background asset, which Souls 2 does mainly with locations seen in Majula.
