I’m imagining an ore nest, surrounded on all sides, flamethrowers and lasers raining down pitiless death and destruction upon an unceasing procession of doomed biters. For them, it was their fate sealed. For Michael, it was just a Tuesday.

95 pipes placed correctly will completely block a nest from spawning. You can remove one of the pipes and the biter will spawn in that spot. You can put a belt in that spot and a gun within range so that it is immediately killed on the belt. I tried with walls at first but pipes seem cheaper to acquire.

As someone who has played this mod to completion: With maximally efficient play maybe turrets can work, but any mistake/loss of resources is brutal. The mod is really designed for you to punch/maybe grenade your way to flamethrowers. After that, you work toward nuclear to support laser turrets. You also need to rush trains, because nests will eventually stop attacking when you aren't near them. You'll need to continuously ride around in a train to keep automated flow of resources going. This is the biggest thing that makes regular turrets non-viable. With the taxes, you need multiple iron bases to support each coal/copper base, and since they'll randomly shut down you inevitably wind up losing stuff and being better off hand-farming until flamethrowers.

i think "correct" way to scale would be to eliminate first nests almost entirely and left like 2-3 spawners surrounded by walls, it would give much more stable and less initial investment heavy setup

IDK maybe, but you require pretty much an ideal set of bunched up starter nests or you would need an even larger/more spread out setup than this one

I did some testing, you can push back the flamethrowers so they only fire when the biters are at the wall, and use a radar as the lure.

this would actually be a very interesting mod with a little more work. Make each type of biters a bit unique, give them special resistances and weaknesses. maybe take a page out of rampant factions even. Expand the weapons tech tree to include stuff like maybe sulfuric acid hoses for uranium biters to preserve some of the tech tree, pumpjacks could be replaced by a specific kind of weapon that works best against oil biters for example. Make rocks more like the vulcanus rocks so early game ore isnt just punching biters forever. And thats just stuff you can do in vanilla, I bet you could do some really interesting things in space age by riffing off the biter cultivation tech to add proper automation to the game.

one thing i thought for this would be combining it with mods that increase productivity of ore refining. so you get more from each ore. just a matter of having it low enough to be reachable and simple enough to not kill the production.

Can you fill the space in front of the walls with rails? Flamethrowers don't damage those, and biters ignore them. The items are forced to spawn in a space not occupied by rails, so there would be less startup time.

That is actually a great idea for a flamethrower setup, they're cheap enough to make it worthwhile, I think. Let's see, 1 rail blocks a 2x2 tile area are and costs 2,75 iron + 0,5 stone, so less than 1 ore per blocked tile. If we take belts as a benchmark, 1 rail piece blocks about 32 pieces of ore for the cost of just 3,25 ore!

It might be better to establish even smaller "ore miners" at the start by culling the starting patches and since they are close together you wont have to run around like a headless chicken

Biter evolution by time is negligible on default settings. Unless you are doing almost nothing, your pollution will be the bulk of the evolution. Pollution generated anywhere immediately applies to evolution regardless whether it reaches any biters.

@@TheReaverOfDarkness In a normal run yes, in this type of run your pollution production is significantly reduced, and as it took over 4 hrs to get a few hundred plates/min, time will be a much more significant factor for evolution. Especially with reaching the 20% mark where medium biters exist.

You should do a vanilla low resource settings (everything at somewhere between 17% and 50%) if that's to easy combine it with death world, the massively reduced amount of regular resources available would force you to expand and kill the biters much earlier then normal. Also as far as I know nobody on youtube has tried lowering resource amount as a challenge yet.

I played this in a mass multiplayer setting with the speedrunner community a few years ago. We did the heavy armor + grenade grind all the way up to laser turrets in that game. Then with laser turrets we started proper automation. I can't recall if that playthrough managed to launch a rocket.

regarding flamethrower experiment at 1:35:00, you can probably use dragon teeth setup with long 'mouth': u-like wall, a flamethrower/whatever inside mouth to aggro biters ("outside" the wall, so biters don't damage the structure), sides are more damagedealers + conveyors to remove the expanding ore from the ground. this way it both allows flamethrowers to be more efficient (biters go over the same burning path) and to remove ore from the ground 'early' instead of waiting for 15k on the ground

This is my favorite playthrough you ever did! I really enjoyed the challenge, and unlike your other playthroughs, it felt actually like this one can actually fail. It was very exciting, with a lot of improvisation. I did not really mind it to be a little slower :)

I hate being that guy that comments on videos saying things like "actually" But your flame thrower test. You want their max attack range close to the walls, so that the area overflow starts closer to the walls. To ensure the area overflow also begins working better if you don't want to risk breaches and be more efficient you can build a flame thrower box AROUND the nest. Items can (on ground) only appear on tiles which items can be placed, sounds like saying blue is blue I know. But you can use walls to force the dropped items to appear where you want. Start with the crude oil side asap. Unbarrel it, pump it everywhere. Have a few storage tanks for surge or breaks in the pipeline. Once your oil income is high then you can move to iron, coal, copper, stone then uranium. I do like lasers, but flame throwers are godlike in factorio, even in things like space exploration. And having tested this myself. A reasonable sized nest, like the one you discovered early. Can support a fairly large expansion on your side defence wise. Especially if you try have all 4 sides of the nest walled in, flame thrower'd then immediately unbarreled, you will need to prime it with grenade oil first. Poison capsules also work great at taking out the nasties. What worked well for me was huge wall with flame throwers firing close to the wall, once income was good I then started moving the flame throwers closer to the wall and their base, stopped just before the flame throwers got within attack range of the nests, obviously walls infront atleast 3 deep. I left 3 lines of flamer defence from my box around them shrinking, but that is entirely optional, early on do have the occasional flamer pointed 90 degrees (facing your turrets) to the nest incase of breaches. Flamers also work amazing on evolved biters, whereas yellow ammo becomes useless basically at mediums, even red ammo becomes pretty weak fast (played a lot of death worlds and the likes, I have tried, and sometimes succeeded, in doing a few of doshdoshington challenges). Also the area overflow can be insane, found that out on a modded space exploration playthrough where my friend demanded 10k stack sizes....I accidently dropped a full inventory of things on the ground when I disabled said mod.... was very mesmerising to look at, much less so to clean up.

The tradeoff of putting the wall further away is more biter damage to the wall before they get toasted. Also, if spitters can attack the wall from beyond the flamers range, the will sometimes do so

funny playthrought if you wanna play another "no ore patches" run try the mod black market, its fun on a small map (250x250) without ores. you need to produce materials and sell them but the prices change when you sold too much. its certainly something different didn't knew your channel before nice videos!

I know how in this iteration it might be straight masochism. I feel like once you can can Laser turrets this playthrough will get a lot more tolerable. It would be fun to see your outposts with laser turrets everywhere in the map with trains connecting everything. This concept just seems so fun (as an idea).

When I first heard the concept, I actually thought that killing a spawner would create a small minable iron patch instead of just dropping raw iron. I think that would have made the concept work better... maybe?

this was interesting to watch. if the iron farm was twice as long(wide) you would have twice the furnaces for the same amount of ore and more dps to protect the belts. the flamers might work if they were facing sideways as they would not over/under shoot as far from collection. so the ore would be concentrated closer to the walll. with expansion you could completely enclose the nests allowing for a massive solar array and lasers. a fun problem to solve but maybe not fun to play for long. spitters would have to be turned off, safe starting area and 50 grenades at start would be a way to improve the mod.

I like this idea but the rates need to be re-balanced. Increase the amount of ore from each biter, and make larger biters drop more ore. These current terrible rates with regular gun turrets should only kick in at large biters imo, making that the cutoff point where you really need better weapons.

some ideas for polish in this mod: remove time evolution replace miners with thumpers. They can be placed anywhere, don't do anything, and produce as much pollution as miners replace ores with meat/chitin (it's just new sprites and flavortext) and the weird oil barrel mechanic with basic centrifuges that are basically just pumpjacks but require meat input make biters fully ignore (instead of just mostly ignore) belts make evolution remain net-positive? maybe there is a reason not to but it seems like a fun-killer to me

If killing worms triggers evolution thats not good but if they don't then could use them for a burst of resources. Another thought is that between 20-25 evo you can kill the normal biter nests as the spitter nests can only make smol biters

Add an item pickup mod to fix the issue with flamers, or, if you don't want that, nice the walls closer to the bitter so you leave less ore on the ground. Also at the void chest so you can void items as a safety to not die to ups issues

You can optimize the flamethrower setup a lot, to have less ore lying on the ground. Use long-handed inserters instead of the first line of belts - this already removes 4 tiles of buffer. And move the flamethrowers a few tiles back. This might make it manageable. You can also spill some chests full of items on the ground to make it start sooner. But iron ore is probably the cheapest item anyway so that may be useless. Copper cables?

Dude, i built 6 turrets and two belts, one up, one down. Ammo and ores.(with several lanes as "pick up") As long as the turrets were fed they all died on the belts. Took 1/100th of the time of this mad starting setup xD

a mine launcher tower would be cool, load it up with mines and it can shoot a grid of mines in different configurations, automatically. would need to be maybe slow-firing so it isnt as effective on an active assault, but is good for defense to lay mines during downtime of waves

Just looked through the mods code. In the settings you can put a multiplier depending on the size of the biters. That would help balancing the game

it seems like for the flamethrower turrets, you might try adding a mod that makes bots fireproof and just have a separate roboport network around each biter base just for gathering the items? if you eliminate specifically the spitter spawners and the worms they won't even get shot at

I'd say laser are definitely your best best. Flamethrowers may be quicker to set up on the short-term but have quite a few flaws, not the last of which is that you essentially need to babysit a single place for more than an hour just to get resource saturation going. And even after saturation, at least 3/4ths of the resources dropped will end up in directions away from your wall so the return on investment is not only very slow but also abysmal. It's also not really scaleable. A flamethrower base could work in front of an oil patch but how many patches can you set up before you simply run into a deficit? Your chosen turret needs to help you get all the other resources too if you want to make any reasonable progress. Laser has an instant return on set-up with a high efficiency, is easy to set up and can be put anywhere. All you need is some empty gun turrets close to the nests to trigger them into laser range. It's not really a contest between the two.

At the beginning phase, you could have just stored all your stuff in a wooden chest and let the biters kill you for 10 free amo. It's a bit of a hack and honestly, I'm not even sure if it would be faster than your fish strategy. Edit: just got to 1:13:04 so I guess that wouldn't have worked.

if i was to play this mod, i would make belts immune to fire damage, or just plain indistructable, it would make this much more viable and fun to play, you could claim the oil biters to fuel the flamethrowers, and i would clear nests early, if you have only one nest it spawns only 1 biter maybe more later but you could just sit there afk with melee and not even eat fish. one or 2 turrets would work for one nest. slow resources, but it would be a good start with almost no risk, before moving to bigger nest clusters to increase production.

You should definitely run this, but rebalance it so the loot scales with biter HP and maybe with turret efficiency to make the late-game less easy since turrets become cheaper to run. I would recommend everyone to try the mod, it's a fun break from the normal modded factorio, but you have to touch the balance settings to have fun with it.

Gleba requires collecting pentapod eggs, but once you have some, you don't need to keep killing for more. _That said,_ there _is_ a part of Space Age that isn't too far off from this mod: _asteroids!_ Pay 2.384 metallic asteroid chunks worth 59.6 iron to make 149 bullets to destroy a medium metallic asteroid, and collect 9 metallic asteroid chunks worth 225 iron to make 562.5 bullets. Much better return on investment than iron biters, and unlike iron biters, big asteroids are worth 3 times as much iron, and huges 9 times as much.

So we gonna see a rerun of this in the future? I mean, the mod has settings to adjust the resource drops of larger sizes, and that could be an interesting way to run a crazy factorio challenge. Perhaps with some mods that make, say, grenades primable by some form of inserter that throws things. If only such a mod existed... :D

there was a commenter asking if this was compatible with Py. Honestly as someone who voutches for Py i would not even wish a Py bitter mod onto my worst enemy. Py is also almost fundamentally made to played without bitters to begin with.

i feel like mod needs to up its economy like 2x at least. Else there is a colectors turrets in one of the angels mods that collects alien artifacts from bitters that are downed. Could be an interesting idea if one can mod it to collect resources as well

1:33:00 you can already clearly see Iron Ore on the ground inside your walls at the top of your base. Their is a max range for intentional player dropping, but if you remove power armor and you inventory overflows I don't believe it has a max range, maybe render distance? but I've seen it cover an entire chunk before....oops. 1:37:50 you could reduce the start up time by dropping stone out there...but still very ruff. how do you feed the flamethrowers though?

I think since this is all about killing biters you should allow yourself to use bobs warfare or other weapon overhaul mods to kill them more creatively, I think it would just be more fun to try different setups with different modded weapons

I feel like this mod could be a little more interesting if you were given some laser turrets and solar panels at the start. of course the pain of the start and trying to balance the income vs expense might be the point of the mod.

Makes me wonder how this world fare in Warptorio, warps are a plus becaue they reset evolution, futhermore the warp technologies make the turret way more resource efficient. It'd improve the economic balance, at least it'd be playable. Also warp chests, would make for a nice adventure at least.

I am surprised you used belts at all before your walls. If you drop items on top of other items they spill to nearby tiles. You can just wait till iron spills next to your walls and then long insterters can pick it up. Edit: I reached moment in video where he figured it out and now I feel smart.

After playing with this mod, I noticed an issue. If you are some chunks (like 7) away from the biters they start to freeze. Once you go close, they awake and the nest also spawns new ones. So, you can't gather ressources if they are distributed over a larger area - which is mostly the case. That's really stupid, it seems there is no way to increase this range.

This only happened to me once. I think it helps if you completely surround the nests with turrets just barely out of range of the nests. This basically guarantees that new nest spawns keep happening in the turrets range, triggering the turret and accordingly nearby biters.

I think the only way I could play such a mod is if I had an option to turn off all biter bodies upon their death. They clutter too much as is and you can't see what is going on.
