Can you do this mode with colm? He has such low max attack plus sword lock. I wonder if you would just be banking on assassinate procking with a bunch of iron swords. Also it would be cool to see if it's even possible to do an archer run. You would have to upgrade to ranger so you can use swords for the protecting the queen chapter tho

I'm nearly a year late to this video huh? Well Mr. KMVN, I definitely don't disagree that Knoll kinda sucks ass. I for some (stupid) reason have a soft spot for him because I think I used him on my 1st ever fe8 run, because I was told he's only one of 2 dark magic choices and I like using all weapon types... AND I thought it was sick how a druid can now use anima as opposed to fe6-7 druids. But I'm also a serial "terribly-built for immediate use" character user, like freaking Nino from fe7. I love a character that falls solidly into a niche once you've put in the proper effort. But still even then, Ewan makes a better druid lmao

I would say that in future runs it’s fine to use other characters to grab the items in the desert, as long as all non-boss (moving) enemies are dead. At that point, it’s just a time waster, it doesn’t make it any harder, just more tedious.

It seems like most of Knoll's issues are caused by dark tomes being awful. His Luck is probably the biggest issue thats purely his own fault. Really appreciate you doing this! I'm a dirty Knoll lover, so this was very fun to finally see come to fruition.

I'd say it's mostly his con being bad. Literally dark tomes would work fine for him if his con was closer to Moulders. They intentionally wanted him to be near parody levels of bad with God awful bulk, god awful avoid, gets crit often and gets slowed down nearly always.

@@coldeed Afaik his Con is the second highest of the unpromoted magic users in Sacred Stones, only behind Saleh by a single point and Moulder by 2. So when promoted his Con is = to Saleh's. Using Moulder as a baseline for this doesn't make sense. His Con is abnormally high for a priest, which actually has the drawback of letting fewer units rescue him. In a game that also has Lute with a whopping 3 Con at base, its hard to claim Knoll has "bad" Con. Its just not sufficient for dark tomes, which comes back around to my original point.

Knoll starts in negative thresholds, and has the same issues characters like lute and Natasha do with con. It really doesn't matter if the number is higher when it's not adequate con.

If you keep doing what you did here and use other characters to look for hidden items in the desert, then you could also go back and subtract the time you spent hitting "wait" on the runs you already did. That way you could remove the tedium in the future while still preserving the time comparison between runs. Love the series! FE8 was my first and favorite game so I can't wait for the next episode of this great series.

A random idea for a run I had... less for an actual rank run and more for fun like the Myrrh run would be to give a Bishop access to dark tomes and see how that goes. Give Glepnir a chance to actually do boosted damage. It IS technically possible with glitches after all. You can give any unit access to dark magic by giving them stone from enemy gorgons. As for a more Serious run though I want see Ewan now... Make him a druid And watch him wreck shop... if he can survive long enough. And thank you Scott

Honestly the only thing that might be a problem for Ewan is if you can even get a flux tome for him quick enough. Not sure when exactly you can get one for the first time. I do think Shaman to druid would be the best bet for him though. I will say I am not 100% sure if Slayer would actually work with a dark tome... Never actually been able to try it before. I only thought about it this last time I was playing and setting it up in a regular game can be quite a pain.

The demon king targeted knoll and not the summon because the demon king has kill detection and will go for the unit it can kill. Every time I have fought demon king in a normal campaign, I use the summon to tank the return fire after one of my units attacks him initially. As long as none of those units are at risk of dying, he only attacks the the summon

I think the utility afforded by the extra movement is harder to quantify than just a # of turns, its hard to tell how often you would've died without it, or stuff like that as far as a strategy to keep mansel alive to grab the statbooster, you can actually have summons take rescued units even though they cant pick people up on their own, maybe something with that?

You're right about that, there is definitely more than just saving turns to the boots. The one problem with that strategy is that it may only save us a turn or two because the Phantoms work like flying units, they don't get slowed by terrain but also don't get the bonuses the throne would provide to help survivability, but thanks for the suggestion.

Just curious as you mentioned the desert treasures, why not not count turns where the only thing happening is spamming end turn for items and no enemies are moving/combat is happening to your solo run unit of choice. That way everyone can obtain these items and not just waste 50 turns for possibility no gain?

Interesting thing to note about Summoners in FF8 (All 2 of them...): While the stats of the Phantoms are based on the Summoner's level, the equipment is based on which character did the summoning. When Ewan summons a Phantom it spawns with an Iron Axe, Steel Axe, or Handaxe. When Knoll summons a Phantom it spawns with a Killer Axe, Devil Axe, or Tomahawk.

If you want to torture yourself, you should do Neimi next, I've been trying to do Neimi solo in a normal copy of the game (not modifying the lord, I just started soloing with her on chapter 3) and I think it's impossible to get the Orion's Bolt on chapter 6, which means you'll be bow-locked and unpromoted until chapter 15 unless you manage to make it work (to be fair, I did refrain from using other units as meatshields to divert the enemies' attention, which might allow you to beat chapter 6 fast enough)

The reason the Demon King went for Knoll anyway is because either one was a option to be attacked due to being able to be defeated. If Knoll had about 40HP then the Phantom would have been the target.

@@kratosmvn_ As far as I know the AI has a few quirks. 1. Take no counter attack if at all possible. 2. If it know it can see a kill with several attacks it will use as many as it feels it needs to. 3. If there are several targets that can die, it will pick at random. 4. If there is no weapon equipped it will go for them because there will never be a counter attack. Given these are solo runs but if you want to branch out and do a Ewan Summoner run as well these are some things to bare in mind.

You mention maybe revisiting the Ross run at some point and I wonder if you’d redo the Erika run as well since that was the very first one, and lowest ranked, maybe there’s things you’ve learned that could improve that one as well

I'll most likely revisit that one too, but I think she'll remain at the bottom, but do a lot better because one of the big issues for Eirika was the extra late promo hampering her abilities to do much until post Chapter 16.

My man, I love your videos, and the Knoll death counter shtick was HILARIOUS. But DUDE…your use of phantoms to “assist” knoll this run was abhorrent bro. Like the Gorgon chapter? Ch19? You had an eye and a gorgon with stone? Kill the eye first, so the gorgon will just stone the phantom and it wouldn’t die. So many instances like this lol. Loved the videos, but that was driving me crazy lol
