Can You Beat Gran Turismo 4 With Only Road-legal Cars?

Although the Gran Turismo series is known for its car variety and the ability to upgrade pretty much any car, how far in the game can you get using only cars which are road-legal?

Nicely done, congrats! Never dawned on me that the R390 GT1 road car gets even more downforce than the LMP's with a rear wing. Thanks for the shout-out as well, glad the guide helped out. The Impreza Spec C is hilariously good for sure, especially with full-powered NOS.

Thanks! Indeed, the guide helped massively in setting up the cars, especially with the R390. I was also massively surprised to see the "+30 front/rear downforce" logic work with the R390, since it already has adjustable downforce by default.

Haha, although I must say that even for me, the road-going R390 was a handful to drive (as depicted in the video)! I must also add that TeaKanji’s GT4 guide helped a lot with setting up my cars, so I’d highly recommend checking it out; it definitely made this challenge much more doable for me!

@@mrxbas The main reason why it was so easy because you did the qualifying lap before actual race. Now, try beat the World Championship WITHOUT Qualifying (start from the bottom) and you will see the difference because you will be pressured alot to finish the race in podium spot (Top 3 position). I already beat this with Pagani Zonda C12S '02 with 66 points (12 points ahead from Peugeot 905) 4 years ago and I have 2 times 4th position on Paris due lack of control and 4th on Super Speedway due lack of Power (non-turbo, what do you expect?). Overall, this was my biggest acheivement to finish with dealership car only (no-race version). As for Used Cars challenge, it will be nigh impossible to beat because you need non-turbo cars and better power to weight ratio (no more than 2x difference) and you will struggle alot on long-straight section if used NA cars and corner section if you used Turbo cars. The best point I can get is 45 points (20 points behind Peugeot 905) with NSX Type-R '92 (early 90's showroom) and 46 points with NSX Type S-Zero '97 (same early 90's showroom). I wanted to see if you can reach 1st place on World Championship after you experiment alot which car can meet your own criteria.

As others said, it's impressive how well this video is made. Great pacing, good mix of gameplay and narration, no padding, good commentary that isn't obnoxious or has unnecessary jokes, and specially, no unnecessary drama (for example, trying to build hype for the last races). I came here to see someone try and beat a challenge, and that's what I got. I really like this style of commented gameplay.

Yeah, that WRX and the Buick Special are two forces to be reckoned with, those two were my chariots of grace if I were to enter a challenging race. They are OP, you should try to cap the top speed at 240kph for the WRX, and see the level of disrespect that car can inflict on a short track. 😅

The WRX is so incredibly grippy and stable that it's overpowered for all but the World Championship. I think that setting the gearbox to 200-250 km/h will probably make the acceleration more broken than a fully-tuned Group B car...

True, it was either a slower car with slower opponents (e.g. by rerolling) or a faster car with faster opponents here. I can't deny that the latter option worked like a charm here (both in spectacle and challenge)!

Naturally, the Nissan "Totally-street-legal-race-car" that's barely any different from its actual race-car spec equivalent (post-tuning), wins the challenge of "no race cars". I'd say it's pretty eyeroll worthy, except NASCAR exists and is a much larger farce of a "street legal/stock car" race than anything in Gran Turismo. Still, credit where it is due; that's a legitimately good performance that ended much more closely than I was originally expecting. Most GT "challenges" amount to "buy rice-burner, rush to get race-car rice-burner as prize car, win championship by a 3+ minute lead across all heats." So at least it wasn't utterly predictable as most GT content has been so far.

It was either this or the Viper SRT-10. Since this car was so stupid that it was miles ahead of the _actual_ R390 GT1 race car, the choice was quickly made. (I did address this criticism in my next challenge run, though.)

Thanks! The car was severely underpowered in that race (as it was still very early in the playthrough), and I always try to race the AI as cleanly as possible so I had a couple of really nice overtakes (also on the AI’s side, funnily enough).

In terms of controllers, I use a standard XBOX One controller (as I'm really used to it now from playing Forza Motorsport/Horizon). And for emulation, I use PCSX2. The nostalgia is definitely a reason why I still play this game so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video as well!

Also to completing the game with used cars I mean it is *technically* definitely possible but certainly not easily or quickly obtainable; it's possible to get an all black version of some of the LM cars from the used dealer but they only appear on week 100. I checked the wiki for the R390 Road car and it does not appear in the used dealer

The Used Car Only event is actually doable with a used road car too, provided you’re very lucky with your car roster for the GTWC (although you must skip the Sports Truck event, but I’d think that’s fair due to the restrictions that event has)

Amazing video man! You definitely have to make more challenge videos like this, especially for gran turismo games. I do have one challenge that DustinEden mentioned in a previous video that I actually tried a few years ago, which is seeing how much of GT3 can you beat without spending any money. While I never finished this challenge (completed about 40% of the campaign and golded all but super liscense) and found out its impossible to beat the entire game, theres shockingly only a few cups that are impossible...but it is definitely a major time sink.... I would love to see some other mad man try to take on the challenge themselves.

I'm not surprised you tried the R390 road car in the world championship. That's one of the few road cars in the game that could legitimately stand a chance against prototypes in this game because of how much downforce you can give it. Haven't tried it in the World Championship but I did have a good time running one in the Fuji 1000 km.

I always found it insane how we went from the artifacts in the graphics of GT3 (my first time playing a racing game) to GT4. Then 5 came out on PS3/XB360 and I couldn’t put it down. Skipped school a few times when it came out, and I got it for Christmas the year it came out!

Great Video! Gt4 was my Favourite Game, right behind GT2. I also make my own Challenges in GT2, how weak a Car can be, to win 591 HP Race. Love those Challenges, keep up! 😁

Clicking on this video I expected this to be cleared without upgrades aswell. But I dont actually have any idea about Gran Turismo, so I cannot tell if that is even possible. Anyway, still great video, very nicely paced, it didnt end up on the second monitor for sidewatching 😁

Thanks! It’s possible to do alone, but probably not in combination with road-legal cars as there’s (to my knowledge) no car in the game that can keep up with the LMPs and GT1s of the World Championship.

Haha, I had to try my hardest to not make this video over an hour long (since I really didn’t want to narrate for so long as well) so I’m glad it worked out the way it did! I did see that everyone is now busy with the randomizer challenge, so I’m waiting to try that out for myself too!

Challenge runs definitely do make replays of these games more fun. A few months back I started a playthrough of Gran Turismo 2 using only cars from before 1990, and although I haven't quite finished it yet, it forced me to step outside my comfort zone and try cars I'd never given the light of day before. Maybe something similar would work in Gran Turismo 4?

I think it will work well in GT4 thanks to the large amount of pre-1990 cars in the game (especially Japanese ones like the R32 and old Silvias).

Fantastic video my friend and That elcap race brough back a memory of one of my favourite gaming moments ive every had. GT3 Laguna seca endurance race Me in the toyota GT1 Car and the lead AI in the team oreca viper (all other AI were just traffic) I had set my tyres quite hard to line up minimal pit stops, the AI had quite soft. The lead viper was smashing me every lap, gaining over 10 seconds by the time it needed to pit however those pitstops were very frequent. Half way through the race i noticed my last pit would line up with the last few laps so i needed to push my pits later so cut the last pit but still leave myself with half decent tyres for the last few laps. Having driven concervatively to preserve my tyres in the last quater I made it to the end of the race, my last lap was very slippery to say the least and i was fighting for grip. I turn the last corner to look in my mirror to see the viper pounce out around the last corner behind me. I finished the race only 1 second ahead, after all the racing and pitstop timing, changing lead countless times throughout the race, only 1 second in it Love these games, loved the video, thank you

Thanks! That’s why I love the longer races in GT4 so much, it suddenly becomes much more of a tactical game of pitstops and tyre strategies once you are forced to make at least one pitstop, especially when the other cars have different levels of tyre degradation.

Honestly, I went into the GT World Championship with only the softest tires. I didn't care about the extra pit stops, I could run on practically qualification pace throughout the races. Yes, I used to fall behind after the first pit stop, but it was just for 1 or two seconds, thanks to the extra pace advantage in the first stint. And being the AI not very aggressive, overtakes are easily done. It's a very aggressive strategy worth trying.
