There's a very good reason why Hawke doesn't submerge his submarines in this map. If he did, it would be very difficult to route Hawke as you can easily lose sight of his submarines and the game would take much much longer to complete. The developers knew this and made sure to change the AI so that Hawke wouldn't be able to submerge.

I mean, far I know, the AI already submerges Submarines for only 1 turn, in their Submerged turn, they move and rise inmediately, even if that puts them in Range of things (because the AI seems to not care if they are in range of Indirect combat or strong counters. It doesn´t make much sense to made an AI exclusive for a battle like this when the original programing works just fine.

From what I can remember, the AI Pattern of Submarines is that, they sink for 1 turn and for the remainder of it's turn and then rises back the next turn, then submerging the turn-after.

If they just recycled the AI from Advance Wars, they wouldn't need to do that since it was dumb as rocks and would surface their submarines at random, often while adjacent to shoals or in port.

I think it might be more of a coding decision to compensate for the fact the AI doesn't have access to APCs to refuel the subs. Unless maybe the AI thinks its pointless to submerge them when there's no FoW and so many cruisers on the field anyway.

In a perfect world this mission would be unbeatable only with boats. There are no ranged anti air naval unit in AW2, and cruisers can't reach airports inland, so Hawk would always be able to build new units in safety. But that's not accounting for how stupid the AI is.

Hey Mangs, how about doing a pvp with the campaign maps? Would it be possible? I've seen some PvP for the Fire Emblem campaign, even if it's not possible for Advance Wars, would it be possible to make those on War Room or in Advance Wars by Web?

I think a fun follow up would be to rebuild this map in Duel Strike and then maybe even in Days of Ruin, just because of the big differences in naval combat in those two games, mainly the fact that cruisers can fire on ships and their AA gun is way stronger in later games. In Days of Ruin, Battleships being able to move and fire also makes Naval combat more dynamic too, also Gunboat spam.

The hardest part about doing the sturm challenge would be doing the campaign over to get the right COs. Considering Sturm will have hold over Andy's bases, I wonder if grit would actually be really good for dealing with him. Kanbei would also be good because Kanbei.

Usually Max is the best CO in AW1, and Kanbei in AW1 is more like fair and less like OP(+20/+20 instead of +30/+30). Though you can still reach 50% defense on cities. He was talking about Sturm finale in AW, right?

@@malick9549 You can have Max and Kanbei at the same time, and I definitely think Kanbei is better than eagle for this mission with how much anti air sturm has and Kanbei having super strong predeployed troops. For the west side of the map, given the andyless challenge, you could either have grit or max and either would work fine.

The ai has to be reacting to your unit comp. After filling with cruisers they limited air production and didn't build more fighters. Once you had a battleship they got subs. BCopters might have a weird priority to reflect their uniqueness. Maybe it's a check on what units can do what % dmg to your existing units?

I mean battlecopters are quite effective against naval units. If he kept spamming them they could trade very effectively against the cruisers. The weird choice was the fighters.

@@Nirual86 Despite the psychological trauma of seeing your 18K unit halved by a 9K unit at 2:15, copters are not really cost effective vs cruisers. If cruiser first strikes, copter is dead and that's 9K in favor of cruiser. If copter first strikes, it's 55% damage to cruiser (9K worth) and about 50% retaliation damage to copter (4.5K) that's 4.5K in favor of copter. It's true that the maneuverability of the copter is gonna get them more first strikes, but the copter still has a tall mountain to climb to break even with the cruiser let alone be considered cost effective. (None of this matters on a balanced map though, since the copter can fight on land and the cruiser can't which makes the copter infinitely more valuable) But still, it bothers me to see Mangs confidently trashing cruisers for the wrong reasons when 8:15 clearly shows that he has not done his homework lol

The VS AI had some RNG built into it, I assume the AI written for the missions have some randomness too.

I know in Dual Strike that the AI reacts to enemy units, like if you build a Recon or AA then they build a Tank, if you build a Transport Copter they build an AA, if you build a Battleship then eventually they'll build a Sub, and so on. Not sure about AW2.

Maybe you could make a sub series called “Anything You can Do, I can do Better” where you have to beat Certain specialized COs using only their specialty unit and Infantry (Direct Units for Max, Indirects for Grit, Naval Units for Drake, Tanks for Jess, and so forth)

I still don't get why it took until Dual Strike for Cruisers to be able to attack other naval units, I really wish they had implemented that in AW1 and AW2. Being able to shoot at Battleships and other Cruisers gives a Cruiser so much extra versatility and makes naval combat much less of an all-or-nothing thing, it lets chip damage happen over time.

I never knew this was a challenge. This is just how I play this map. Although, if you shoot down the B-Copter right off the bat - and always attack aggressively - Hawke will prioritize replacing air units (yes, at THAT airport) and never build naval, making non-cruisers unnecessary.

AI Hawke will pop Black Wave if he starts his turn or ends an attack with almost no power charge in excess of his COP. If he gets a half-star towards Black Storm, he'll hold for that. This makes the AI exploitable, especially on Sea Fortress, because you manipulate your damage so that he starts a turn with a 50% star and ends with 98% of his SCOP, which means for your entire turn the damage doesn't charge his meter.

Battle Copters are bad in DoR, you can just go Duster and murder them without retailation.

To be honest, I think they went too far. I agree naval units in AW and AW2 were too weak and they should have been made better. But I think a battlecoptor should at least do 30% if it gets the first strike, since battlecoptors are supposed to be descent mobile units with a bit of a glass cannon effect (recons and mechs can actually do quite a bit of damage if they end up with the first strike, even though he mechs use their machine guns which normally is just slightly better than infantry).

@@alex_zetsu I think one of the main reasons is that you can one shot cruisers with air units. Maybe get an "anti-air" plating (like the antitank vs tanks) that reduces the damage of bombers, so you need at least two to sink one.

Really wish there were more units and they were cheaper so naval combat could be an interesting thing. The battleship DS/Wii game is like Advance Wars with naval units (but you can't spawn unlimited ships while the cpu can) but the biggest flaw is that it seems to only have campaign mode so you can't play with a friend for instance.

No. You can lose any players in the final battle. You just get a message saying "The Orange Star army has been defeated". You only get a Game Over once all three players have lost.

Income Sapping is very effective and the CPU doesn't even notice you're doing it. my brother used this to defeat HYPER Kanbei (he used cheats to make Kanbei pop Samurai Spirit every turn) his units being invincible doesn't matter when he cannot afford them. Edit: yeah, why don't you try fighting COs with Infinite SCOP power and see if you win, like Eagle, Kanbei, Andy. (Sensei might as well be impossible).
