FUN FACT: you can actually get The Masque Of Clavicus Vile very early in your playthrough, before the game even gives you the option to officially begin the quest. You simply need to kill Umbra, the person possessed by the sword they wield, located somewhere on the eastern quarter of the imperial city road surrounding the bigass lake. The reason you aren't allowed to start the quest until level... 10, I think, is because Umbra will kick your ass. Edit, yeah, as the vid says, lvl 20 is lowballing how tough Umbra can be 1v1. Best strategy is to find a spot up high where they can't reach you and spam ranged, quelaag cheese style. Once you obtain the sword Umbra, you may either keep it as the single most powerful weapon in the base game bar glitches, or speak to Clavicus Viles' shrine with it in your inventory. He will immediately congratulate you on slaying his previous... champion, and ask for Umbra's immediate return to him in exchange for the Masque. The Masque is absolutely not worth it, outside of sacrificing to keep Azura's Star, which happens to be the single item in the game that can feed Umbra's magic charge demands, or a mercantile run. Congrats, you played yourself.

Umbra is good even if you make a better custom sword, because it's a quest item and therefore weightless. Fantastic backup weapon all game long. If you do the quest and keep the sword, it gains weight. So never do the quest.

So... If you going to do some run, including using enchanted clothes - do not throw out your shackles. It's single clothing item for hands (except of few DLC items easy, but not so easy to obtain). Also keep in mind (self written joke) for some weird reason, clothing, with 0 armor rating, increasing your light armor skill (yeah-yeah, Morrowind "unarmoured" skill replacement in script, blah-blah-blah)

Actually there is a no XP run of Oblivion on "Just Background Noise" channel, so it should be possible by leveling Mercantile only 🤓 ...it sure is like a torture, but it is possible

i'll have to check it out but i'm almost convinced it would have to be a mod, the the starting dungeon without armor, heals, and running (to avoid heavy/light, restoration, and athletics) as well as sancor tor, or..any of the mandatory dungeons. I just can't fathom how you would _live_ through them without leveling

@@AaronCorr Mysterium Xarxes doesn't give a level in anything, but he had to read the Mythic Dawn Commentaries volumes one through four, gaining a level in Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion and Mysticism in that order. Very good video and well worth mentioning here, just recently re-watched it myself. If one were to try that no-XP run but with Mercantile allowed, it would certainly make acquiring scrolls, staffs and potions easier, and thus allow for a fair bit more ease in a lot of encounters. Just need to make sure to not level up, or the scaling enemies will ruin your everything...

Fun fact, you know why it is very good she can just tell you? Because when the game was translated into German, they just literally translated the books, so you can't solve the riddle by yourself

So for future reference when selling items you can press the left and right buttons (L1 and R1 on PlayStation ) to immediately go either to the maximum amount to sell or the minimum amount to sell makes doing the selling interactions slightly faster and easier still takes forever to level the skill but any little bit helps right

I found the fastest way to level mercantile is to get a stack of two to five of everything that weighs under a pound/unit/whatever is used to measure weight in the Elder Scrolls series. Just start at the top and click your way down to sell each item without having to go into the slider screen, then once you’re finished swap back to the purchase menu and do the same to get it all back

Alchemy levels up in no time where you get 30 to 40 and even 50 gold per bottle quicly. Also stealing stuff and selling to a Thieves Guild fence or the owner of the Inn of Ill Omen (only merch that accepts stolen goods) makes you tons of gold in no time. Also when you steal you steal the food too that gives you more free alchemy ingredients. Make that food into potions and it is "laundered" into a new item any merch will accept.

So I've done a Buying Stuff Only Run and its such a mess. The Shops update nearly ten levels behind the drop tables, so leveling is the single worst thing you can do because of how bad your equipment gets. Can you beat Oblivion as an alchemist? You can only use unarmed or a dagger which MUST be covered in poisons you make. You cannot wear armor and must make your own potions. Archery also allowed but again must have poison. Also you can't cast spells and can't sell loot, only potions you make. Also the razor? Not allowed.

So it might help if the run doesn't officially start until you leave the sewers so every run isn't technically DOA, plus doing that you could have a save just before you exit so you can change your class/star sign/etc and use the save for future runs

Well, the rich get richer by taking everything from everyone else, so... I once got a character to max level with efficient levelling and I think the only skill that took longer than mercantile was athletics, running everywhere even as a major skill, it was just super slow. If you do this sort of thing again, then it might help to do the Sheogorath shrine quest, safest one for low level characters.

Don't worry about quest keys or tutorial requirements unless it's funny to go around them, imo. But unless you're going all in on nonsense glitches that are fun to watch to skip stuff like that, I'd rather you just enjoy yourself and maybe show a tally on the screen when you "break" the rules if you want to mention it. I enjoy the lengths ymfah goes to avoid "going up a ladder" or "picking up the key in front of DS3 Grand Archives" but also that is a horrifying amount of work and if you aren't going to enjoy that level of rigorous adherence to exact challenge rules, don't put yourself through that. Definitely enjoying more Oblivion shenanigans, it's such a messy game but has such charm to it.

I always thought it was a boring fetch quest with improbably loe chances of ever completing it. So much so that the unusual gems in skyrim were easy to find. Probably one of the more useful quest rewards outside of unique weapons/armor. If you have the stuff, gold, and patience to do so.

well, depending on your outlook of my video lol. I actually forgot about staves and scrolls not leveling anything, so if you can get out of the starting dungeon without gaining a level, you'd be mostly in the clear to get through the rest of the game, and if you wanted to add on leveling mercantile you could in the ways I did

For the Daedra, you can kill Umbra without starting the quest, and still bring it to Clavicus for the reward. You do not need to be level 20 to do the quest, you need to be level 20 to get it from Clavicus
