Favorite ROM hack is definetely Blazed Glazed. Really big game so that you spend 3 weeks playing through the game instead of the 2/3 days that normal pokemon games take.

My favorite romhack has to be Pokemon Unbound. The starter options are all exceptionally unique without being unbalanced, piles of content with the side quests with genuinely useful rewards so it doesn't feel like pointless wandering, and making a properly competitive team is doable with effort, sitting in a nice middle-ground between regular pokemon and romhacks that give you direct pokemon editting npcs. Plus there is not only a wide amount of difficulty options, but you can downgrade if you find things too hard. Crystal Clear deserves a mention too for being both amazing, if dated, and I think introduced the tradeback npc that just gave you your pokemon back so you could trigger trade evolutions on your own instead of the weird added at ultra-high levels thing used in Emerald Kaizo.

You do get to battle thr Stat trainers, the ones that originally just followed and helped you. But in the Battle Area, only in Platinum. It's there, but not required.

Pokémon Gaia is easily the best rom hack. I’d strongly recommend you play through it. Original region, original story, gen 1-6 Pokémon, gen 3 pixel style, medium difficulty.
