Speculation, but here's a thought: the reason for Grit's and Max's stats in Advance Wars 1 was because they were originally designed for an engine closer to Super Famicom Wars where units attack simultaneously. Max was most likely designed to be a player CO for a campaign where you never had to fight the guy, so multiplayer balance would've been a complete non-factor in designing him with immense firepower to punch through everybody. What's more, is this guy needed to somehow win engagements against Kanbei, who has innately higher Defense than everybody else and ALSO hits harder on top of that. It would later change to the current system of the attacker going first before the second player counterattacks. They then played the campaign enough to note that it felt balanced enough for a singleplayer game and left it alone. Whether this is because they forgot about Max/Grit or because they simply didn't have more time to test is anybody's guess. If any of this speculation checks out then it would mean the reason the two of them were rebalanced for AW2 would, more than anything else, have to do with Grit being playable in the first place and now having to compare to Max directly on maps where both of them can be deployed at once unlike in AW1 where you only got one or the other even on the final map. At this point it would become painfully obvious that Max is just better and that Grit from AW1, while he has his niche, wouldn't be doing all that much in his campaign maps if he didn't have extra firepower and not just more range.
@menhirmike3 ай бұрын
Makes me wonder if there is any kind of Rom Hack for AW1 to make it simultaneous attack instead. I would assume that they've changed it early enough to balance the campaign about attacker going first, but it could be interesting to see how it plays.

In the victory screen they are shouting "Banzai!" which literally means "ten thousand years" in Japanese. Its meaning isn't really well reflected in the literal translation, though. It's used, in general, to wish long life for someone or something. It is a traditional thing to shout, specifically, with regard to the Emperor of Japan, basically wishing that he reigns for ten thousand years. In that latter connotation it is an abbreviated form of a famous Japanese battle cry, "tennouheika banzai!" (literally "may the Emperor live ten thousand years!") Basically it is the little soldiers in the game shouting the equivalent of "great job, may you lead us forever!" (I posted this before getting to the part where it said wrong answers only! lol. My bad.)

I really like the railgun concept in SFW, particularly when compared to Dual Strike’s Piperunners. Piperunners are strong, sure, but they can only move on pipes that the rest of your army can’t, and require a base to be right next to pipes to deploy without blocking that base. They just end up in places where your army isn’t and need specific consideration in maps; an annoyance for both players and map makers. Meanwhile, the Railgun has a similar concept, but has its own deploy property, runs on rails that other units can at least go over, and functions as a transport. Add in the indirect fire on top of that makes it incredibly useful, pretty much the opposite of Piperunners.
@caellanmurphy47513 ай бұрын
partially units can indeed move over it and infantry are fine but to tanks and wheeled vehicles its basically the equivelent of AW FORESTS as they have a 3 and 4 move penalty iirc making the transport part VERY useful

2 hours of pure insanity!? With guests? THIS is the pinnacle of the deathless challenges, on a game with maps so terribly balanced that it's no wonder this video is the longest of the bunch. I know what I'm going to watch as a movie tonight! I will say this again, Mangs, but thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of the crazy journey that was this challenge. Mangs really worked hard on this one and deserves a lot of praise : one needs to attempt this challenge first to truly understand the level of dedication and craziness you need to make such a video. Ephraim and I helping out was just the cherry on top to help ease his mind when facing such infuriating designs. In the end, this game was still fun to tackle with the "puzzle" mindset. I'm happy to have been able to show the limits of what was possible and add another perspective on such a challenge. And, even though I'm not done with this game yet, I first want to erase some terrific memories of it for a while, and I'm not the only one feeling the same... xD Oh, and, did you guys found the hidden egg?
@merabledawnspark58273 ай бұрын
MY..... GOD MAN XD Truly, no challenge is impossible for you XD Interesting how the AI behaved a bit differently here than the ones in the GBA. Think that's why with each new release of Advance Wars, Intelligent Systems keep finding ways to improve the AI?
@N.H.233 ай бұрын
@@merabledawnspark5827You have no idea how much I wanted to talk about this for the past month xD I also broke a few days ago Final Battle and Royal Channel down to their lowest day count possible while doing it deathless (as well as Countdown, I found something crazy for the whole "Train in the way" issue in the end) but it was too late and I don't think me taking over the video would have been great anyway, seeing Mangs beat these is the fun of these videos too. So I'll just make videos on these and more in the future instead ^^ As for the AI, it's closer to the GBA games than you think, but the GBA games have AI values telling the game what type of behavior each unit need to follow, with these behavior being a lot more broad and developped. This game, on the other hand, each CO is that specific value, each CO will make all units act a certain way (with less and simpler options than on the GBA, of course). Advance Wars 1 has something similar but only for Olaf and Kanbei when using Infantries and Artilleries, compared to every other CO who have a different behavior with these units. But yes, with new games, and reusing part of the previous AI, that's effectively why IS was finding ways to improve the AI and create new behaviors, with the DS era being a huge step-up with more memory and processing power while also learning from the mistakes of the previous games.
@merabledawnspark58273 ай бұрын
@@N.H.23 Considering how much work has been put in, I can only get a few ideas as to that XD For the AI, huh. That's pretty interesting. For me, I've never played Super Famicom Wars, so this is a bit of a surprise to hear that it is almost behaving like its GBA counterpart :P Now this is making me really curious on the Switch version. I did notice a few of the AI's behavior in terms of how they use their power, but the movement I'll have to pay extra close attention on that detail.
@N.H.233 ай бұрын
@@merabledawnspark5827For example, in the GBA games, for identical units on identical terrain, the AI attacks units clockwise. Same here. Another thing, for both games, when targeting a unit (which unit to move towards), the AI chooses the unit placed first in memory. One difference is how the AI values some units and how it values confirmed kills versus damaging units. It seems to me there are slight varations in how the AI handles this, confirmed kills in Advance Wars might have a lot more weight. At least, with how easy it is to bait the AI in attacking healthy units first in SFW sometimes, it feels like so. Refueling also works a bit differently and took into account how difficult it is to refuel in this game, so air (not Copters) and naval units tend to go refuel extremely early for example, once reaching under 50% fuel. Pretty sure the other units works more or less like in the GBA games. I could go on but you get the idea. The base for the SFW AI is really similar to the GBA games. But it's still a way simpler version of the GBA AI at the end of the day, so a lot of what happens in SFW is basically just the AI "choosing" between 2 different behaviors at best, then having slight variations in movement thanks to RNG, nothing more. The rest is CO-dependant as I said in my previous comment, so some COs like Rogenski have a (pretty big) chance for some units (Infantries and Indirects mostly) to never attack for example, while others don't. I've always heard that Hetler was a defensive CO for example so he also probably has difference like these. While a CO like Yamamoto is probably hyper offensive (I haven't played against him, yet ^^').
@Rislear3 ай бұрын
did you use your real voice for the VO this time?
@frjoethesecond3 ай бұрын
In real life, you have to build your vehicles in factories and train your soldiers far away from the front near the supply hubs. The way SFM handles this is quite realistic. You can land, repair and re-supply away from home, but there's no way you're going to be building stuff. Plan your logistics in advance or be punished. Also, these types of strategic-bombers are useless against ships in real life too. Ships can easily dodge bombs unless they're moored in a harbour. The striker is equipped with armour penetrating missiles specifically designed for destroying ground based vehicles.
@KopperNeoman3 ай бұрын
So what you're saying is that SFW bombers should get a damage bonus against ships docked in harbours?
@frjoethesecond3 ай бұрын
KopperNeoman Sure, although I'd also say that aircraft should take some damage when attacking units positioned on bases, airports and harbours to represent AA fire. Different types of air units would take different amoints of damage depending on their speed and stealth capabilities.
@VainerCactus02 ай бұрын
Well, there are Naval Strike Missiles of various sorts plus the Rapid Dragon delivery system in the works. Of course, Rapid Dragon is for cargo planes but you get the idea.
@thomasbuckley14363 ай бұрын
I think strikers in this game are more to represent naval bombers/close air support in comparison to the normal bombers. The bombers in these games are more indicative to large bomber squadrons taking out major static targets deep into enemy territory. They really can't handle moving targets very well, and in naval situations a near miss is more pronounced then on land. Dedicated naval bombers or CAS, meanwhile tend to use torpedoes for their main missile weaponry which can reck ships from under the sea. Meanwhile the fighters are just that, fighters with the express purpose of defending or attacking other planes, and are thus usually better equipped at taking out bombers and cas than they are in reverse, as you said. It's actually funny because of the sort of Air triangle those three have (Bomber/Strikers > Anti-airs > Fighters > Bomber/Strikers) Not to mention the old infamous story during one of the US's training fights the air commander 'broke the rules' by having his fighters/attack planes come in too low for the ship AA to handle. Tactical bombers surely wouldn't be able to do that, but strike planes did. It made large battleships overall obsolete after WWII if air was in anyway play. And if you had enough air to be protected, you'd be better off cost-wise just using cas, bombers, and artillery even to do the battleships job anyway...
@ZeroNumerous3 ай бұрын
Strikers represent multi-role planes like the F-15, Typhoon, etc etc. Hence why they're called Strikers, named after Strike Fighters: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strike_fighter Fighters represent interceptors like the F-106, F-14, F-22, etc etc. They (usually) lack ATG capabilities in favor of air superiority missions.

This is an incredibly exciting and welcome surprise Mangs! I was not at all expecting you to run this game on this challenge, since SFW doesn't have a "traditional campaign." DoR and SFW are my two favorite games in the franchise. A lot of that largely has to do with the shared mechanics of promotions as well as similar units, and Naval combat being arguably the best in both games overall. The duster is a good analogy for the striker if you are considering where they are deployed from, i.e. airports. However, there is a far better comparison in the seaplane. That is the only plane in DoR that can attack all units save a submerged sub, and does good damage to said units. Simultaneous attacking in this game does pose an issue for folks not all too used to it, and more familiar with the later games... But, I actually think it is an interesting quirk that gives some uniqueness to this entry. It's crazy to me that the A.I. doesn't cheat in fog, yet in Thracia he most definitely does. I wonder if that choice was an intentional one. Thank you for referring to the AI as "he/him" instead of "they." It really is not difficult to speak proper English. "They" ALWAYS implies multiplicity. The term can never be used to address a singular being. In this case, the opponents you are fighting are MALE characters. Fictional or no, he is still male. One of only two options he could be, might I add. Awesome video!

1: Caroline, a female CO he did go up against. 2: they or them by grammar rules can refer to someone who you usually don't know, which is an instance of singular referral. "Who are they?" I remember using stealth fighters in Dual Strike more for their function as strikers than the actual stealth function; can’t speak for actual SFW strikers, but in that regard stealth fighters were balanced imo. Yes, it could hit everything fighters and bombers could hit, but it would never hit as hard as either of those units. You build one, for that purpose at least, when you only have one airport and need to be able to hit either target set next turn; if you have multiple airports or setup time, though, building fighters and bombers like normal is often more optimal. A stealth can hit, but a bomber will kill.

I've never even heard of this game before, nor seen the prototype versions of these maps. A couple of thoughts: 1: Coral Lagoon is actually a fun map with the AW rules, when the attacker strikes first. It's quite ridiculous how much momentum is lost due to simultaneous strike. 2: Can you still recover fuel and ammo by combining units? If so, that seems like an obvious thing to do with aircraft. 3: I like stally naval maps in general, and as such, I like bounty river from time to time... but my goodness, what were they thinking here? 4: If APC's are now unable to supply units, their price should be reduced to 3500, even if they have a machine gun. Recon's are still better for interrupting caps, and are obviously vital for vision. 5: Similar to riggs, supply trucks should be able to build temporary ports/airports in 1 turn, to extend the range of your planes. 6: Yeah, the anti-air setup in later games is definitely better. The flak gun is superfluous, and not having a good anti-air makes bombers overpowered. 7: Strikers might be overpowered. Their speed should drop to 7 squares, same as bombers. Being multi-purpose is enough of a flex on its own. 8: Now that I think about it... strikers are perfect for carriers in DOR, especially due to the supply issue. The price of the carrier should just be dropped to 15K. 9: From playing a lot of DS, I have come to believe that heavy tanks are a mistake: since only other heavy tanks can face them up close, you lose all momentum, and the game stalls hard. 10: Lost river and rivers four gave me another idea: what if riggs/supply trucks were allowed to build roads and bridges? Like engineering vehicles? It would still be a niche thing which probably won't see a lot of use outside of the war room, but it would be cool. 11: Rail guns would definitely be cool to see! A lot more interesting then piperunners, which are defensive units only. 12: If the Neo's would look like proto's, I would certainly by them more. They are so goofy. Anyway, this was a lot of fun to watch, and it makes me appreciate how much they improved the playability aspect of the game. Thanks a lot!

2 - Yes, you still recover fuel and ammo by combining units and it is your best bet with air units, but you need them to be injured and it's not always easy, even more when doing this deathless because you don't want to take risks and some damage ranges aren't in favor of even attempting that. 4 - I agree. Another thing that makes transports bad is that, if they get damaged in this game, the unit inside does too, down to the same HP as the transport that unit is in (so injured transports are even worse at their job). 5 - That's why this game would really benefit from getting a remake/hack modernizing some of the ideas, the maps in particular being really bad. Imagine if Days of Ruin had been a spin-off series, still under the Advance Wars name but clearly being its own thing while Intelligent System would still give us "regular" Advance Wars games, and had been taking on some of Super Famicom Wars' best aspects and added on some the good new aspects of DoR like better Fog of War, Rigs, etc... We might have got more games in the future, à la Fire Emblem, instead of nothingness and a meh remake. 6 - I disagree on Flak Guns being useless, having only Missiles as an indirect anti-air unit isn't great in AW already (and in SFW they are even worse, they can't traverse Forest and Shoal tiles at all and only gives 1 vision in FoW) and Flak Guns really feels like a decent unit, having decent mobility compared to Missiles and still a decent range (both could be better but still enough for such a low price). And with how bad Anti-Airs are, they are more than needed. If Anti-Airs were slightly better though, they probably would need a slight buff but I think such a unit can really benefit a game like this one, after all it's not Advance Wars and doesn't play exactly like the same (nor should it). 7 - Strikers seem overpowered until they don't feel as much. Still a great unit but Fighters still hard counter you so you still need Fighters to counter opposing Fighters and Bombers just do more damage to almost everything while costing less. The only unit that would be worth getting a Striker for, outside of being able to slightly damage Fighters, is Battleships but it's not that big of a jump in damage to be worth it. 9 - Agree but this game is all about stall with how it's built so they probably were created with that in mind. One thing against big units is how they also get chip damage way faster than you would expect because of simultaneous damage, so Mechs and smaller Tanks aren't nice to attack when you get 1 to 3HP of damage every time. Also, Mechs being able to always do this much damage to Tanks is insane for a 3000 funds unit, no wonder Hetler is considered the worst CO to fight against when he is known to spam them, making winning a slog even more. 10 - I'm editing this comment to talk about that idea, seeing carbag's comment on this : it would be an amazing concept for this game because the gameplay works really well with the idea of stealing and reinforcing positions (which is completely different to what works with Advance Wars, being more about a slow map control, not a zone by zone one) so units able to build roads/bridges and fortifications would add to that aspect. I doubt in the SNES it would have been a thing but for a modernized spin-off, that would be great. And sadly most maps in this game don't really show off that aspect of map control zone by zone, the same maps that tend to not be as fun, to be just a boring grind, which are actually the same maps who work way better with the Advance Wars' gameplay (or just are bad maps in general). I still recommend you try the game to see these things and more for yourself but it's still a decently fun game. With better maps not as stally and taking into account the refueling issue, it would be a great game : the simulataneous damage, the fact you can't build outside of your main base, level-ups, etc... all of these things create a different but still similarly fun experience compared to Advance Wars.

@@N.H.23 6: Yeah, good point. Just being tracked already makes them necessary. I don't have a lot of experience with missiles anyway. I guess I am too used to DS, in which the AI actually cares about it's units to some extend, and doesn't just yeet them at an anti-air for no reason, so the focus is on outranging your opponent. Also, I wasn't necessarily thinking about an update, more about incorporating elements of this in new games, or in games like DOR. Even with the first strike advantage, AW is still a stally game, but with simultaneous strike, open tank battles become impossible, which cuts down any advance almost immediately. In addition, due to the poor anti-airs, bombers and strikers are overpowered, and can only really be countered with fighters- thus setting off a massive air war. So I don't think SFW should be used as the template, rather that some aspects of it are cool.
@N.H.233 ай бұрын
@@larsdejong7396No worries on that, you haven't played it yet so it's pretty normal you can't see a good use in them when, as you said it, Missiles are so bad it's almost automatic to think any type of anti-air indirect would be (I expected the same at first when seeing them with their small range), but Flak Guns not being on tires make them able to do some work (they would need a bit more points in movement if Anti-Airs were to be buffed though). I was talking about "modernizing" the game and mentionning DoR for that reason, it would be better to take the best of both worlds for sure. But, where I will disagree, because I've played it for almost 2 months now, is how bad the stall would get : most indirects aren't that great, Rockets and Battleships sure are "strong" but both have glaring issues too (movement for one, being extremely expensive/limited for the other), so you are forced to go for direct combat anyway. Artilleries are really bad, they do a lot less damage. Missiles, well, you already know. And Flak Guns are decent but only for air units (and without them, you said it, air units would be even more king than they already are, that's why Anti-air units would need a buff anyway). Another issue is maps : the maps in SFW are horrendous, no amount of fast-paced combat would make these not a stall-fest. If the maps were built to create zones to conquer and defend, being more open so you don't get these huge one tile pathways you see on almost every map, and balance units a bit more, this game wouldn't be as stally. Or at least the "stall" would be more about defending than stalling. Maybe having better movement on some units or more ways to transport units would be better to combat stall while keeping what SFW is good at (maybe you could get a cheap train-like unit, that doesn't attack but is able to transport 4/5 units and move on rails but can't unload units unless the Depot tile is yours, so it lets you ferry units and help defend positions as you move forward). Plus, having a slower gameplay isn't that bad, it's the why that can be problematic or not : if it's slow but in a proactive way, aka defending zones and preparing the next push, it's not boring compared to "I need to kill Mech number 123 because the AI is spamming them and there are only one tile I can pass through and I can't even get a Domination win because the last property I need to capture to get to the threshold is beyond that huge chokepoint, thanks to the devs being dumb".
@larsdejong73963 ай бұрын
@@N.H.23 The poor movement of rockets doesn't really bother me. If it gets to the point that I have to build them, the game is either stalling or gonna stall. It is much more of a problem for missiles, as planes can zoom around it's poor range all day long. You do make a good point about the maps, I was just making the point that it makes it even worse, even on maps with multiple fronts, like mial's hope or dire range. I do like the idea of an unarmed transport train. Let's just call it a lorry. :)

FYI, Mangs, "casualties" means everything including mere injuries. The word you're looking for is "losses", which generally means deaths, or in the case of vehicles, completely destroyed vehicles. Anyway, love the humor style of this game. Really tongue-in-cheek.
@SteamWolf3203 ай бұрын
The translation says “casualties” but this could be an error I suppose.
@KopperNeoman3 ай бұрын
@@SteamWolf320 The use of "casualties" here would be accurate if each unit was an individual rather than a squad, which this challenge treats them as. (The Wars series are really inconsistent on that - some units are individuals and some are squads, so :P) Walking wounded aren't considered to be casualties, IIRC. A casualty is a unit that is too badly wounded or damaged to continue fighting.
@SteamWolf3203 ай бұрын
@@KopperNeoman Makes sense. I'm used to Advance Wars By Web which doesn't have the animations, so I don't think of the units as squads as much. That does explain mechanics such as joining injured units, however. I think some games have a mechanic where multiple units of the same type that are close together get boosts, thus forming what one might consider a squadron, but I would imagine a game with that mechanic would treat its units with more individuality.

Very surprising that it's possible but wow, amazing. Good to see the guests too and overall fantastic video. A challenge I had in mind was kind of thought of via the pokemon games. Can you beat the advance war campaigns if you have the worst luck possible. So your units never do increased damage, the enemies always hit max luck and if random weather is on, it will always be a problem for you. I get if that challenge idea is ignored since it might not really change a thing but it was a suggestion either way.

I kinda hope they will try again having ships move through rivers. An idea I had is maybe that you have 2 kinds of naval units: Ships and boats. Ships are the standard ones but boats are the lander and maybe 2 more. They can move onto shoals and through rivers while ships can't and the 2 boats can each transport 1 infantry/mech while the lander can transport 2 units as normal. I think the good boats would be a torpedo boat that can attack naval vessels but has only 1 shot and a monitor that is basically a floating artillery with having to set up to shoot. I would think it would make control of the rivers quite important. I think both should have a light cannon that can take out infantry and deal some damage to light vehicles to make sure they aren't too easily walled. I think giving landers the ability to move slow units like rockets and heavy tanks quickly through rivers will make them more common to see. There could again be the rough seas but they are completely impassible to boats. Torpedo boats would be a cost effective answer to battleships so hiding them behind rough seas would be a good tactic. I think another naval unit that has been long overdue is a proper cruiser as the current "cruiser" is a destroyer. It would be a combined direct/indirect unit that can either move and shoot directly or not move and shoot indirectly up to 3 range. Basically a medium tank and an artillery piece combined. They would also have direct AA guns though not to the same power as the destroyer.
