Can You Beat Uncharted 4 With No Kills?

Today I try to beat Uncharted 4 as a pacifist and it's a struggle. Watch the video to see how it goes and just how many enemies I had to kill in order to beat the game.

Avery's house was BRUTAL on the hardest difficulty, that was when i decided it wasn't worth my time and lowered it to hard, making the game actually enjoyable

Definitely one of the hardest encounters in the game to me. Pretty fun when I replayed that part after beating the game so I could actually fight back lol.

I was able to beat his house on the hardest difficulty but only because I used autoaim for the one segment in the room right before you and Elena open a door in a big entrance hall area. Though even with auto aim that segment was absolutely fucking brutal. It didn't help that my ammo was shite at the time either.

i did it on crushing and actually enjoyed it, took a few tries and a short chuck norris film to get past the ambush, but i ASSURE to you, chap 20 is simply torture on crushing, i had less bullets on both weapons than enemies onscreen

I think you could have modified the rules to count actual kills by Nate, not the stat. This would mean that enemies who crash themselves into rocks or die without Nate's assistance wouldn't count. You could also drive the number down by resorting to melee combat and stealth, assuming that takedowns are technically non-lethal. The only kills that would count would be mandatory firearm kills and kills during linear action sequences like the Madagascar chase.

That’s definitely a good point since some of the kills that count aren’t done by me directly! My reasoning for using the counter was that it was something objective I could point to. My playthrough of TLOU2 where I attempted no kills didn’t have a stats counter and there were a few kills in that I wasn’t sure if I should count or not so this gave me a more direct answer to what my count should be.

@@epiccakesgaming TLOU2 is definitely a bit more suited for pacifist playthrough than Uncharted 4, simply because many encounters can be skipped. You can just avoid a lot of the enemies and sneak past them. However, killing people in TLOU is just too satisfying to avoid it. It would be physically painful to me to avoid combat when it's so addictive and visually impressive. P.S. This video is very well made. Quality content.

for those of you still confused about what the term ludonarrative dissonance it is essentially the inconsistency of a chracrters actions when performed as part of the game play. Uncharted and the last of us are brilliant examples where it exists and where it doesn't. Nathan Drake is not a mass murderer according to the game world and characters around him. Even though he has guns in cut scenes no characters acknowledge Nate's actions from gameplay and so who Nate is vs how the player plays him are inconsistent. On the other hand the last of us does not suffer from ludonarrative dissonance because the person Joel is in gameplay is the same person in the cutscenes. Every person Joel kills in gameplay can be justified by the world in which he lives (survival of the fittest) Joel is not presented as better than his actions because he is the same person when he is a father to Sarah or Ellie and when he turns someone's stomach inside out tortures someone for information. To summarise - Inconsistency of chracter between the story being told and how the game is played.

Elena may not be good at killing guys in a gun fight, but she's great at stealth killing people. I utilized that to full effect when playing on the hardest difficulty during segments where I wanted to either stealth through or take down as many guys before starting a fight as possible. Also at one point she saved my life by killing one of those heavy breathing guys that chase you down and grapple you. Just ganked that bitch while he was mid choke, and because of that I finally survived that segment after many many tries lol.

i can say this, playing this game on crushing without cheats and strats takes probably as much time as this playthrough (took me 29 hours and 471 failed checkpoints...)

I think if you played on the easiest difficulty you definitely could have gotten the kill count down, especially with the allies more likely to help out and possibly less difficult armoured enemies spawn (not sure about that though)

Less armoured enemies do spawn as higher difficulties spawn extra ones, in the first encounter on the island on crushing difficulty it spawns a mini gunner at the end

12:13 I swear, in a crushing playthrough this is the hardest bit in the game, you can't judt grapple onto the truck from your 4x4 becuase u get shot and die but trying tk kill every enemy is nearly impossible

While self defense is a good excuse in some parts, something you have to keep in mind is that Nate voluntarily chooses to go to these places knowing he will have to kill. It's especially obvious in 4 when Rafe gives Nate a chance to step away from the whole adventure. Even worse when you remember that Rafe isn't even trying to get something world threatening like the first 3 games. At least with those you could retroactively justify those kills

The section at 9:45 doesn't need you to clear the enemies actually. I've done it tons of times without killing anyone while speedrunning, you just got to be fast and lucky. Just thought you should know you wasted an hour of your life lmao. Great video though, man

Ludonarrative dissonance is problematic on so many levels. It only exist to alienate intellectualism instead of understanding complex ideals, it only favors to the pure and pompous bunch that only want to impress people by finding words they made up; gaming journalist make mountains out of molehills over stuff like that. The argument is also filled with so many holes for a pacifist argument; so it's not okay for Drake to kill a thousand mercenaries but it's ok for the mercenaries to kill Drake. C'mon they hold a gun to him, what do you want him to do give them a happy meal? that wouldn't make for an engaging and interesting story would it. Drakes only purpose in life is to explore the world and find treasure, the mercenaries only exist to stand in Drake's way because they can't butt out of every game they appear in. What Drake does in those playable segments is an act of self-defense(which is what everyone does); he is only doing his part to survive in a world that wants him dead and in the world of Uncharted: "it's either kill or be killed". Ludonarrative pretentiousness only rewards non-gamers who just want everything handed to them and not gamers for thinking. it only exist to stereotype and make insane takes out of everything. So in conclusion: Amy Hennig is a pacifist. Neil Druckmann is a chad.
