In-universe, Inquisitor Amberley Vail is editing Cain's diary for the Inquisition as his many heroic encounters with the enemies of Mankind is both numerous and informative. She provides some snarky 'meta-narration' and comments on the events, some of which she was personally there for, and on the characters involved. Occasionally Vail (very reluctantly) uses other sources like a particular General to fill in the gaps. Cain himself suffers from the worst case of imposter syndrome imaginable. Overall its a very satisfying cast and stories with great voice acting in the audiobooks. You can basically start anywhere. There is some continuity, but the books do a good job of filling in the details where needed and the series is essentially a bunch of self-contained adventures. Monster-of-the-week type hijinxs.

Your criticisms are certainly valid, and other games handle it better (hiding geometry when it gets in the way, easier camera rotation, specific camera angles for cutscenes, etc). Just a fair warning that if you play other games like this, you may have similar complaints.

40:55 the Daemon Tool might be irrelevant for this run, but it's GODLIKE on any party that has Cassia and a pyromancy psyker. She has a funny attack that covers about half of an entire postal code that deals a good amount of warp damage, which sets everyone on fire with the Daemon Tool, and then the psyker gets to use Inflame to great effect

Yes, and it's arguably a bigger threat to the imperium than chaos. Because the whole reason the imperium really stands, is that they've convinced the population that it's the only way to stand against chaos. But with Iconoclasts you have the belief that you can fight chaos in a different way. It's a lot easier to convince people the brutality of the imperium is the only way to stand against chaos, when you don't have a guy waving an alternative in front of everyone.

Just as a note. Soldier with Psyker can be very strong because Run and Gun will work with it. Letting you light more than one enemy on fire, or once you get to a certain level, light one on fire and then use them to light a bunch more on fire. Pyromancy like the Operative also does get passive effects that will reduce targets armor. Though I'm not sure that you can get them before you take on the Chaos Beast in the Tutorial.

I also found that mid-game Soldier can use Run and Gun and then their ultimate ability to just shoot until their gun is empty, which is a lot of times if you have a heavy weapon with 96 bullets by the end of the game.

@shroomer3867 i haven't seen an ability that empties a gun. It is based off the rate of fire to my knowledge, and it limits to firing your weapons basic attack. Though I admit there may be some ability I missed. If I did I'd love to know which one.

Hah. Love the ending. I'm sure others have already said, but you can definitely beat that fight (and the rest of the game) with one unit. But it's really hard if you don't have, say, 1000 hours or so learning the details of every single mechanic in the game. I really enjoyed watching this though and hope you come back to it in the future. My favorite game of the last couple of years by far.

Fun fact: My first character was a pew pew guy who was capable of making multiple shots per round. Now you could argue that without the buffs from Cassia and other characters he wasn't that good but the fact that he was able to put Aurora down in three turns is impressive. Also he was able to pick off all the electro priests.

Btw, in case you're interested in doing more warhammer 40k styled games: *Hired Gun Necromunda: fast paced FPS with a 12 mission campaign, you have a skill tree and a cyber mastiff that has its own skill tree. *Mechanicus: Kinda like X com but not. Human tech nerds fighting alien robot skeletons. *Chaos Gate: Kinda like X com but not. Super secret space marines. *Space Marine 2: 3rd person shooter kinda like Gears of War without all the cover. The campaign is pretty controlled though. *Dawn of War: 1 is your typical early 2000 RTS, Dawn of War 2 is more of a skirmish game that borrows RTS elements. Dawn of war 3 ended up being some sort of MOBA RTS hybrid. *Darktide: It's vermintide, a FPS mission based grindfest where you are supposed to play with other people. Not a good match for a challenge run but great fun.

Hey Lemon, I'm not sure how much it helps, but in the character-creation menu you actually showed of a way to increase your movement! At 3:28 there is the "Locomotion System" feature, and as you can see, it grants you agi-bonus/2 movement permanently.

This is how you solve soloing the game. "Abelard, go get them'!" Bu seriously, the mitigation and movement you can get on a build with his base setup is just insane. The parry mechanic and temp hp, with automatic responses to melee attacks can wipe entire enemy parties outside your own turn. Looking forward to part 2.

Hey Lemon, I was watching some old DS1 videos of yours and noticed you use the drake bridge to grind. If you want to save a bit more time, start with the master key, loot fire link, blight town swamp, valley of the drakes, the hollow, ash lake, dark root garden, and a bit of new londo ruins. This sounds like a lot but it really only takes 20-30 minutes for 20000+ souls. With that you can level up or buy the crest of artorias for a grinding spot that’s way better. You probably already know all this but thought it might help

I absolutely adore the gilded Arvus Lighter shuttle you use, it's "the little lander that could" in the wider setting! It's Machine Spirit is described as 'truculent and stubborn', yet it's dearly beloved by Imperial pilots for always somehow managing to get you there against the odds. I picked up four for the Aeronautica Imperialis dogfighting wargame, just love the design and models so much. Might paint one up in this scheme :)

With Carnival of Misery, you can also pick an effect that immediately detonates all the DoT stacks. Theoretically speaking, the strongest version of the Execution is if you stack Pyromancy with Bladedancer (for bleed stack) and Biomancy (it has a passive that throws poison on every enemy affected by psy powers), then ignite yourself for extra damage (use the pyromancy passive), then detonate the Carnival of Misery. To get enough resolve on turn 1, you'd need a bit of fiddling -- either pump your resolve with gear, or get the Black Ring from the Inquisitor that gives you a 0 AP ability to give yourself +50 resolve...

Lemon, I heavily implore you to look into Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. It's an older one, but it's like the pinnacle of 40k RTS, which is really how 40k should be experienced as a beginner, and you can do SO MUCH. Wanna become a Shard of C'Tan? Do it. Wanna become a Bloodthirster, Champion of Khorne? Do it. Wanna erase all xenos from the planet with the might of the Imperium? Do it. It's so open-ended and active that what you think is a simple campaign to victory becomes a jigsaw of everyone competing for everything until you erase their whole factions from the map. It is legitimately one of the most badass campaigns I've played since Battlefront 2 (the real one, not the shitty remake) I don't even like RTS games, but, like I said, the ability to both pause and think AND be subject to how the real-time combat plays out creates so many scenarios where you're just brainstorming ways to counter your enemies while also pumping all your resources into the troops you think you need and you're going insane and FINALLY, you get 40k. It's insane, it's over the top, and suffering is inate to the experience, so roll with the punches and live on to say "haha, I lived, bitch"

Hey, this is a Warhammer fan. Welcome to the hobby :D I'm really happy to see some Warhammer content and that you like it, but a lot of the 40k games are hit or miss, so it could be good to take a look at that if you want to play more 40k games I don't know if you are interested in suggestions, but if you are, I think you could really enjoy a run of Warhammer 40k Mechanicus going for no damage (on techpriests)

Funny thing is one of the main bad guys motto is "let the galaxy burn." As someone who always plays a good guy in games, 40k is the one setting i prefer the cartoonishly evil faction because seeing as how there are no "good guys" you might as well have fun with it.

As far as I know bladedancer pyromancer would likely be the strongest combo. Considering it can just detonate entire combat encounters in 1 turn. Not to mention bladedancer has just SOOOO many ways to attack or move more. After that would likely be an Executioner as the second class to take advantage of the amount of fire dots. For the build IIRC Death World is the best homeworld due to its feature. As this build is constantly hurting itself and healing with temporary wounds so good for that.

I remember building my abelard had 80 max wounds/health, yet 4 or 5 turns in he had 210 out of 80 wounds, with half being temporary he just DID NOT DIE damn vanguard with their items (get extra health on parry, dodge and reflection, get temporary health on getting hit, healing at the start of your turn and it doesn't stop)

THEN being a 100+ strength vanguard with a power hammer and using the 4 to 7 bocks of knockback knocking them prone.... pro tip the buff that makes your next melee have knock back.. Works with the hammers area of attack too so you can knock back multiple (my max was 5 or 6

Abelard is genuienly unkillable if you set him up properly. Like its kinda stunning how normal and squishy he is if he gets hit at the begining of combat but after that he is a damn near Space Marine.

It's really cool seeing someone with no knowledge of 40k play this game! Glad you liked the setting and the universe as a whole. I can wholeheartedly recommend Dawn of War 1 and it's expansions, and Space Marine 1 and 2. Gladius is also good, and if you lean more fantasy-y the Total War Warhammer series is also excellent. Plus, there's the "tabletop" and books. The Horus Heresy series are excellently written, "The Infinite and the Divine" is just a wonderful time and two old guys squabbling for milennia, and the Eisenhorn omnibus is legitimately a fantastic series. As for the tabletop, there are several starter sets you could try. The current one has a couple of space marines and a couple of tyranids to try your hand at, so is worth a go.

Well this is a crossover I didn't expect but glad to see it. Ever thought of looking at 40K Mechanicus? Its a solid game if you enjoy X-Com style combat. Massively customisable characters and some decent options for challenges (range/melee only, Summons damage only ect). It also has an enforced time limit so full runs of the game are fairly manageable.

You know I was kind of hoping a Wrath of the Righteous challenge someday, but that's close enough. Rogue Trader is pretty insane. I would recommend some challenge on WotR, maybe some of the shorter standalone DLC tho, otherwise it'll take you months.

I love Rogue Trader. After polishing from early release, it's one of the best (recent) Warhammer games for getting you immersed into the setting *proper* , with the second best imo being Darktide. It doesn't pull its punches in showing you the absolute, unjustifiable depravity of the Imperium, and how all of its problems tend to be self inflicted. It also, fittingly enough, gets you into the mindset that will let you you how *exactly* one in-universe can attempt to justify it: through small concessions to morality for "the good of humanity". A slow carving away of everything that makes humanity what it is, leaving only empty husks that feed on hatred and fear. Prime vessels for Chaos, which only feeds back into the Imperial cycle. Lovely game, I plan on doing another playthrough once the Arbites DLC comes out.

Just two days ago I suddenly got roped into playing the 40k Deathwatch TTRPG, which I believe uses mostly the same base system as this game. Kind of funny to see Lemon now also being pulled into 40k through the RPGs (although I played a decent bit of the board game and Total War games many years ago)
