It's hard to be this Portasol Super Pro 125 Soldering Kit. This thing is very small and gets super-hot very quickly. Portasol is based in Ireland and they've made soldering irons for other major tool companies as well. This Super Pro 125 kit comes with the butane-powered soldering iron and multiple tips for soldering, heating, and even cutting. Two switches operate the small hand-held cordless soldering iron. Slide one switch to the "On" position, then click the igniter switch that quickly gets the iron to temperature. A dial at the bottom of the solder iron adjusts the amount of heat you want on the tip.

Back in the day, I used to buy and use these doing industrial maintenance. They work very well. Until you refill it. After that, dark spots or regions, would appear on the heating element. Would be new elements but it was never nearly as good after refilling. Not just one unit but every one I bought. I'd have to see a long term, after innumerable refills, review before I'd by another. Loved them when they worked. Used Ronson butane and other brands I know longer remember. Didn't matter where the butane came from.

That's interesting. I was going to say that using good and fresh butane can make a difference, but you mentioned that as well. We will keep an eye on this one. Thanks for the feedback.

@@Shoptoolreviews Thanks for the review and the response. I'd quite curious about a long term review. Truth be told, my brother and I both had them and did the same work which was travel intensive. We both had traveling tool boxes and heavy duty boxes for all manner of tools, including the soldering gear. We both had the same experience with these. As a side note, when using one of these, OVC's could ignite if in sufficient concentration and many situations involve "hot work by permit only" policies, so there are other issues to keep in mind when using possible 'sources of ignition' which these may be considered. Just my 2 cents.

You did fine, the only question I have is did you try turning the fuel control up to generate more heat for the older wire?

If the Heat gets too high..the Tip will be buggered, as I suspects is the case with my Portasol...

i love the portasol stuff but honestly the new usb type c soldering irons are the way to go imo. All you need is a battery bank or a phone charging brick and you can solder anywhere.

ok so ive been using one for these for a fair few years now and its been fine, but recently ive noticed theres a small plastic hose that connects the burner and with the heat and age its developed a crack, after you unscrew it the top part just pulls off, and theres a rubber/plastic hose that connects the parts

never seen one of these butane type soldering irons that lasts more than about a month. battery powered cordless or even corded irons with battery packs and inverters are just better in my opinion,

all my tips are now toast after 5 years of usage and they're 20 - 30$ for each tip on amazon lol... I guess I'll just toss it instead of spending 80$ on new tips

It looks the same as a blue point one and a lot of others. Should do a comparrison, probably find all made by the same company. And yes soldering was crap. Takes the same effort to do a good job as it doed a bad job.

te falta aprender a soldar, el flux va en la union y no deja la punta en la union ya que el cobre se lleva la temparatura primero el flux y despues la punta

You are soldering incorrectly... If you hold the tip underneath the wire, heat rises and will add heat to the wire much more quickly... Then add the solder to the top of the WIRE and it will flow through the wire and create the joint more effectively... There is no need to flux as this is contained in the solder... Also, for the heat shrink, you do not need the heat shield... you will see a larger hole, an exhaust, above the smaller hole that glows when the iron is on... if you hold the larger hole close to the heat shrink, the hot air will shrink the insulation onto the wire... As simple as that... I use these every day and the tips last about 6 months.

You don't need flux when using rosin-core solder.

Not entirely true. The wires were old and oxidized. Using flux helps to clean the joint. And flux doesn’t hurt. Thanks for watching.
