I inherited the house my great-grandfather built in the early 60’s. It has wood shutters and granite countertops and I was in despair over having to replace the wall to wall carpeting in there,till my mother recalled that the house when built had lovely thin plank hardwood floors. A little investigation (family photos) showed it was still there and thanks to the careful care it had received up until being covered it was still in great condition. They had covered the floors when my grandfather started slipping on the slick floors and/or scatter rugs. Around the late 70’s she thought. A quick clean and basic refinish/polish and they’ve looked perfect ever since. So glad to see these “old” styles coming back.

Shutters are elegant, but so expensive. I’m a real estate agent, and on Cape Cod, and in Florida we put the 2 inch slotted blinds in our windows. They were fraction of the cost, and they accomplish the same thing by allowing us to control the light inside and the view outside. And unlike shutters, you can pull them up and retract them completely if you want so it’s never darker than you intend.

Laminate! I am old enough to remember when no one had stone countertops, except for the very wealthy. When granite started being touted for the masses, the appeal was that it was bulletproof and you would never have to replace your counters again. Well, guess what? The masses discovered trends and found that they quickly tired of their granite choices. Or, they bought a pre-owned house and found they could not decorate around the previous owner’s unfortunate granite choices. Anyway, huge, heavy, irreplaceable slabs of stone (they take millions of years for the Earth to manufacture) were broken up and replaced with other huge, heavy, irreplaceable slabs of stone. Most were sourced from quarries not even on this continent. Laminate is now practically bulletproof. It is manufactured of pressboard (ie:tree scraps), paper, photographic or printed images, and a coating. The coating may be made with hydrocarbons, but they also may be made with plant-based finishes. None of this is necessarily shipped from far away. The sheets of laminate now come as long as 12 feet, without repetition of pattern. Edges can be as varied as with stone. Colors are infinite. Changes are easy and do not involve destroying any cabinetry. As for heat resistance, you can take a section of your hated granite or marble to a stone shop and have them make as many stone trivets as you like. (Does anybody really put hot pots on their stone countertops anyway? Doesn’t that involve the risk of cracking?). Or take a few porcelain tiles from your new flooring choice out to the garage and grind the edges smooth and use contact cement to add a cork bottom - cheap, matching trivets!

We bought our 150 year old house 20 years ago and it had brand new Corian solid surface counters in the kitchen including an integrated sink. Very subtle green cast to dark grey counter and a cream sink. As much as I wouldn't have chosen green, it has grown on me and with us as we've made this house our own. It also been an absolute workhorse. It doesn't show anything. It still looks brand new. It definitely scratches if you stick a box from Amazon on the counter after it's been sitting on the porch, but those scratches sort of melt away as you wipe it down. If I got to choose again, I think I'd go with this. Maybe not green. 😉

I’m so happy granite is coming back in because while I love the qualities of granite, I am super picky about the look of the slab, so hopefully being popular again means more options for me!

I pulled out my carpet and have the thin wood planks like said. We refinished it and the wood is gorgeous. How was made early 1900s. Beautiful original floors !!!

I have granite in my 12 year old kitchen…..we picked the slab and I still love it! I’m not a cool color person so this cream and shades of soft brown stone appeals to me. It’s a soft pattern. I did do a traditional Calcutta-like quartz in the master bath in 2020 but I did a honed finish and I love that too! So glad I didn’t do polished though…..

Granite can be very nice but I recommend a honed/matt finish so it's not so so so shiny. There is an incredible honed black granite that is bold without being overpowering. In our ~ 200 yr old farm house, we have a man-made product in the sink area that looks like soupstone - Dekton. It's very durable and hard wearing. We salvaged our wide plank heart of pine floors during home renovations. We had them planed and now are our island countertop. Saved us about $2K, good for the environment, unique look, and respected the history of the house. While durable, I don't think they would hold up in a home with small children.

A year and a half ago we put a soft floral paper behind our bed and that’s it. It’s so beautiful and warm. The murals I never liked. They’ll bore me. We did wall by paper in our little powder visit room on one wall and the front of it mirrored. It reflects beautiful !

As much as I like the white of my quartz, when I replace my countertop, it will be either granite or something cheaper to replace. My quartz is scratched up everywhere, even though they advertise as so hard to scratch. Then they tell me it can’t be repaired. The countertop was just past 1 year when I noticed the scratches. At least granite and marble can be repaired.

Real Quartz is able to be sanded and polished. Maybe the contractor didn't know how or didn't want to do it? I worked for a grave stone lapidairy. Quartz can be refinished as can granite.
@marcilk75349 ай бұрын
@@shinnam quartz or quartzite? Because quartz is man made. Well, I tried to contact several places near me, and no one would do it.

I like the wide plank flooring in newer houses and thin planks in traditional houses. I put a gold speckled granite in our house 14 years ago when we moved in. I would like a different color/ pattern but it has held up very well and been easy to care for.

I have always liked plantation shutters, but, we put impact glass in our house to protect from hurricanes (yes, we live in Florida near the beach) and the builder said we shouldn’t get the plantation shutters. He said we would not be able to clean the interior windows easily. Unbeknownst to him, they had just developed plantation shutters that could be opened completely for interior window cleaning. Anyway, I stuck with what I know and had the honeycomb blinds installed on all the windows. We had the same blinds in our house in Michigan for 23 years and they still looked new and hadn’t even yellowed. I like that I can open the blinds completely and not have any appearance of a blind on the window. I love having all the Florida sun streaming into the house! Plus, my friends who have plantation shutters complain often of having to dust the slats of the plantation shutters all the time. Since I hate dusting, I have decided I don’t like plantation shutters as much as I thought I would! 😂

I put in leathered black granite in my kitchen 3 years ago and love it. I have a traditional home with green cabinets and the granite has some green veining. I love it! It gives a feel of soapstone but easier and cheaper I love the matte look of the leathered finish

My mom always told me fashions come back around. After all, there’s only so much can be done with a skirt length. Makes me laugh to know the wood floors in my 1958 house are back in style. Your videos have been very helpful.

Nearly 20 years ago, I painted my golden oak kitchen cabinets a creamy white and topped them with black galaxy granite. I'm still happy with my choice - which surprises me, because I love changing things up.

I agree look at the slabs and not a 4x4 sample of any countertop. My sister made that mistake and ended up ripping it out it was so ugly. When picking out a slab you absolutely love, walk around twice to make sure. I found myself gravitating back to the one I picked out. Also think about a waterfall, if you cook a lot it’s much easier to clean and durable.
