Off Grid Homesteading With The Skinners

Today I'm back at working on our homemade crane, I welded up one of the outriggers today so I figured it was time to test it out on something heavier than a log or a snowmobile. Today I try to pick up the rear of our car and ....Can you believe? Our homemade actually was able to lift up the rear of our car.

I could not help thinking of you doing a magic act when you asked Heather to walk around the car and show there were no wires, chains or jacks under it..... Hope you have a great day Heather, and you too, The Great Skindini...! LOL Whipple

And so it should as your Jack is a 8 ton lifting capacity and by dividing by the distance from your fulcrum point by the distance the “a”end of the car is no more than 1/2 ton. You are laughing but if you were not a fitter welder I would have worried but because you are an engineer and you would never build anything under built, it’s built like a tank without going overboard. It’s just great to have that gear at your disposal. Saves your backs that’s for sure. Cheers. Btw people may think you did not use the jack but you were using the pressure relief valve to do your lift and if you got it to lift but weighing over the the capacity of the jack then the jack relief valve should have give away I do believe. What do you reckon Cess? Anyway you would never have proved it unless you actually done your maths anyway. Hey just a couple of fitters chatting people! Good to see you back Cess and Heather.

That is a very nice build. I made one similar for my friend. It had 3" pipe in the ground 4ft deep with with flat wings metal welded off the side to keep it plumb. It had 2 7/8 drill stem going into that. The top was similar to yours except I trussed the top with some flat strap. And it was fixed with no hydraulic lift. I welded about a 3 ft piece of 1" pipe straight out of the back so he could swivel it. He had it beside his shop so he could load old riding mowers on the trailer to take to scrap. I saw him lift about a 1000 lbs with it with no problem and swivel it around.

Awesome job! I love seeing “good old boy” engineers like us making quality tools that will be around long after store bought things fall apart. Big question, what did you use to make the pivot point for the base of the crane? It’s got to be pretty robust since that is a high stress area. Look forward to your response. Keep up the great work
@SkinnersOffGrid

Hello, thank you very much. The pivot point is the front spindle off a large scissor lift unit..it's 2" solid round pin with a thick wall pipe slid over the pin. Cheers!

A hook mounted at the base of the crane for a snatch block for pulling heavy or awkward shaped things onto the trailer with the help of a set of removable ramps on the back and you will be set to move anything within the weight limit of the trailer. And a good guess as to the weight you were picking up is about 1200 pounds!
@SkinnersOffGrid
@SkinnersOffGrid 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Frank. I thought of that...the only problem is once the weight pushes down on the rear of the trailer the bike will lift up, then I'd need to make outriggers at the back as well. That's a little more work than I want to put into this trailer. Thanks again. Cheers.
