You are officially a sell-out, Linus. I always thought you'd only sell out to Nvidia or Intel, but now AMD too. The only ones who are saying the R9 285 is good for 4K is AMD, they're trying to sell the shit out of that GPU. The only ones saying that an all-AMD rig is the best for 4K is AMD. Get you away from the camera and on the WAN show or something and you say something different every time. You benchmarked WoW? Really? My ~10 year old computer can run that. You're not a reviewer anymore, you're a living, breathing advertisement. I'm a long term subscriber, I've been watching your videos since you were still at NCIX, the Antec 1100 video was the first video of yours I saw, so this is really disappointing for me to see.
@LinusTechTips
@LinusTechTips 9 жыл бұрын
I don't really understand your comment. Where did I say this rig was "best for 4k" As for WoW, I think your information is a little out of date with the latest expansion it's much more demanding than it used to be.

LinusTechTips Yes, you never said that it was "best for 4k", but come on... Would you not try to make it the best it could be? Anyone who is on a budget always tries to make it as good as possible. You may be right about WoW, but still, it's not demanding at all compared to the titles you mentioned.
@EmmaCross94
@EmmaCross94 9 жыл бұрын
nick hover If you're implying that I hate AMD products, I do not. AMD is quite good at what they do on the graphics side. What I was saying is this: Anyone who tries to say that an all-AMD rig with an R9 285 is the best for 4K is an idiot or is being misleading. Like someone else said in the comments, get a locked i5 and an R9 290 and you'll be doing better.

Linus, holy cow...... Man I really respect you, as do many others here in the comments. But you fudged this configuration up terribly. I am not angry because that everyone has opinions. I am disappointed because I believe that you know this biuld is completely bogus. you wouldn't even use this configuration yourself. I mean a r9 285 to even hook up to a 4k monitor.... really linus? you expect us to believe that you don't know how owning a 290 at its current price range is way more clever for 4k? Whatever disappointed like many of your fans. your supposed to lead people the right way, yet you did the wrong thing for sponsorship. I remember you saying in a WAN show that such a thing would never occur.
@LinusTechTips
@LinusTechTips 9 жыл бұрын
The numbers are right in the graphs for you to see. Freemium and exports grade games run fine on this. I'd be misleading my viewers if I told them they needed a 290 to run LoL at this res. I said right in the video that for triple A titles much more powerful hardware is needed.

so i'm trying to figure out a pc for a church and i don't have a lot of experience with PC's with more than 2 screens. I need to know how good of a graphics card it needs to be able to use 4, 4k tv's to play lets say at most 4, 4k videos on those screens at the same time. Not gaming just like youtube videos/powerpoints etc. i think its resolution would be 15360 x 2160. We need each display to be able to be separate monitors not mirrored. I think a RX 480 can do it but i'm not sure. Can you guys help me out?
@PA5cAl1

I'm actually pretty dissapointed seeing this episode, money is spent really on the wrong components. I know he was sponsored, but for anyone out there wanting to build a budget 4k rig, go for an intel i5-4460 on a cheap motherboard with a gtx970 or a r9-290. Most people wanting a budget pc are not going to overclock anyway so spending a lot of money in areas like the motherboard, cooling, power supply (as long as it is from a reputable brand and supplies enough current it is fine) etc is an absolute waste.
@RainieDays93

I personally would never cheap out on motherboards considering everything else in the PC is connected to it. Also he was given a 8-core but didn't use it. Swapping the 6350 and 285 with 4460 and 970 means a ~$200 increase, you probably won't have enough corners to cut for that much money.

LinusTechTips Great video Linus! Don't listen to the haters in the comments. They clearly didn't watch the video. For heavens sake, you showed us the results of gameplay in the video! For anyone who's saying that the r9 285 is "an illogical choice because it's not powerful enough to run games at 4k" they clearly didn't watch the video in which you specifically stated that you'd need multiple of the highest end graphics card in order to get a playable enjoyable experience in the latest AAA titles. Keep up the good videos!
@captdev
@captdev 9 жыл бұрын
huh?, The R9 285 *can run the games.* Sure. But you would *MUCH BETTER OFF* going for the GTX 970. If you didn't notice by the nature of this video Linus has obviously been bought out by AMD. No way the normal Linus would use components like that in a normal rig.
@muurf383
@muurf383 9 жыл бұрын
Captans KZbin Yeah, but this isn't a "normal rig". The build was specifically aimed at being able to play more mainstream titles in 4k, not new, AAA titles. The gtx 970 is 150 bucks more expensive than the r9 285 and wouldnt be able to fit in the budget. Plus, it's more than you need in order to accomplish what this rig is aimed at.
@captdev
@captdev 9 жыл бұрын
muurf Hey, Firstly where on earth did you get $150 difference? Even in Canada, where Linus lives the difference is a negligible $40 comparing 2 MSI branded cards (on newegg). In the US the difference is even smaller, $10 comparing identical cards. Now if $40 is that important to you then sure, buy the R9 285x. But the 970 will perform better and by extension offer a smoother game experience. P.S. The R9 285x couldn't run WOW maxed out, and a bit of extra fps headroom is helpful. P.P.S I have been watching Linus for quite a long time now, and I know that if he was building a 4k Gaming pc he would NEVER USE A R9 285x :P
@muurf383
@muurf383 9 жыл бұрын
Captans KZbin Hi! First off, I just want to mention that anything I say is not meant to be interpreted as being in a sarcastic tone; I mean it seriously. First off, I don't think there's such thing as an r9 285x; it's just an r9 285. Second, the last time I checked, the gtx 970 is about 350 dollars, while on PCPartPicker.com, the r9 285 is only about 200 dollars. Where are you finding the gtx 970 for only 10 bucks more than the 285? The gtx 970 is obviously a much better graphics card but (at least from what i've seen), it's about 150 bucks more expensive. On top of that, once you buy a GPU like that, then you are probably going to want to spend extra on a core i5 or something. It wouldn't quite fit in this build.
@muurf383
@muurf383 9 жыл бұрын
Captans KZbin By the way: agreed. There is NO WAY linus would go with this setup for a regular 4k rig. But for what this computer's aimed at, I feel like it was a decent choice...

R9 285.... PFFF! I built my friend a rig with a 4460, and a Strix 970, in the same case (in white), with a 120GB Intel SSD, 1TB HDD, a Fully modular gold 650W PSU, a wifi/bluetooth card, and even a 2M NZXT LED Kit... All for less than $900.... You have to be patient and look at sales on /r/BuildAPCSales for like a week, and then not buy an OS, but it's totally fucking worth it. $900 for a build that's that fucking good at gaming, that good looking inside, and has that much functionality and general speed overall, is just insane.

Eric Slattery Are you fucking high? The 4K display would have had to be ~$190 to fit all that within $1000, at the lowest prices you can get all the parts right now. The display shown in the video is $1100 on it's own..
@MangoTangoFox
@MangoTangoFox 9 жыл бұрын
Eric Slattery 1. THE DISPLAY IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE $1000 PRICE. END OF STORY. I guarantee that it was not factored in when they made this. It could be accomplished with a lot of patience and market sense, but it's not at all what they had in mind. The build, parts only is $813 after rebates and such at the absolute lowest prices on part picker. Linus usually includes an OS, so you can add about another $100 onto that, leaving $87 left. How do you plan on fitting $400-700+, into $87? 2. I wasn't making any claims about fucking CPU. I just listed it because that's literally what we bought. The notable difference is the GPU, which is about 30-70% faster in real world gaming tests. It also has twice the vram to max out the textures in most games with basically no impact on framerate.

I can understand 4k gaming. But I think it's too early to be "mainstream." I can remember a time when 1280x1024 was an enthusiast resolution not meant for every day use. My weird ass monitor only goes to 1400x1050, and that's fine for me. Though I do want to upgrade my 650 ti SSC..

How does 4K have anything to do with monitor size?
@MaZEEZaM
@MaZEEZaM 9 жыл бұрын
Shaddy3Tears Yes, because the larger the screen the more resolution required to create a set standard of image, ie, an image res that looks great on a 24 inch monitor isnt going to look anywhere near as good on a 40 inch screen. So 4K scales the image far better the larger the monitor goes because it has far greater image quality to start with before its expanded to fit set monitor. Consider camera pixels, everyone knows a 2mp image looks pretty shit on a monitor, but if its a 8mp image it will look far better than the 2mp image on the same monitor.

***** Here: pcpartpicker.com/p/KN6YCJ CPU: Great for gaming, due to it's four cores. Overclockable so you still have that option open. If you don't want to overclock, just go for an i5 4690 instead of the 4690k. If you plan on overclocking, be sure to invest in a separate CPU cooler, because the stock ain't gonna cut it. Motherboard: 32GB of RAM support, 2-way SLI support, and it's BIOS is up to date with the new Haswell CPU. Great option. RAM: 8GB of Ram is the sweet spot for gaming. 16GB would be good if you are going to be streaming or video editing. With the RAM prices dropping, this is a good option. Storage: An SSD isn't necessary for a gaming build, but it sure as hell is great to have one. It loads your games that you have saved on it a lot faster than an HDD would. SSD prices are also dropping so yeah. I also threw in a 1 TB HDD for mass storage. GPU: Rule of Thumb for building a gaming PC. The GPU is almost always the most expensive item you're buying. The GTX 970 maxes out almost all games at 1080p60. And the MSI edition has a great cooler so yeah. If your games seem to be lacking, invest in another, because the motherboard we chose has SLI support eh? Case: BitFenix makes great cases and this one has front panel USB 3.0 ports. Nuff said. PSU: Never flake out on the PSU. 80+ Gold rating is great, and the wattage is enough for a second 970 when needed. If you want, throw in an optical drive, or add a mouse like the M45 from Corsair. Hope I helped you out and anyone else who is looking at this with the same problem! I may or may not have copied and pasted this from an earlier post on this same exact video...

The ONLY reason you think Intel is better is because intel advertises their overpriced crap everywhere, they pay magazines, and web articles to advertise their intel products as "better" when really they aren't.

***** omg you people are fucking idiots. PROCESSORS: they are the brains of the computer they process millions and billions of calculations to perform tasks, (for those of you who seem stupid and know nothing other than advertised claims) here is some fucking knowledge because i doubt ANY one of you "intel" fans thinking AMD sucks knows there is not much of a difference, you didnt take computer science like i did at the university. now that being said. ALL processors use the SAME material to be built. there is no "better" material it is all composed of silicone. they are not "better" over one another but practically the same but have their cores possibly lined up differently with billions of transistors made in the same way. however the ONLY difference is proprietary software technologies inputed into the CPU, they both have the same process in which they are built. intel may "seem" fast but i like to call that a placebo effect. lol really just because AMD is cheap doesnt mean its garbage, have you studied on something called MASS PRODUCTION?? this mass production is what would make the AMD prices MUCH more affordable than intel. This is why AMD wins me over. why am i going to pay $300 for an intel 4790K cpu when my fx8350 can outperform the intel by clockspeeds right out of the box for a fraction of the price?
@frx1p32dz2
@frx1p32dz2 8 жыл бұрын
***** that being said, its much like this. why the fuck would any TRUE sports car enthusiast, buy a $300,000 Lamborghini Aventador that ONLY pushes 500-600 horsepower, why spend that much on such little power? its a ridiculous price for that kind of power. while yes it may look good. I can go out and buy a Toyota Supra for $30,000 which is a fraction of that cost, dump another $25,000 into the engine adding big turbo, and some internals on that engine to produce 1200+ horsepower that will smoke that lamborghini anyday. want proof? check out TX2K shows this happening all the time. rich dudes in their lambos, and gt40s and vipers getting beat by supras and RX7s and skylines. AMD is the underdog, while yes cheap, they perform clockspeeds very well and can handle a good load. however intel may be "quick" its top end isnt that great. i mean $300 for 4.0GHz? come on. thats complete shit. if im goinng to spend $300 on a cpu i expect that shit to hit damn close to 5GHz speeds, and be very rapid on its latency.

Does this build take into account that the monitor will be very similar to the price of the computer build itself? Seriously places like Newegg hide the price of these monitors - saying things like "See Price in Cart". When I saw the price in cart, one of the cheaper 4 k monitors was a thousand dollars. I know people spend money, but man, 1 grand for a fucking screen though... At similar stores you could get an 60-70 in LED Samsung, vizio, sony, 120-240 hz smart tv's with wifi intigrated along with several streaming services for less than a grand.

Why on earth did you go with a 2gig GPU for a 4K setup? It might have worked with these games, but playing something like Skyrim with some mods will not work at all. And it's not that Skyrim is the newest and most demanding game, we're not talking about BF4 or something like that. Spend the extra 50 dollar on a R9 290 and, if you really have to, save that on some other components (case, smaller HDD etc.).
@dannunzio2958

Are you trolling or are you legitimately stupid? This build wasn't made to run modded Skyrim. It's for people that play Source games or MMOs or MOBAs and that want to play it at a high res.
@Haksdo2

Diego R I'm neither. Making a build that can run 4K fine, making it on a budget at which it can't run all triple A titles at 4K, understandable. But why limit yourself on one of the most crucial things for gaming at this resolution, GPU memory? Games wouldn't run worse if they'd chosen a Cooler Master N200 or Fractal Design Core 1100 case, games would have run just as well with a 1TB harddrive. But you'd be able to run more games at 4K with better performance, for the same total amount spend, if they'd went with a R9 290 4GB. Even keeping everything the same, but using a R9 280X would be better. That one costs the same as the R9 285, but outperforms it on 1080p gaming and has more headroom for 4K gaming due to its 3GB memory.

So I think you're looking at build guides the wrong way. It's not supposed to be "get EXACTLY what I'm telling you to get" it's supposed to act as a guideline and you should change things accordingly. For one person the 240GB SSDS is useless and maybe for another the 240GB is perfect. If this is EXCLUSIVELY gaming then yeah maybe 240GB is too much. It all depends on the person and their needs. His could also be used for slight content creation and 2TB HDD and 240GB SSD is exactly what they need
@Haksdo2
@Haksdo2 9 жыл бұрын
Diego R I agree on the "not exactly getting X or Y", but channels like this are a guideline for people who might not know all that much about building pc's. With that in mind, giving the "advice" that a 2GB card is a good investment for a 4K build is wrong imo, certainly if you can get a better performaning 3GB card for the same money. It's more that the R9 285 is a really weird buy at this point in time, any other AMD card in this pricerange would be a better pick; the R9 280 is almost on par but cheaper, a R9 280X is better in every regard and by investing a bit more and getting a R9 290 you'd be much better off. Sadly NVidia hasn't got any good options in this pricerange, with the GTX760 being a worse performer with the same 2GB issue and the GTX770 being way too expensive. Don't get me wrong, Linus makes awesome video's and overall this is a good build, just the GPU is a bit off.

1. why do you +1 your own comments? xD 2. if he did opt for a r9 290 he would needed to change the PSU aswell. and with your reasoning "oh since the 280x is better than the 280 just get the 280x but acually since the 290x is better just get the 290x" and at a certain point youre just better off waiting for the 300 series of cards or 400. i think the 285 is perfect for those games he mentioned (CSGO LoL, DOTA, TF2 etc) and the 285 is ITX so if someone doesnt have room for the R9 290 thats also a +

I built an entry level 4k machine the other day. Used my FX 8-core that I already had, running it at 4.1ghz, 16GB ram, 250GB SSD, 1TB mass, and an off the shelf motherboard... The expensive parts were the monitor and gpu. I ended up going with a 42" UHD TV at 60hz and a GTX 980 TI G1. Those two things alone cost almost 1,500 bucks. ;) Sooo... 2000+ for the whole system.

I've an older I7 machine form the 2008 time frame. I recently added a GTX 970 to replace a well built but long in the tooth GTX 570. I used the 570 in a cheap AMD build that has a new PSU & an 8 core AMD processor. I was really surprised at the increases in usability of my old PC with a new GPU. While I don't play many games & did notice a huge increase in usability of this 4 generations old CPU (860). So as you stated folks don't always need 2000 dollars worth of GPU's & a 1000 CPU with tons of memory to have a great gaming as well as PC use experience. I game and view on some old 60 HZ 1080 24" monitors. The only other upgrade I see in the near future would be a better & bigger monitor. LOL Enjoy the vids & thanks for the info.

I'm not sure lowering the rez is that relevant anymore in competitive CSGO etc. Back in the day you had to lower the rez because it got you a higher refresh rate (CRT monitors were limited in that regard). It also got you more FPS so that you could actually utilize that refresh rate. These days that's not a relevant argument honestly, with games like CSGO running at 300fps on many systems at any resoultion. I think some "pro" gamers just lower the res because they heard it's what the cool kids do, rather than understanding the original reason for it. Yeah, sure, you get funny pixel artifacts at long distances /w low resolution, but I seen many very capable players that prefer the high resolutions; especially if looking for things at longer distances.

If you have $3000 to spend on a 4K PC, what are you buying????? I am looking to purchase a top of the line (or close) 4K Gaming PC, because I don't know how to build one myself. So far I was looking at the ORIGIN's and Alienware's AREA-51. Preferably, I would want more than 2560 x 1440p. Maybe 3840 x 2160 @120Hz? Is it better to own a DUAL GeForce GTX 980? Or just 1 GeForce GTX TITAN X? I also want a 4K Gaming monitor that is ultra-wide and curved. Not even sure if they make them yet because I cannot find one. I keep finding regular 4K 17-34", or a regular 1080p Ultra wide/Curved, but not a curved 4K. What's up with that? I know they will run a couple Gs, but still... The reason why I want a wide/curved is because I don't want to run 3 monitors. But anyways, PLEASE, ANYONE who knows PCs respond.. I am really getting sick of my XboxONE and PS4. I need my Ultra HD in my life.. Thank you so much guys.... EDIT: Please don't make fun of me for not knowing how to build my own gaming pc.. I didn't have the resources growing up to know how to do these type of things..

- Gamericious - You won't find 4k at 120hz because it doesn't exist yet. Building your own PC only takes a few research in Tomshardware forum and Linus, if you're smart enough to Google components, you'll build1. Don't get Titan X, its just a overpriced card for those who just want the most expensive card. 390x is gonna be released next month, and its faster than Titan X and costs less.

Intel or Nvidia sponsors a video, not a single fuck given that day. AMD sponsors a video? Shit-storm brews in the comments section LOL! For those who don't seem to understand how this all works, if Nvidia proposed the same thing, Linus would've done it, and used one of their cards that fit within the budget. AMD fanboys have my respect today, since at least they never seem to have their fist shoved up their own ass as much as the Nvidia fanboys. Shop for products with the highest performance that will fit your budget, not by brand.
