To me as an average guy and heavy equipment mechanic i could relate to Colt a lot. He worked out of a home garage, outside in the weather, explained why and how he did everything, and you could tell he was down to earth.

I completely enjoyed this series and I am a fan of all three competitor groups. Colt was the only one who built a vehicle that could do well on UA. Nate built a very cool overlander vehicle with not enough ground clearance, and Rudy built an excellent all around trail / overland rig which was too large for narrow rock crawling trails. Colt really wanted this and it was clear he put heart and soul into this build to win it. I believe that S10 will do very well on UA. It can handle just about anything you throw at it. Well done!

cool wrap-up / explanation video. i thought right from the beginning that rudy just wanted to build something cool and could care less about UA. Colt built a perfect rig for it. big tires, big axles, leaf springs and storage space.

At the end of the day Nate has already been on UA, Dave will be there either way as an old cronie. Fred Williams was actually campaigning to not vote for Nate and Dave because of this. Im glad that Colt and Matt made the final cut. Nate started with Bleeping Jeep years ago, but theyre just good ol boys working out of their garages. It shows folks that you can build a rig in your garage to go on amazing off-road adventures.

As someone who remembers the early U.A.s before U-tube. This was interesting, but I'm jaded. All of them built great rigs. I knew Rudy's was over the top on the budget and figured many would be playing loose with it, too. I'm glad to see new blood involved joining. Cole is a under dog entry and deserves it starting with an S10. His project truck can possibly keep it real, showing you don't need a mega bucks build to enjoy it.

I saw similar comments regarding next year, I think all competitors should start with the same vehicle or as close as possible. Each team are great fabricators. But if they all start with the same vehicle it would be interesting to watch them build in their own unique way.

Rudy took on a HARD build. Mopars are not cheap. Cars or trucks. The S10 love it. Good example of what u can do with a gm. Next year try something like a Tahoe SUV type build. Great series.

I felt everyone of the budgets were about as fair as you could possibly make. In all reality they had more money into each rig than what was settled for final budget, but the way you set up the negotiations throughout the team members is exactly how this competition should have been handled, boots on the ground so to speak with each competitor with skin in the game deciding how everything should be priced. Great stuff OnX and Ian! Excited for next season!

I enjoyed watching this series across all the channels! It is interesting that two of the teams started with cheap vehicles and spent a lot building them and one team started with a higher priced rig and did minimal work. Maybe a twist for next year would be to assign an overall budget but break that down into a vehicle cost and build cost. Have one team with a low buy and high build budget, one with an even split, and one with a high buy and low build budget. Start the series off by having the teams randomly draw to see which category they get.

Had you do a activity to show your knowledge and ability to work as a team. Please keep it light hearted next time with the challenges. The riggs are very serious the games don't have to be. I would also like to see maybe a wild card of some kind next time. Like a school or group of kids that get a bigger budget but have less experience.

I would add doing a tire change in a trail situation that they would run into in like a rock field, where they cannot move the vehicle to a flat surface. That would represent a real world situation that could happen while on UA. Great series all around. I would have liked to see more challenges and a few more videos covering the builds and challenges.

Ok, I loved the concept and I loved the end product. Next year, build budget same. Contestants have to buy a shopping cart,a Mazda 2 Toyota Corolla a small front wheel drive hatch and turn it into a UA capable unit. Initial Contestants should be chosen by KZbin audience. So maybe not the same three from 2023 teams. Once the Moab rim part of the challenge is complete these contestants will be reduced to the Three who get to build. I could go on but having 5-6 contenders at the first challenge would push it to the next level, with possible relegation at the first day.
@captainm7155

The series was great. I enjoyed it all. While I know the people who have great KZbin channels bring extra viewership with them, I would like to see possibly another team or two who might be unknown people who are up for a good challenge. Their builds could still be documented on KZbin. It would be like the readers rides they have done in the past, but they would have to build a vehicle to compete under the same time line and budget constrains. Again, nice job, and I look forward to whatever you come up with for next year.

Hey, Ian. A thought that I had about the future of these OnX challenges is that it would be that it would be pretty neat to have a well known builder or channel team up with somebody that isn’t well known and have them work together to complete a rig or project that has been started, but hasn’t been finished. The end goal obviously of trying to get into UA. Like, for instance, I have a International Scout II that would be at home on UA once it’s done, but I don’t think that I would ever get the opportunity to go under normal circumstances. It might be a good way for someone who wouldn’t normally go to have a better chance and showcase some talented builders who no one would know otherwise.

I first want to say Great Job Ian, ON-X, and especially the film crew. I can only imagine how tough it was filming while walking/climbing up those trails multiple times to film each vehicle. The On-X off road challenge was very entertaining to watch. You could see pretty early on how much experience each team had building custom vehicles was a huge factor of staying on budget, or Not. Rudy struggled a little with this part of the challenge. I do wonder if the cost of the Ram charger would have been any different if Holly had been a part of the build the entire time? (Not that we don’t ALL go over budget on every build. 😂) The last trail was a little more brutal than those 3 Rigs were built for, in my opinion. I do understand, it was a “TV” show at the end of the day and anytime you’re out 4-wheelin you better expect that some damage is going to happen. If you can’t accept that you best head back to the pavement.

I enjoyed the series, and the videos by the competitors. Good rules in general. I think it is odd that someone can make a good buy on let's say facebook marketplace, and then that good buy is erased, because the competitors found it for more. If someone makes a legitimate buy on ebay or facebook marketplace, craig's list, etc., that shouldn't be erased. The right team won, so there is that. The S10 was the most capable and the least expensive. I was blown away that relatively experienced off-roaders chose vehicles where the body was the same width as the tires. This is an obvious recipe for body damage, which both rigs got. Maybe that works in the sand or the snow, but not on tough trails. You and your team did a great job capturing the events. Another rule to entertain. Every dollar under the budget is a vote. Every dollar over the budget is a subtracted vote. Rudy didn't take the budget seriously, because ultimately there was no penalty for going over.

I have been thinking of next year, and I think that the vehicles should be sourced for them to eliminate a competitor from receiving a head start on a "discounted" vehicle. I agree that oddball vehicles should be used such as minivans, coupes or sedans that can be put on a frame. Give them all a 1989 Dodge Caravan with the fake wood panel on the side. Also, more teams! Five or six would be great. I know that the sponsors want audience participation, but scale down the points from audience to avoid unfair popularity contests yet still reward popular builds. Have each competitor give required points to the other teams. To avoid UA having to deal with a poor result, have the performance of the vehicle skew higher compared to other things such as votes or competitions. Loved this and want to see it get better every year. Great jobs by everyone involved.

Great competition and all the builds! As for a new competition in my opinion it would be awesome to see a competition that was a little more strict, for instance set a limit on the year of the truck/SUV and have it be all brand new parts and accessories. Nothing used or already owned. Another thing that would be great would be to let people vote that don't have a subscription! That was a very limited factor in the last competition. And lastly have a specific tire size every competitor can't go over! Say no larger than 37s so the obstacles are equally challenging for all competitors. Thank you everyone that was involved in the last competition it was very entertaining and I hope to see another!

First of all, well done Ian, as clearly you and crew have put a lot of thought into this and relateable to someone flagging dwindling wages in a shop! Though, the format is close, and vehicle builds spectacular; very generally think you are close, but slightly off. Since full disclosure posits $$$ is the arterial blood in said projects, set a buy-in @ 35 large and have all start from scratch, w/ build monitored in similar fashion. Remember Pederen's Mag days, it was 'built-not-bought'; though, any struggler knows these rear-steer crawlers are more like 120 large!

My only complaint about the whole show was the way you had to sign up for OnX, not financially but close, to vote. I voted one time because I was not going to sign up for a service I can't afford and don't need. I am too old, too poor and I don't own a vehicle I can tear up to go off roading. I used to, but it was much more an adventure then. No cell phones, no off road maps. Just topographical maps, a compass, a cb radio and acquired knowledge. Much safer now with GMRS. satellite phones and cell phones.

Now being from SoCal with a lot of Toyota fans as friends, this was by far the most interesting build for the use of stock parts. I’d say the vehicle is something most people could build in the garage minus the body work. Cut fender wells and front grill for more clearance is not a skill level the average home builder has.

I think the whole series was great and each builder did a really good job. Colt earned the win, can’t complain with how he did/what he built besides the obvious “bleepinjeep” not building a bleepinjeep! Nate did the opposite of your mistake by bringing an overlander to a buggy course (I believe you mentioned in a video about a UA where you brought a race Jeep on a overland trip). Rudy and Janelle stepped up big time and built damn near a race truck on a light beer budget. (Is that kid really only 23 building rigs like that?!?!) missed Holly big time. If you are free next August Ian, my club would love to host you out in Cali for Sierra Trek on Fordyce Trail.

Hi Ian. Big fan of yours ever since Extreme (280 lbs). I was in the Army when they were phasing out the gama goat m561 in the 80s. The S10 build of Colt and Matt brought back an idea that has gone through my head for a few decades and I'd love to hear your input. An off-road truck that rotates between the cab and the bed. Use some type of embedded rotating rings similar to a gun turret that the driveshaft passes through the center of a carrier bearing or maybe the t-case is mounted in the rings. It would give an unlimited amount of articulation. It would probably be a one trick pony where articulation is a must such as low speed rock crawling, but would definitely be unique. Thoughts?

I would have liked to see more offroad/vehicle challenges rather than silly games. I wouldnt consider a camp set-up race, or the "one hand tied up" challenge really being related to UA. I think things like winching/self recovery of your vehicle up an obstacle with the engine off (engine died/blew up) changing a flat tire while on an obstacle (debead/ripped sidewall), maybe points for how easily it is to source/replace a certain failed engine or drivetrain component. Things that actually are real world challenges while on UA.

@@BigTireGarage I agree setting up camp at night or in the rain isn't fun, I've done both, and both together lol. But I don't think that's a good representation of a "who deserves to win the spot of going on UA" type of skill. The other things I mentioned are more make it or break it type challenges. In my experience with wheeling trips, camp set up is an inconvenience, not a challenge.

Maybe not these particular rules, but I would like to have seen some nascar-ish type limiting rules instead of such a tight budget. Something like, tires 37s or less. No Coil overs. Again, maybe not those particular rules, but you can see how limits on tire size and suspension type would force the budget lower all by themselves. Just an idea.

Absolutely loved the series! I thought the $15,000 budget was a little low. I think that the participants should have had to produce receipts for what they spent on whatever parts they bought. For example, call said he bought a set of used springs for $150, but the group assessed him a higher value on those parts. If you could have produced a receipt that would’ve ended that argument. I would like to see all participants produce receipts for the actual purchases. For the next onyx, off-road adventure, I would like to see you guys go to New England. I know finding places to go for wheeling there is difficult, but not impossible. We always see Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, California, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and so on. How about New England or New York State?

Ian, can I ask you a question that has nothing to do with this video? I had a crazy thought, I have an 84 K2500 longbed chevy that needs some love. In an effort to do something different I am toying with the idea of lowering the motor and moving it back. I realize it will take a ton of fab, my question is will the juice be worth the squeeze? It is destined to be a car show queen and occasional off roading rig. Bigblock and t400, 14 bolt with dana 60 up front.

Have them build the same platform, Something popular but cheap for beginners, xj, wrangler maybe 4Runner. All get identical or really close to identical ones, vehicle price not included in the budget. Or just do same challenge as this one, thought it was good challenge and voting and competition stuff always gets people upset, I don’t really care just like to see the builds but I understand the reasoning behind it.

Love the challenger and challenges, but damn that last challenge killed the ram charger body and hp killed the rear axle. The ram was the best looking and had most people votes with the overall build. Lots of thought and planning. Too bad holly was not able to help with the build, glad to see Rudy’s gf step in to help.

Maybe next year, keep the “Budget” build theme but make it where they ONLY get to use the Elite Partners for the build parts. Also, maybe don’t do teams. Seems like the “teams” part fell apart for a couple of them. Also, not count the cost of the rig but it cant cost more than a certain amount ($5000.00 or so). So someone doesn’t go and buy a straight up rock crawler buggy or something.

One rule I like is if you’re caught cheating a price, such as “used leaf springs” that are new, you’re charged 2x the actual price. Your tires are “used” for $500 are actually new, 2x actual price. Can also be done for just putting wrong prices. Like if you put a price more than 50% lower than actual maybe actual price + the price they put. More incentive for people to be truthful.
