Suggestion for installing the ball joint. If you put dry ice in alcohol and then submerge the ball joint in the mix and wait for it to stop boiling then it will be about -200 degrees. Not as cold as liquid nitrogen but a whole lot more accessible and a bit cheaper.

Replaced the factory ball joints on an 06 Ram 2500 with Dynatrac joints many years ago before I had my shop. Did in the the driveway and boy did it kick my butt. After watching you having difficulty with the install I don't feel quite as bad. The factory's were shot at 50k and the truck now has over 300k all of which has been on 37s and still no play to speak off. I don't know that I am ever going to get to try out the rebuild feature.

TL;DR: you need the nylon piece. The nylon part in a ball joint is nylon because it is not load bearing. If you are putting load above the small preload that it generates on the nylon upon installation, that means your are bending the c’s. This is why most cars have a telescoping upper ball joint. This application uses a nylon insert to crush to account for the tolerance stack up of the c’s and knuckles. If you were to manufacture a knuckle that precision matches up with the c, it would be costly. A ball and socket is actually stronger than the uniball. The ball and socket distributes the load over a larger surface area meaning it takes more force to yield the material. However, as previously stated, the nylon piece allows axial compliance, and the ball is not actually touching on all sides, and is in a line-load scenario meaning the outer circumference of the ball is the only part in contact, meaning that in this specific use case, the uniball has an advantage in that it actually has more surface area. However, the majority of ball joint upgrades ignore a extremely important fact. They all overconstrain the axle’s c. If you don’t have the nylon piece, you are bending your c’s when you install the knuckle because there is not axial any compliance in the assembly. Axles are designed with manufacturing tolerances embedded in the design with correct degrees of freedom such that parts fit together. If the knuckle is too tall it won’t fit, so it’s made shorter and the upper ball joint has compliance in the axial direction such that it can be assembled. When you don’t have this compliance, you are putting the c’s in a loading scenario they were never designed for. They are designed for bending loads, and when you add in compression and bending together, it results in a second order moment which is a fairly different use case compared to their original design intent and could lead to early failure. You are basically trading a small amount of surface area in the ball joint for over constraining the c in compression. A actual fix to the root cause would be to stop the c’s from flexing which would cause the nylon piece to stop failing. That’s the root cause. Upgraded ball joints are a band aid.

Ian, I have a project I want built. Coming from Canada, you'll understand it. I have a 66 chevy C60 cab and hood and fenders. I want to 4 wheel drive it. Behind the cab will go a logging grapple and stablizing legs. This on the rear of the frame. Also, a headache rack has to be built for the grapple. I figured a diesel with an allison transmission. What axles and transfercase, would you recommend ? This will be used to pull a trailer of logs.

I have a 67 that I'm doing a new frame on and want to see more about how and what you are doing ? Please show more of that project? And are there other places that you are showing that project that I can go to follow it? I'm going to use a 4 BT NV4500/205 with 60s. What are your opinions on shortening them to avoid the roller skate tires out of the fender look ? I'm going with 35 BFGs. Any ideas or advice is always welcome please sir? Keep the great content coming please. Wish we could see more.

Q&A Question. Seems like the topic of Coilovers Vs ORI struts is about as controversial as the tire brand debate. I know vehicle type and use obviously make all the difference but that being said what are your thoughts on running ORIs vs coilovers on a mainly east coast wheeling Jeep? Especially seeing them on rigs at KOH, will you ever use ORI or have you in the past? Thanks!!!

I discussed this with a few welder friends, but then saw this. No pre-heat for the cast steel knuckles prior to welding? Due to the thickness difference, I've been told preheating is necessary. Artec agrees. Yes, I've welded cast iron and steel to mild. Just asking another welder.

I have done it both ways TBH....with a multiple pass I am essentially preheating it with the initial pass.....the cover then eats in really well to the cast

Q1: No lube for Knuckle holes or ball joint when pressing back in? heat is better? Q2: When welding those knuckle extentions, your going from plate steel to a casted stock knuckle? If so, would the heat be totally different for each material? When i tried to MIG a crack shut on a casted exhaust manifold it just kept eating wire, looked like it was just melting into the casting. Cool Show! I watch religiously, your shop would be a dream! Subscribed and Belled. #thumbsup
@BigTireGarage
@BigTireGarage Жыл бұрын
There really isn't any place for Lube.....the original ball joints had some striation reliefs cut into them...the Dynatracs do not. An exhaust manifold is made from Cast Iron.....knuckles are made from Cast Steel....two very different materials. you have to know what you are welding before you start welding

I need to set up my alignment and stuff soon running 37s with a dana 60 and hydro assist on a cherokee. I did a little bit of googling a while ago and im pretty sure that i came up with an 1/8th of toe in is the normal? Ive always done a little toe in i think.
