I have a 2006 630i with the N52. It's currently on 73k miles serviced annually. I took the solenoids out for a clean but they were pretty much spotless, no crud, no deposits. Also had a look at the vanos filters , they were the same very clean. So yes I guess regular servicing will reduce the chances of vanos related problems. And thanks to your videos its a pretty easy piece of preventative maintenance. 🙏

Another great video George. Have a look at two products for the engine that is using oil. Firstly XADO, a product that rebuilds the internals of the engine in its various forms and secondly, Mannol's Ceramo engine oil additive. I use Mannol Extreme 5W40 in my VW engine and its very good indeed.

Hey, good video George. Cleaned the vanos solenoids on my N53 with just over 120,000 miles on them. Must say that they were in very good condition. I did connect each one to a 9 volt battery while spraying them down and quite a bit of black stuff came out. Once they were clicking freely I re installed them and cold start issues seemed to clear up. Plus I cleaned the vanos filters as well and they also weren't too bad. Just a bit of a swine to remove and reinstall. Shaking the filters should tell you that they need a good clean if they don't rattle and mine were definitely clogging up inside. Think you did a video on those filters. A lot of people don't know they exist lol. You've got to keep on top of those oil changes.

Are the Vanos filters located in the same location as N52, I do have N53 E63, and if yes how did you have access to them? I can't see them at all!

Regular oil changes are even more important if you do loads of short journeys.

They are cheap enough now that replacing the exhaust side makes sense or even both. The exhaust side tends to fail more often due to heat. Cleaning them doesn't work because the heat brings the issue back.

George is right, as long as you are changing your oil regularly, you should be good. Also the valve seals get rock hard because of the craziness with the thermostat that BMW did which allows the engine to run over 110 C on low load city driving. I'd like to see how much blue smoke comes out during a cold start to see how those seals are holding up.

If you have just brought your car I would just put new one in anyway, then clean them every year, and I would swap them every 6 years, but it depends on how long you want to keep your car I guess, that way it rules out any issues you may be having or get in the future.

If you don’t clean the filters, they wont get the proper fluid volume regardless of how squeaky clean or new they happen to be.

I see some people use 9V batteries to 'activate' those vanos to clean further. Would you recommend that?

They are cheap enough to justify replacing them and the fuel economy impact is enough to get the money back.

Yes. Use the 9v battery to open and close the the part while your clean it.

I changed the vanos solenoid seals on my E90 (N46) and now the car runs like shiiit (stalls continuously, shakes on idle), plus I have codes P0012 and P0015. What do you think could cause that?
@GeorgeAusters

You probably have a vacuum leak.. do a smoke test

@@GeorgeAusters Thanks, you were right about that, I found a cable clamp that must have come loose when I was working on the solenoids. I tightened it up and the car drives much better now. I still have the P0012 code though and it stalls sometimes so I'm thinking maybe I should clean the solenoids.

@@GeorgeAusters It turned out that I hadn't pushed the solenoids in far enough. I think the new o ring was a bit too dry and was stopping it from going in all the way.

Does your N52 use oil? Mines not great, I’ve replaced the CCV
@brarautorepairs
@brarautorepairs 2 жыл бұрын
I was using 1 liter of oil for every 1000 km of high-speed driving. It was considered normal. Still make sure you have no leaks, try using a heavier weight oil and ensure your cooling system is working properly. These engines will turn all gaskets into plastic from rubber with heat. A small leak will quickly add up. Even the oil cap leaks on these cars. You won't even notice this. The updated part is a different oil cap.

Almost useless without disassembly. The space that gets clogged is too tight to be properly cleaned this way, why is everyone so lazy - taking solenoid apart is 1 minute job!

G this is particular info is poor! Sorry m8 - you can see how good vanos solenoid are by just looking? Noooo way! Can you make a video with a 9v battery and leads to the solenoid to show the play in the worn out one - that’s how you test them! Not by looking - OEM ones Win hands down in my experience they last 50K max - waiting for some new ones right now - make and update and give me a shout in the updated vid m8 - cheers
