Longer answer: as the patty sizzles against the hot burning rock above the fire makes the patty get more and more cooked thus making it not raw so it is safe for human consumption

Retired rescue ranger here. Fat wood can be found after a tree dies. The sap drains down into the lower stump area of a tree. Much like “ bleeding out “ it all packs down into the lower area of the stump. Not so with a live tree.
