When we were kids, my brothers and I attached a refrigerator box and a washer and dyer box to make a house with rooms and windows. Our dad helped us cover it with plastic to make it water proof and we would go out in it in the rain. It was one of many of my fondest childhood memories. Our cardboard “house” lasted us for almost an entire summer before it finally gave in to the elements. I think of that often with a smile 😊

I remember doing the same thing. Me and some childhood friends would go down the street to the alley way behind the Sears appliance store and get the refrigerator boxes and put them together and cut a door way between the boxes and cut the holes in a way to cover the gap between we even used a car battery and a 12v dome light from an old car and used carpet from the carpet store next to the Sears it was a very awesome childhood experience.

@@ASBO_LUTELY I am referring to cardboard boxes big ones that a whole house refrigerator comes in they are one big piece of cardboard wrapped around the refrigerator with one seam glued together vertical from the ground to the top of the refrigerator box and there is a top and bottom cardboard cap that connects with a plastic strap wrapped around the flaps to hold it on the top and one to hold it on the bottom you take off the bottom plastic strap and lift the box up off of the top of the refrigerator and then you take the cardboard box and you lay it on the side and reattach the bottom end wrapping duct tape around where the plastic strap was because you cannot reuse that plastic strap too easily. This is pretty detailed let me know if you need better description.

Might want to start taking vitamin D. I've always had insomnia and recently learned vitamin D helps. It does! I'm sleeping at night. Give it a try and see how you do. Sorry about the nightmares. Perhaps they may stop also.

@@patriciacerwin6266and magnesium taken just before bed. Not magnesium oxide though as it’s poorly absorbed by the body. I take magnesium citrate in powder form from Holland and Barrett. I also take Vit D & K2 combined. 4,000 IU once a day through the winter months. Getting out in the morning helps too as the light helps our circadian rhythm and melatonin.

Remember my papaw building a foundation out in the woods. Just a random cement block, bout 10x10. He said it was for a new deer stand he was gonna make. Little did we know, it wasnt. He made it for us, to build on...whatever we wanted. We made a cardboard fort out of 5 giant pieces that we folded/cut/taped. He covered it in tar paper (he was a roofer so we had a lot), and then put some old partly busted siding on it. We put a simple frame on the inside out 1x1's, and it lasted us a little over a year before we cleaned it up and built a real fort out of solid wood. My papaw passed away since then, and i havent thought about that for a few months. Thank you for helping me remember. He was the greatest man i ever knew, and was a father figure for me when i needed it even tho he shouldnt of had to be. I am a man because of him, and im also happy because of him. RIP yuh ol bastard, we couldnt miss you more than we already do.

I live in Christchurch New Zealand . After the earthquakes destroyed much of our city we were very lucky to get a cardboard Cathedral designed by an amazing Japanese man who has done other cardboard structures . The cardboard Cathedral doesnt leak and its still being used every day !!

Growing up (I'm 63), we had a neighbour who's dad worked with new tractors and he brought home this really big cardboard box, it was really really thick and us kids used it as a fort, tent etc etc............... After a few months it finally succumbed to the weather. I have so many warm memories from sharing fun times with my local neighbourhood friends simply from playing inside a cardboard box lol.

As someone that spent many years sleeping in cardboard boxes I can confirm that they are awesome for insulation. If you spray the interior and exterior with beeswax they can last several months in moist conditions.

When I was a teenager and my parent died, I was out in the streets in -40C yes - it was that cold. I hundred under cardboard on top of street vents and stayed alive without losing any part of my fingers or toes, during the day I would find a washroom and dry my clothes. Those 2 months saved my life. I always looked for cardboard

Give it a lift off the ground a few inches and a few plastic 30 gallon yard trash bags taped on from bottom to top or a couple cans of spray paint or some wax, even spray wax used for cooking ! For an extended stay use something to waterproof it to include the spray plastic that seals waterpipe leaks to seal where the pieces come together !

Cardboard is a great insulator. On a forest fire back in the 90’s my issue tent was destroyed, it would be a few days before the got more so I made my own shelter using shipping boxes for the Hand tools. I used duct tape, 3 mil plastic trash bags (rain fly, and ground cloth) and para cord to hold it together, along with wooden pegs I made from sticks. Lived in it for the remainder of that fire, about three weeks. It was surprisingly comfortable.

I wonder, how helpfull trash bags can be combined with cardboard. My idea would be flatten them and perhaps ducktape them to the top or corners of your tent. Most trash bags, if plastic, can deflect water. So in my theory, you would get less contact with moisture, if you apply them right. Just a theory.

Hello Andy! To use this tent without disappointment, you must take four precautions: - Before setting up your tent, place a rope taut between two trees, but three feet above the highest point of the tent. - Then place a tarp stretched over this rope, forming two roofs that will not touch the roof of the tent at any point. - A second canvas, a little bigger than the floor of the tent, should be placed on the ground, under the tent. It will serve to prevent the absorption of moisture by the cardboard on the tent floor. - It will also be important to make a small drain around the area protected by the larger canvas, to prevent the water coming from the roof from trying to go under the tent. I am Brazilian and I often go camping in the Amazon rainforest. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us. By the way, your cooking equipment is to be envied!

I've watched a good number of these videos. From reading the comments i agree that getting tips on camping is one result. But these videos serve another truly fine purpose. A result is anxiety and depression are lessened for many of us. And so frequent are childhood memories brought back of simpler times. I feel sorry for today's youth whose time is spent staring at a device. Whose car trips require a movie to get through. Yes I'm elderly and find the past is better in some ways than my present. If that tent had a groundsheet underneath and a tarp above it, it probably would have stood up to the rain much better. It seems like a great idea for housing for people who have been impacted natural disasters. I live in Japan and we often have typhoons or earthquakes. People are forced to live in evacuation shelters, all crowded in together, and these tents offer some privacy. The Japanese architect Shigeru Ban is famous for designing shelters using cardboard although he usually uses cardboard tubes.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. A ground sheet, taped to the cardboard on the sides, with a tarp over the whole thing, one long enough to hang down over both ends. You could even hold up the tarp in front for ventilation and a sheltered entrance.

Great aren't they ? I live in Holland ... A lot of folks put a piece of plastic over the top once it's set up ! That way you'll keep dry even longer ! After all , it is CARTON ! And exposed to hard rain for a long time , it'll turn to mush . But overall , you held out well . Next time , try the plastic layer on top ! You get to spend 3 to 4 nights in this tent ! 👍👍👍 Thanks for uploading and sharing !!! ❤

This brings back memories of my younger days . A gang of us 9 to 15 year old s all went camping the older lads had the bright idea of building a cardboard box tent . We tacted it together with parcel tape chewing gum and string lol it was water proofed with axle grease it didn't leak but smelt a bit ....ah the good old days .

When I was young we used tarpaper as my dad had a construction company and gave us lots. Had to build a pole frame but was water proof. Smelled as well. We used a lot of thumb tacks. I still carry a match box full of thumb tacks to this day on my outings. Yup those where great days.

As a younger guy I used some of that foam board let’s put a new home construction. It’s silver on the outside and has fairly dense foam possibly fiberglass inside it’s about an inch thick was really easy to cut into shape and then you just use duct tape the silver kind or whatever you got to put it all together and it’s actually waterproof and gives a pretty good insulation value. The stuff is pretty lightweight for its thickness in size. Unfortunately, unless you could get some of that for free like I did back in the day construction materials have gone up in price dramatically. Recently saw that you could buy solar panels for less than the cost of plywood. One guy actually use solar panels and siding on his shed and then hook them into a charge controller and battery bank. Love the idea of using salvage materials to build 😅

This was an interesting video away from the norm. I am a 79 year old former Royal Marine and lived out doors in many a Country, including Jungle, Desert and Jebels. I thought that the Cardboard Tent was an excellent idea. If the conditions had not been so extreme (heavy rain) I would imagine it would last a lot longer. I wondered why they had not covered it with some waterproof coating but then I realised they want these Tents for short term life and use, as you said. This will increase the Sales by a large margin. When I was a kid in the 60's a group of us made a fabulous camp. There were a few deep indents in the locals woods. We thought they might have been from bombs during WW2. We put a long log across the criss crossed with fallen sticks. Then we pulled up loads of wheat from the field next to the woods and strewed it across to make a thatched roof. We put a rug inside and some of our comics. we were as snug as anythibg when it rained! Happy days!

I remember as a kid probably 21 years ago now, my dad brought home this massive octagonal box that was used to hold styrofoam containers for cheeses at his work. It was really thick cardboard. Anyway I made a doorway in the side of it and for 2 weeks I slept in that box every night, even in rain. Although the roof started to cave in a bit (but it still held) the inside stayed completely dry. I'm sure I could've stayed in it a bit longer provided there wasn't much more rain, but the school holidays were finishing and the vanity wore off. :P Good memories! Actually I remember he brought home another of those boxes and put it on the deck, and I stayed in it for 40 hours as part of a charity thing while fasting. Except I failed that challenge when my dad started taunting me with pork ribs...

Im 50yrs old and as a kid I remember making forts out of cardboard boxes. Mind you, I lived in the northeast and the winters would be brutal and yet, our forts, through wind, rain and snow, would never break down. They were actually warm too. Heck, I even recall two incidents where my friends and I went in and found homeless people living in them because they were warm as we were told 😂. Sadly, the only element that our cardboard box forts could never beat were the human elements. They would destroy everything we had built and made our own. Yeah, those were some good times. Hi, Andy. Watche'd you just now, and I give you kudos for coming up with a cardboard tent to feature. Haven't seen anybody else on KZbin do so. I like that you are willing to try different and unusual things. Sometimes it is a no-go, like the eggy-hashbrown muffin cups, but is always fun. These cardboard shelters would work here in dry (mostly) Arizona desert, perhaps as temporary shelter for the homeless. And fun for kids. When we were kids we built a castle made from refrigerator and stove cardboard boxes. I am 75 now, and still remember the fun we had.

Thank you for making this video. As a kid, my dad collected cardboard and made compressed logs for factories to fire their boilers with. Many a fort was constructed out of the various types of cardboard we had. Some of it was surprisingly water resistant. Some of it wasn't. This would be great in the winter. Cardboard is a great insulator given the baffles in between the sheets of cardboard. Three layers of it is also great to sleep on during the cold on dirt, rock, concrete, metal; ect because if you don’t have anything to lay on the cold will eat right through your sleeping bag. Another way I used to insulate when I was homeless was put up my cheap one person tent and throw blankets over the top of the tent then string up a tarp so they would never get wet. Having the bottom of the tent insulated with three layers of cardboard inside and then a blanket on top of it to lay on. It would be 32F outside and I would stay warm inside there just in a hoody. Also if you do get a one person tent I recommend getting a roof height in the tent that’s tall enough for you to sit up straight inside the tent so you don’t have to strain your neck while just sitting. But yeah, using the cardboard tent in this video would be amazing for homeless persons in cold weather if they also put up a tarp so it wouldn’t get wet and to protect it from the sun so extend the life of the cardboard tent. And no one is going to steal a cardboard structure from them.

Sadly the municipality in most areas will definitely steal these and destroy them. Insects would love them and humidity would deteriorate them. The corrugated plastic ones of the same style are lighter can be made mobile and stand up much longer.

I never would have thought that a cardboard tent would have held up as well as it did. That is a cool little cooking set up. We use what is called a cool cell to help cool our poultry houses. They are cardboard covered with something but they last for years with water running over them 10 hours a day.

Waxed cardboard is surprisingly resilient and weather resistant. Used to use waxed heavy duty cardboard boxes as sleds, when i was a kid. Could use those for weeks, and they just held up.

A good oversized canvas tarp would really do the job, especially if a grand tarp was put down under it. A coat of sprayed on polyurethane would help the cardboard tent too to last longer. It might last even longer

I think this item could be highly useful for many short-term use purposes if it is wrapped inside of a large tarp or a large piece of plastic sheeting. It would gain protection from water, ice, or snow, and it would be a bit better insulated. Set it on top of a tarp covered wooden pallet, and it would be even better. Thanks for making this video!

Most festivals have clean up squads who tidy up, salvage as much as possible and mend tents to go to homeless people and others in nerd. I was shocked to learn that wet cardboard is NOT recycled. Apparently it gums up the machines so all wet/srained/damaged cardboard goes to landfill

Actually the present situation does benefit people in need, as tents discarded at festivals are now usually packed up & collected by volunteers, to send to disaster areas for use as emergency shelter.
