We have a 1985 Mercedes 300d turbo diesel that my brother bought for only $800. He cut 3-4 cools off of his springs, and he has been daily driving it for about 2 years. He's never had issues with it coming out of place, although speed bumps are too tall to go over speed bumps fast, but that goes for any lowered car.

Why add all the pretend reactions to a "rough" ride? There's no way you noticed a major difference. OEM springs with one coil gone are still likely around 1/2 as stiff as proper lowering springs. So lowering springs will only make the ride even worse. It's ok to just tell people cut springs aren't that safe and leave it a that...

I was surprised to see that you removed the springs to cut them. I guess the kind of person who would cut their springs would not bother to remove them and cut them right on the car. Really, I owned a heavy Merc 190E with a broken and two worn springs for over a year. The only problem I had was over large road bumps but no dangerous moments at all. But when it came to MOT day they quoted me over £1000 for full replacement of them plus the test. That was over 10 years ago and I couldn't be arsed to bother and scrapped it though it still drove smoothly like you would never of known otherwise. God I still miss that car and even my brand new car today can never beat that classic beautiful workhorse.

An exception, vintage Mercedes springs were made to be cut. They've got about 14 coils, they're compressed in their mounts by at least 6-7 inches and they're woefully undersprung from from the factory and the increase in rates is great. You need a special compressor to get them out without exploding your skull and that's a $100 tool. Spend the remaining $100 on beer and pizza and spend some quality time with your angle grinder, just make sure to keep the springs cool or they'll lose their temper. I dropped my '79 300sd by about 3 inches to a roughly 1 finger fender gap and it's one of my favorite mods on that car of which there are many. The only ones that top it are the manual transmission swap, my hood exhaust and the 17" monoblock reps I put on there. Unfortunately it has rust worse than Phil so I'm gonna pull all my fun parts and then scrap it and look for another chassis.

hey, use a ratchet tied from driver to passenger control arm and tighten it until the strut assembly has enough room to work with, itll keep you from loosing any fingers or someone getting their head crushed, it also makes the entire process incredibly easier; just jack it up, take the wheels off, ratchet the control arms and you have easy access, and yes that works with an anti-roll bar, and solves the issue for both sides simultaneously

If you do cut springs, cut from the top not the bottom. I cut mine on my ek and it drove good, you can only notice when you go over speed bump that the shocks bottom out. Other than that, it was good. Corner hard, drive fast and felt good. I wouldn't doubt that your shocks will go out sooner than if you were on proper springs though.

How ironic, asking if people would have sex with a plastic bag. The type of people irresponsible enough to do so are exactly the type of people who would cut their springs (and clearly, cutting springs is a common enough thing to make a video about it).

Depends on the type of coil your cutting. If you car came with progressive springs you can not cut them, if you do you will change the spring rate and the car will bounce. But if the car came with traditional style spring you will not change the spring rate as drastic and the car will drive fine. The only issue is most times the damper will start to bottom out and blow it's seals.

All the car people around me lower their cars, instead I lifted my Volvo 945 Turbo and put on some larger offroad tires and I can assure you that I have way more fun with my car then they ever could with theirs. A serious drifting car might be an exception though. Speed bumps makes you go faster to see how far you can jump, you start cutting corners way outside the tarmac, sometimes into the ditch like a velodrom. If you get the cops on your tail, go offroad and see how far they can follow.

I'm dailying my mk4 Golf with rear springs cut for four years because I'm a cheap bastardad and there were after market tall springs that were stupid and I didn't had money to change them back then and it's no problem. Just needed to put some rubber hoses on the bottom of the springs to stop rattle sounds that occurred every time I went over a pothole.

If it was a progressive spring your riding rough comments would make sense because you would change the geometry and tension of the spring. On a linear spring, cutting a part of it if done right should not make a difference if you match it with the correct shock absorbers. Many hot rod guys used to do it/ still do it on applications where aftermarket springs are not available.

Gatis Girdenis cause the lowering springs have the flat bottom and correct pitch to seat correctly in the a-arm and not pop out.
@iamstd2
@iamstd2 6 жыл бұрын
Gatis Girdenis lowering springs are the same height as a stock spring uncompressed. The difference is that they have a progressive spring rate, which means part of the spring is softer than stock, and the rest is stiffer than stock. So when you put the car back on the ground, the softer part compresses more, thus lowering your car.

I experienced a coil coming off on me once. Right front tire. The strut was bad the shock apparently had no pressure at all so it was just the coil providing shock absorption and I hit a nasty hole and all of a sudden a big boom and thoop and a really weird feeling like choppy. Thought I had a blowout, but it turned out the spring popped off at the bottom and the coil end actually pierced the inner sidewall of the tire and was just shredding it as it moved. Luckily the tires were in need of replacing anyway and I was able to pull a strut off a car from the junkyard for $20. It only took about 30min to change it out. Lesson learned... If your car feels really comfy when you drive and it floats over bumps, your shocks are probably bad.. Mine was not even like together...

I realise that you saying this because there are a lot of lunatics out there but spring is not gonna pop out from the suspension, especialy the coil over one. You can make it sit lower and ride ok but you have to cut the springs in a correct place. That would depend on the spring and the part it sits in. Shock absorbers will last just as long because you've shortened the suspension movement and if you'll hit a speed hump or something in such a way that it will max your suspension travel upwards the impact will be taken by the spring which will callapse fully and then by the suspension mounting points. OR if you've been brave with the grinder and your springs are very short then yes, shock absorbers will come out of the car.

Bs, of course you can drive it. You would obviously put hose clamps so that the springs wont jump out, at least in the back. I daily drive my volvo with barley any rounds left on the spring, works just fine. Know many people that has removed the spring completely aswell. Btw you can cut the springs as they sit in the car.
