This varies per vehicle. What you want to do is fill her up when the warning light comes on (or the fuel gauge reads zero). Memorize the amount of gas you added. It seems it's not as frail as I was led to believe. But I have to wonder, what if it was a diesel engine? I've always heard about how you'd screw up the fuel pump and the fuel injectors by mistakenly using gas in a diesel engine, I've seen videos of people trying this in older cars, but I'm not sure if they had direct or indirect fuel injection. And what about direct injection gas engines? Are they as sensible to running dry as people say diesel ones are? Those high pressure pumps and fuel injectors are way more expensive in DI engines than on indirect ones.

Yeah, about 60km is a good estimate. But that's really stretching it, shortening the lifespan of the battery, and you never get the guarantee it will be that way. Actually this dude who does Tesla tests just recently was stranded in the middle of nowhere because his Tesla was saying it got 14km left but the battery died. But that was because he was pulling a heavy load, and it messed up with the system, since it gives the estimated value based on normal use statistics. Either way I wouldn't feel comfortable with that little range left, would recharge so I have at least 30 km range at all times.

Hmmm... it should be noted that fuel gauges and low fuel lights are not precision instruments, not 'calibrated', and can vary significantly between individual specimen vehicles. Your owners manual may even allude to this fact. Incidentally, running a tank dry, intentionally or otherwise can be rough on catalytic converters, and fuel pumps... and for some vehicles has the potential to make restarting after addition of fuel difficult. (The trick is to turn the key to the 'run' (not start) position, wait 3 or 4 seconds and then off... repeat 20 or 30 times and try starting. If it doesn't start normally, do the switch dance another 10 or so cycles and try again. This allows the fuel pump to bleed trapped air from the fuel line and fuel 'rail' without needless cranking of the engine in the process.)

Quick answer to the headline question: it depends entirely on the car. As in, how much fuel is left in the tank when the gauge starts showing empty, and how good its fuel economy is. I've had cars where you could easily get 50+ miles (in fact one that was so pessimistic I actually got bored whilst running a 10-ish mile loop around local roads to find out where it actually quit, and was about to give up, somewhere far north of 60, when it finally stalled out and I had to, with some relief, top it up from a ready-filled jerrycan to get to the filling station), and others where you would struggle to get 30. Particularly my first where the gauge was extremely optimistic and essentially the point where the needle moved fully into red (not the bottom of the red! oh, also, no warning light...) is the point where it cut out. On the other hand, my bike's gauge is more of a reminder than a proper readout, the range of the needle from "full" to red seems to essentially show the middle third of its capacity (or in other words, a single gallon), with it flatlining at full for at least the first fifty miles, and seeming to go about as long before needing to be switched onto reserve after hitting the absolute bottom of the gauge as it did to go from the top of red to the bottom. Or in other words, if I ride carefully, there's easily fifty miles left in it after the needle goes to empty, and a few more besides (25+) when switched to reserve... My current one, I haven't yet found the limit. It's got a nasty 8-bar digital gauge and estimated range readout neither of which I trust very much, and that make keeping track of where it starts registering "empty" vs where you actually end up refuelling (or breaking down) a bit difficult, plus it starts flipping the overrun cutoff much more harshly amongst other "warning" or last-gasp fuel saving measures that are unpleasant to deal with when in the driver's seat, so I tend not to push my luck with it very much and haven't yet actually run it to the point of stalling. Plus I don't tend to carry a spare can any more because they do rather make a gasoline powered car (which I've ended up having to go back to, from the previous diesels, not for ideological reasons but just because of what was available) smell quite a bit if they're even the tiniest bit leaky. I've had a couple of fills where it took nearly 41 litres (including whatever was in the filler neck, and possibly refilling the lines and filter...) when the tank is officially 40, so it was probably edging close to being completely dry, and it seems to be able to do at least 25-30, so the maximum is probably 35-40...

Once managed to limp my Peugeot 207 from cardiff to bridgend on, according to the gauge, an entirely empty tank, having dropped off 4 friends at 4 entirely different towns sending me in many different directions. I imagine it was probably close to 35-40 miles overall. Just kept smooth as hell on the throttle, kept it to 56 mph where i could and kept as much speed as possible in the corners as to not have to waste petrol speeding up. It was 3 am so the roads were entirely empty, was the most tense thing ive ever done and i walked to town with a petrol can the next morning

Truth or myth by modding the car with performance parts you can beat the new civic type r

I can beat a type r no problem, just shift into reverse and ram my trailer hitch through the grille.

Reminds me of my SiR-T I had back in the day. It had the same gauge cluster. Man I miss that car.

Well, American cars have more pep, which means more fuel consumption, so, I'd say you're right.

When mine hits the fuel warning light I have at least 70 Km to go, and I can keep going even after 0. So 50 miles should be a breeze. Even when I thought I was almost empty and I have filled up I have only been able to fill up 61.5-62 Liters of diesel so I had 2 liters more to go.

I made the exact video a couple days ago!! Stole my idea!!! I got over 60 on a 0 range. Had a gallon left so would have been good for over 100.

try that with my car....gas gauge is a bit screwy LOL...sometimes the low fuel light comes on and sometimes it don't. Sometimes it will go down to 1/8 of a tank and be empty....you just gotta figure about 25MPG average and know how much you put in....when you fill it up, it goes above the F...

If you don’t want to watch the whole thing: Yes, you can get to 99 miles with an empty fuel tank
@harrycoral19107 жыл бұрын
i don´t get it?, how far can you go while on fuel reserve?, i´m not sure but if the reserve is about 10 liter and if you get about 14km/l then aprox. 87~ miles (depends on several factors, like speed, etc)

I would say it can greatly depend on each car... car manufacturers do not want people to drive on empty tanks since it can really damage the engine, especially diesel, since it's the lubricant as far as I know.

I drove a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado at work. It was a delivery truck, so it was driven quite often and got horrible gas mileage. Because of this, I was almost always running on empty. It has almost ran out but it never fully died. Sometimes I went 100 or more miles on empty, sometimes it was actually empty sometimes it was just the fuel gauge being wonky.

Never start a car with no fuel. It will burn out the fuel pump
