If you have the budget and want to do 37”s and up from the get go without messing with the differential gearing ratio, then portals is the way to go. The reduction provided at the hubs is going to even out the load. Ground clearance is awesome. This videos provide a good explanation of what’s all about. But as you can tell the foundation to get this done right is to have a bunch of money ready to do this stuff. Keep up the good work guys!

@DieselRamcharger
@DieselRamcharger 7 ай бұрын
@@petejones6827 Portals increase the clearance in some places, Not all. They increase the axles distance from the ground, but the portal themselves are closer to the ground. Everything, and i do mean everything has trade offs. The crowd that speaks in absolutes is basically fucking clueless. In order to give in one area you must take from another. Its the name of the game. Compromise. Which is why building a dual purpose rig almost ensure its going to suck bigly at one of its intended purposes. This is why dedicated race vehicles and off roaders exist. AKA Trailer Queens. Because simply put, they are better at their single task.

Yea but how fast are you burning through your tires though? Or ball joints and rod ends? Or your power steering pump? The amount of additional force required to turn your 38s on that much of a larger arc is not insignificant. All that force has got to go somewhere. I guess cash really is the best lubricant, if you have it.

What about unsprung weight? "Werewolf portals are made of cast iron steel and weigh in at a whopping 106 lbs per corner in the front and 78 lbs in the rear - 368 lbs total! Weight is a very important factor to consider when looking at each brand. 74Weld is 162 lbs lighter than Werewolf." Did you have custom valving done on your shocks to match the huge increase in weight at the axle?

Stiff small seats and cramped cab forever mark taco as tiny truck to me. It's not as comfortable nor roomy as full size truck, let alone three quarter ton and up truck. I understand point you are getting across that we all give up MPG in exchange for off road capability and there is no free lunch. As awesome as they are, all the added leverage is going to be a problem if your offroad adventures have occasionally resulted in broken driveline parts. Portals are definitely a mod the overlander who has gotten stuck in mud/snow many times, but never broken an axle or tie rod, and want to do deeper. Portals are likely not going to end well for offroaders who like to test their vehicle over crazy obstacles just because its there and bring a pile of spare driveline parts because they often break something. I may be getting soft in my old age and may be more in the overlander category now. It will just be a matter of convincing myself portals will make snow wheeling 20k worth of more fun.
@mtnyotas

It's really quite the opposite of what you're describing... it's a lot friendlier on the drivetrain because the gear reduction occurs at the hub.
@vica153
@vica153 4 ай бұрын
@@mtnyotas The gear reduction only reduces load on your spinning parts. Any loads going into the tire up, front/back, left/right are going amplified by the increased leverages. It's all likely a moot point as 99.9% of offroaders are very casual and do their best to avoid situations that may break anything. The guys that go out with the mission to push things until they break aren't likely to be dropping 20k on portals.

So, if I still have stock 3.73 gears, I shouldn't even bother regearing right? With the 35% gearing decrease it would put me at a 5.05 gear ratio. If so, that makes it much more attainable if I can save the money on a regear.
@mtnyotas

Correct, you definitely don't need a regear when you're on portals!

What is your lift considered height wise? Im ordering portals, but my truck currently has a 6'' lift on it, i plan to run 39's, im curious if it will be huge!! I can lower it if needed, it would just be nice lower during portal install if needed And as far as the landcruiser steering rack, what all did you do for that, did you bump up pump pressure at all to help it alittle?

ha, imagine thinking/marketing that IFS is somehow better for driving "on the highway" or "cross country"... Portals are sweet, and have the same benefits on a solid axle rig.

@@mtnyotas yeah I guess it does ride/handle better... I think it's the phrasing that a lot of people in the Toyota (and now Bronco world) use when comparing IFS to a solid axle, it comes across as if you "can't" highway drive a vehicle with a solid axle. Millions of miles per year are driven on vehicles with solid front axles.

I'd go with 74Weld (3.6" lift from the portals) and keep stock height on the suspension itself. The additional width from the portals helps a lot with stability, it'd be perfect and well planted with 37s. Happy to help you out anytime!

I don't understand why portal isn't used much more on trucks. Often you see a truck on big tires that you think has a lot of ground clearance but looking underneath there's always something that interferes, like differential or lower shock mount...
@huckstirred7112
@huckstirred7112 6 ай бұрын
2 inches of extra tire height will only gain you a half inch to 1 inch of clearance at the pumpkin . Yep 4 inch lift kit and 36 inch tall tires gets an additional 2 inches at the pumpkin . probably an inch and a half because tire manufactures can't read a tape . There are a few reasons nobody wants them . This doesn't apply to independent suspensions . But everything works as a lever .On strait axles That is some serious leverage . Mas times velocity equals momentum . Multiply that by many hundreds of times , only god can comprehend the twisting forces multiplied when a portal is added to a strait front axle . Twisted axle tubes , busted frames , sheared king pins . A traction bar would have to be at least on the same plane as the king pin . Then you lost all advantage farmall b has ten horsepower and the flange to bolt its geared final drive is larger that the outer C on a 5 ton rockwell

It does look cool, but for the majority of people not practical. Upgraded rack an pinion, brakes, power steering pump, brake booster. Your transmission ain't gonna last with the additional transfer of power. Not to mention people who would have to pay a shop to build the rig, and pay for additional maintenance 🤷‍♂️
