If you have the budget and want to do 37”s and up from the get go without messing with the differential gearing ratio, then portals is the way to go. The reduction provided at the hubs is going to even out the load. Ground clearance is awesome. This videos provide a good explanation of what’s all about. As awesome as they are, all the added leverage is going to be a problem if your offroad adventures have occasionally resulted in broken driveline parts. Portals are definitely a mod the overlander who has gotten stuck in mud/snow many times, but never broken an axle or tie rod, and want to do deeper. Portals are likely not going to end well for offroaders who like to test their vehicle over crazy obstacles just because its there and bring a pile of spare driveline parts because they often break something. I may be getting soft in my old age and may be more in the overlander category now. It will just be a matter of convincing myself portals will make snow wheeling 20k worth of more fun.
@mtnyotas4 ай бұрын
It's really quite the opposite of what you're describing... it's a lot friendlier on the drivetrain because the gear reduction occurs at the hub.
@vica1534 ай бұрын
@@mtnyotas The gear reduction only reduces load on your spinning parts. Any loads going into the tire up, front/back, left/right are going amplified by the increased leverages. The guys that go out with the mission to push things until they break aren't likely to be dropping 20k on portals.

I don't understand why portal isn't used much more on trucks. Often you see a truck on big tires that you think has a lot of ground clearance but looking underneath there's always something that interferes, like differential or lower shock mount...

2 inches of extra tire height will only gain you a half inch to 1 inch of clearance at the pumpkin . Yep 4 inch lift kit and 36 inch tall tires gets an additional 2 inches at the pumpkin . probably an inch and a half because tire manufactures can't read a tape . There are a few reasons nobody wants them . This doesn't apply to independent suspensions . But everything works as a lever .On strait axles That is some serious leverage . Mas times velocity equals momentum . Multiply that by many hundreds of times , only god can comprehend the twisting forces multiplied when a portal is added to a strait front axle . Twisted axle tubes , busted frames , sheared king pins . A traction bar would have to be at least on the same plane as the king pin . Then you lost all advantage farmall b has ten horsepower and the flange to bolt its geared final drive is larger that the outer C on a 5 ton rockwell

What’s the noise level at. I imagine it would be loud because of straight cut gears.
@mtnyotas8 ай бұрын
It’s not as loud as the Procharger with straight cut gears and it’s about the same noise level as running big MT tires.

Kkkk, A Infiniti 4x4 shop. Yeah I’m lifting my 2011 QX56 into a pre runner, the Infinite Mountain shop

I’m convinced I would love to do this to my taco. Can I get portals on my 2006 2nd gen taco?
@mtnyotas8 ай бұрын
You can indeed, but it'll cost a little more because we'd have to get some custom axle shafts for you from CVJ. Email us info@mountainyotas.com if you're serious about it!

It does look cool, but for the majority of people not practical. Upgraded rack an pinion, brakes, power steering pump, brake booster. Your transmission ain't gonna last with the additional transfer of power. Not to mention people who would have to pay a shop to build the rig, and pay for additional maintenance 🤷♂️
@mtnyotas8 ай бұрын
Transmission doesn’t feel a thing… gear reduction at the hubs means that none of the drivetrain is strained from the tires/weight.

Man at a 40k truck + 20k price point for portals + suspension + body work you are in raptor territory with a 3rd of the hp haha looks sick though

Except you don't have to own a raptor..

Raptor's got nothin' on this beast, unless you're racing. This rig is for trails and rock crawling; both of which it dominates the Raptor doing.
