Agreed... if you're out there mobbing, your suspension will get the kind of workout that the higher end shocks with reservoirs supply however, if you're a Rock Crawler... the Bilsteen setup is more than sufficient. Now... how long will it take before we shed the useless truck bed and turn it into a "Truggy"... now that's a wheeling rig!!! I'm also grateful that you didn't decide on FJ's... those things are too wide with horrible blind spots, more of a trail buggy not a wheeler.

For the money the low truck is a great set up for your average weekend kind of off roading most people do. The real test in my opinion is the long term durability. If you are having to rebuild that set up every 20K miles, are you really saving money? A lot of the higher end kits will easily push 60K-70K miles in a life time before having to be rebuilt or replaced.

7:49 True, a body lift doesn't give you anymore suspension travel or ground clearance for the frame. However, a body lift does give the body more ground clearance so it is less likely to get hung up on obstacles. Body lifts also allow for larger tires and we all know the benefits of larger tires.

When I redid the springs on my Old Man Emu coilovers in front, I just used the weight of the truck on the springs to compress them for disassembly. Once it was all loose, I simply jacked the truck up, undid the lower shock mount bolt, and it all came out safely. Did the opposite for Installing a softer spring. With no spring compressor or flying parts, I had it all together safely and without worry.

7:42 A body lift gives your tires more clearance between tire and body when turning or under full compression. A body lift really does help more than just the appearance of being higher.
@ShaunWidner3 жыл бұрын
I came down to the comments hoping that someone had addressed this. Additionally, a body lift can allow for fitment of larger tires, thus creating more ground clearance. Now, I seriously doubt that anyone would suggest that body lifts are in any way superior to a suspension lift (other than typically being extremely affordable), just that they can serve more of a purpose than being purely aesthetic.
@Racko943 жыл бұрын
They also help keep the center of gravity lower, and less geometry shifting. Though, for what they are doing with it, a body lift would really be more for extra clearance than anything else.

Other then running bigger tires for "aesthetics" (how vain) larger tires even just going from 31"s - 33"s makes such a big difference on being able to get over obstacles it really can warrant the use of a body lift. @6:00 The main purpose for a reservoir is to keep the nitrogen gas charge in the shock separate from the shock fluid in the shock body. There is a piston in the shock body that holds the compression and rebound shim stacks. With a reservoir the piston will only move through shock fluid while moving up and down. This makes the shocks response much more predictable since the fluid is constant. There is a separate floating piston in the reservoir that separates the high pressure gas from the shock fluid and ensures that the shock body is completely filled with just the shock fluid. A shock without a reservoir is referred to as an emulsion shock because the gas is together with the fluid which makes the performance of the shock suffer as the piston travels through the shock fluid and the gas together. The little bit of cooling you will get from the added fluid volume is not worth the extra cost of a reservoir. It’s all about adding more control and better more predictable performance.
