I have over 10k in 3 months on my gladiator running 38’s. Gear noise is not an issue, all terrain tires make way more noise than the portals. I daily drive and made long trips this summer. I live in Oklahoma and traveled in 105+ temperatures while at 75-85 mph. No issues at all with over heating the portals. As far as oil changes, I change my engine oil at 3k instead of the recommended 5k. I change the portal oil at the same time,it can’t hurt anything changing engine oil early. Fuel mileage is 12-13 mpg but hell I didn’t buy a Jeep for fuel mileage or for a quiet cab. Love the way it drives and handles on and off road.

Customer here. 5th gen T4R. Yes to everything said in this video. I daily with 37s. I’ve road tripped at 85mph for hours in plus 100 degrees. I have had absolutely zero compromising experiences here. I’m was already supercharged with 4:56’s on 33s. But even at ridiculously high Texas speeds and heat zero drivability or noise issues on portals and 37s. I’ve done 3,000 mile road trips high speed highway being 3/4 of it. My little fat pig of a rig drives like a dream. Only downside is formerly challenging trails seem like the mall. I’m never selling my T4R but the first mod on next rig will be 74 Weld portals. Think about it - portals plus tire upgrade and bam. Done. 6-7 inches of freaking clearance gained. Quinn- just waiting for my steering rack kit.

Daily drive a 6G Bronco on Portals. Recent roadtrip to Moab and at the first fuel up after driving 80-85 mph. Rear portals at 160F rear diff at 192F. Front portals 91F front diff (32 spline spicer) 212F. All running new Maxima full synthetic oil. 75W140 in differentials as recommended by Dana. 75W90 in portals to 74Weld spec. No discernible noise in any capacity and currently averaging a little over 14mpg on 40’s. Adaptive cruise works, lane control works, and one finger steering. Not a problem at all to daily

Ha! Just finished the video. There is one section of road where the portals can be heard at 40 mph. Radio has gotta be off and can’t be accelerating or the exhaust will hide it. Any faster and the tire noise takes over. 😂

Love the idea of portals but will there ever be a point when the gear oil changes will be more than every 3k? Tire rotation is usually 5k and my oil changes are 10k on synthetic. Also, as an Overlander how does the portal handle water? Any changes in fuel mileage good or bad?
@74weld
@74weld Ай бұрын
@@bryzhouse8163 we are moving more towards 5K changes and don’t see this being a problem. Water is not a problem as long as your vent lines are working. We have done some deep water crossings with zero issues. As for fuel economy, the portal doesn’t hurt it 99.8% efficiency due to the rolling design of straight cut gears…but the larger tire you are inevitably going to run does hurt mileage.

@@74weld Thanks for the response, I agree on the tire as I’m a truck driver and rolling resistance is everything for better fuel mileage in a semi along with average highway speed.

@@74weld not to mention the lift from the portals tend to reduce mileage just because more tire is exposed to air, check out the air dam testing for why the Ford's Air dam is so DAMN huge on their truck, how much it effects on portals is probably little to none, likely just the exact same as any lift

I'm just waiting for you guys to offer a product for the rear axle 8 lug chevy vehicles (silverado and suerra 2500 HD, 3500, Express van 3500, etc). I have a RWD in build process and I have a solution for the front tires (no big problem since those have no traction currently). Th3 thing is that I want to have all the advantages of true hogher ground clearance and if I get the front portal like hubs to get that ground clearance but only use a regular lift in the back, I would loose all the advantages of the front

@@74weld awesome to hear!!! I'm just north of Sacramento right off Interstate 5 if you need a ZR2 1500 to borrow. Besides all that, I read you're thinking fronts only, that's so much better than none at all. However I have to say, if it's for the ZR2 trucks, those factory shocks are pretty damn impressive, I've beat the shit out of mine and they work and feel the same as they did the first day I got them. Secondly, the rear portal would be amazing on the Chevy's as well since they sadly have terrible placement for their shocks on the axle, that's been a concern on the 1500's and 2500's for a long long time. I understand if their straight axle in the rear and how it's designed ads a ton of complexity, but I would love for you to at least consider doing both. Also you can easily buy the steel chevy performance drive shaft if that matters, it's under $1000, I put one on mine. Thanks again for making such an accessible product!

Y’all will think I’m crazy… but there is a market for portals on the new Honda Pilot Trailsport. Yeah, I know… it sounds dumb, but there really is no good lift kit for these vehicles, and they are surprisingly capable. I’d really buy a portal set so I could run 35’s safely.

Would there be any benefit to having the gearsets within the portals REM polished ?
@74weld
@74weld Ай бұрын
@@tr0nix1 not really. That is a very long conversation for another video but I don’t believe in it. Now micro peening yes, but rem can be detrimental in my experience. It makes it shiny, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to being a good thing. I’ve seen a R&P setup, then torn down, rem polished, and it never got a good pattern after polishing. Now maybe it was done wrong, but it setup fine before REM. And since we don’t see gear failure and REM is super expensive I don’t see the benefit

Your way low at $3,000 but yes $20,000 is definitely premium. Though i think if there were more competition in the market $10,000 would be more practical price and i know they could easily do it for $15,000 plus shipping with the market as is and walk away with a tidy profit.

@@mikelmarion nope…the gear set would probably not live. We originally set out to do 3.5” but ended at 3.88. Going smaller is going to give up too much strength. When you go less lift the gears shrink in size and you lose too much strength.

Yeah I also would like to move to 5K oil changes. I do engine oil and tire rotation every 5K. 3k oil changes on the portals just throws everything off. Also I would like to point out a minor gripe about the oil plugs. Those stupid rubber gaskets. If I tighten the plugs just enough that I don't crush the rubber gaskets oil leaks out. If I tighten so that oil doesn't leak then the rubber gasket is all deformed and I'm still not getting a good seal. I just gave up and took all the rubber gaskets off.

How much HP & Torque are your Portal sets rated for? Racing and non Racing ect
@74weld
@74weld Ай бұрын
@@48Troll those numbers only tell a fraction of the story. I could give that to you but without context it’s pointless. What I will say is they handle a 392 with 40’s. They also seem to be totally fine with the Ranger raptor and the FP tune numbers with 37’s. The size tire you run and your willingness to bounce on the vehicle has so much more to do with destruction of parts than HP. Prime example…a drag car with 2000hp might be fine with a ford 9” rear wnd while a 6100 race truck with 500hp will blow up that same rear end in 30 minutes. To date, nobody has successfully broken a gear set in 2.5 years over multiple platforms and our best seller is a 392 Jeep Wrangler looking to run 40’s
