My thoughts? I'm glad you asked Ray. Hypothetically speaking, let's say I had an 07 ram 3500 with the 6.7 and G56 transmission. Bone stock it got 14.8 mpg. After a weight loss regimen and tuning it got 23.7 mpg, hand calculated. It doesn't take a genius to realize that almost half of the fuel consumption is better for the environment than a DPF filter.

Seems very odd that you saw such a big change in mpg’s. Hypothetically, someone else that did the some modifications to their exhaust system on both a 2014 and 2017 and didn’t see a measurable change might find this odd. That someone probably got over 20mpg, also hand calculated, when in all stock form. 🤷‍♂️

In 2015, my family business purchased 3 2015 F250s. 2 of them gassers and one a diesel. The 2 gassers are now each over 300k miles with very few problems and still running great. The diesel is no longer around after spending 10,000 on it. Replaced it with a 2023 F250 gasser and that has been problem free with about 50k miles on it now. Gassers are cheaper to maintain and run better longer. I've never needed more power than the gas engine can provide. I tow a lot of stuff from dump trailers to tractors, skid steers, cars, boats, jet skis, riding mowers, and a lot of other stuff.

The problem is that Congress didn’t make the rules for the Clean Air Act, the EPA did. Back in the late summer, SCOTUS ruled on government agencies creating laws and how it’s unconstitutional. Congress itself never made ANY of those laws so they were ruled unconstitutional. I understand a business owner who is trying to cover their ass, but this is a done deal.

The Supreme Court has made no such ruling taking away what the CAA says about tampering with vehicle emissions systems. The Supreme Court ruled against Chevron Doctrine. Reversal of the Chevron Doctrine does not automatically allow people to legally delete emissions equipment. It will take further court cases for the Chevron Doctrine reversal to be used as a tool to legalize deleting.

I think the main argument against these emission systems is the environmental impact they create. The mining and manufacturing processes for all these components-especially those involving precious metals-come at a significant cost. Additionally, the accelerated rate of part replacements and engine failures due to oil dilution from extended fuel injector cycles adds to the problem. Not to mention, the production of DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) introduces even more waste, including cardboard boxes and plastic jugs. I can’t get a plastic straw for my drink, yet every DEF jug comes with one-how does that even make sense? On top of that, we all know that these emission systems have drastically affected fuel economy. It was once common for a 1-ton truck to get over 20 miles per gallon before these systems were implemented. Now, no matter how efficiently an engine burns fuel, that efficiency is offset by the fuel wasted during DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) regeneration.
@Bloodbain88
@Bloodbain88 9 күн бұрын
Don't forget downtime while these systems are getting diagnosed and repaired, and the costs involved there. Not just in the bill you receive, but the time the truck is sitting there not making any money. It's now common for larger companies to buy several "backup trucks" that they will do the work while others are in the shop. But even then, I've seen companies almost ground to a halt when their main trucks AND backups are all derated and getting towed. It's gotten totally out of control.

I have been saying the same thing. If diesel exhaust pollutes so much then why is it not mandatory for the government like it is for everyone else. They don't want emissions systems on their stuff because they know it's unreliable. It's ok for them to pollute but not anyone else. Do as I say not as I do. I have a 2012 Cummins pre DEF and have had nothing but problems with mine. It left me stranded multiple times. One time 4 hours away from my home. I also had it go into limp mode at the beginning of my road. I have to take my 6.0 gas Silverado and pull it to my house when the truck was only 3 years old at the time and only had 60k on it. My DPF was plugged and my EGR valve was stuck open. Luckily one of my buddies has a DPF filter laying around so I traded him and got my EGR cleaned and had a spare for my ride home just in case. I priced out a DPF and it was $2600, EGR valve was $800 and the EGR cooler was $1100. That is absolutely ridiculous. I think emissions were added because they didn't want people to have such a reliable motor. If the motor never breaks the government doesn't make any money off of them. It's all a giant scam thanks to the government. What they need to do is learn how to properly tune a diesel motor. If the motor is tuned correctly it will put out very little smoke and get really good mpg.

Coming from the heavy equipment and emergency vehicle side here in the arctic climate up north, it is critical that the Trump Administration work to make modern diesel emission components "OPTIONAL" for the user. This has been an absolute nightmare for far too long, and it has not gotten much better over the years. We are still receiving brand new heavy equipment at times that still won't work correctly due to emissions problems. Million dollar machines that are critical for the safety of airfield operations sit sidelined when needed during snow storms, others have to have parked regen cycles taking the machine out of service and needing monitored because it isn't functioning as it's supposed too, the incalculable amount of waste of additional diesel fuel being burned during the regen process, or the machine sits and idles for hours on end after being abandoned while its regening which ironically produces a huge amount of totally unnecessary pollution, the expense of mechanics working and wasting valuable time dealing with problems, and addition electronic computers and devices to work on these machines, the additional expense of buying more machines to make up for all the unnecessary breakdowns related to the emission components, operators having to run to get another machine in a snow storm in a hurry, and I've even had a few of my employees suffer work related injuries because they were frustrated and trying to HURRY to get another machine up and running and into the fight, etc...etc...etc... I could go on and on and on. I've been doing this for over 30 years, and this is an extremely serious safety problem that must be addressed by the Trump administration immediately. Critical snow removal equipment on airfields and emergency vehicles needs to be exempt effective immediately, and everything needs to be made OPTIONAL going forward.

First it was DEFpump, heater/sender unit, then EGR cooler, and valve, then Pump and sender again(2500 $), then DEF quality, then dealer say SCR or Nox sensors bad and wants 12000 to replace. I said no and took the truck. Then idle mode happened, and truck required a flat bed to get back to camp. That's when I became the EPA's worst nightmare, and "lightened" my truck. I have an 03 6.0 powerstroke. It's not restricted. It has smog system egr and does pass emission in California fine. But when I bought it stock in 2012, I was getting 17 mpg just general driving. Our California fuels formulation changed like California always does and I lost 4 mpgs. The California fuels change went National. Fueled in Nevada and farther west I got the 17mpg again. Before National reformulation like California. The engine checked out running as built. After hitting 160,000 miles and noticing a little cold start stiction. I added Revex oil additive and it cleaned up first oil added. I did gain 2 mpg just from the slick additive. No surprise. I decided to do all the suggested systems and hardware upgrades to "harden" the 6.0s problems. Engine wear was very minimal. So running as intended. I added a tuner with different settings. I tried the fuel milage power tune. I did get back to 17 mpg. But because I use the truck for heavy hauling almost exclusively I keep it on stock. It stays at the 13-14 mpg again. It has around 200,000 miles now. All tow miles between a rock crawler trailer and 5th wheel. Car trailer 8500 lbs loaded and the 5th wheel16,000lbs. Most towing miles are 5th wheel. I do get 9 mpg towing the 5th Wheel and only get a little better with the car trailer. usually 10mpg. That hasn't changed since I bought the truck for some reason. I blame the fuels that the bureaucrat "scientists" have forced on the market. All the ridiculous hardware causing a minimal amount of cleaning after a very efficient computer controlled engine, is a big factor I understand. inefficiency is not excusable for the restricted trucks. If overall pollution minimization was the real concern. But the fuels they now have nation wide is real crap from the original fuels un molested. Some good things of it but buried by over complicated other things. In my opinion They should start over and see what they can now do from no systems with their new tech. And see what we could really do for fuel consumption and minimizing over all pollution from our trucks. The weight loss, cradle to grave of pollution from added device manufacturing and forced assembly. Should be calculated into the over all life time amount of pollution. I bet it adds way more over all pollution than they actually say they remove.

Environmental impact goes beyond air quality from a tail pipe. Extra fuel burned, more parts consumed, more systems of parts required, lost wages/increased repair costs. Extra fuel burned creates pollution across a whole spectrum from the new dpf choked pickup to all the equipment to produce and distribute fuel...which also has lower fuel economy due to emissions equipment. Then you have the pollution from factories making new systems of parts to put on the newer vehicles. You have to mine and process raw materials to not only make the parts systems, but also to manufacture replacement parts for when these problematic systems need repair/replacement. I'm sure I'm leaving out a lot of details, but at what point is all the extra pollution from all the extra involved equipment not recognized to be worse for the environment than if a deleted truck just had a good clean tune?

Girlfriend just spent $2000 to have the intake manifold replaced on her 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Eco diesel. The EGR system caused the intake to be carboned up so much that the intake variable valve system couldn't function. Fuel economy went down, and the intake was destroyed to the point of non-functional at 160,000 miles. The DPF has had issues, the EGR cooler had to be replaced under warranty, the DEF system has been replaced due to crystalization. Every emissions part has pretty much failed on this car. If the EGR system is not deleted the new intake manifold will also be destroyed.

So here’s my gripe with the diesel engine emissions control equipment. It was implemented during the Obama administration that’s strike one of it being a corrupt EPA overreach. It actually burns more fuel to clean itself out than a deleted diesel had to burn all the time, that’s strike two. It doesn’t last much longer than the warranty period and is designed to fail as soon as the warranty expires that’s strike three and you’re out. The thing is this stuff was designed when diesel technology wasn’t to far from the pre emission days. Diesel injection technology has advanced way more by this point. It to the point now that they tested the emissions from a deleted modern diesel, and one with the emissions equipment still intact, and found that the levels of NO2 gases coming out were the exact same. The only thing the emissions equipment does is captures the carbon soot out of the exhaust and collects it letting it clog up every filter and EGR and DEF injector on the thing. That’s what the real problem is. Once it plugs up and can’t breathe then your engine performance tanks. You can’t collect the soot it needs to be able to exhaust the soot out with the rest of it, so it can breathe. Nothing the law was made by people who have no idea how a diesel engine works to begin with. It’s all just another government overreach for more control on us and our freedoms to enjoy our vehicles the way we want to it’s how they want to allow us too. So I say with the advancements in diesel injection technology, piston design, 24 valves, and computer controlled fuel injectors, and Common Rail fuel delivery systems, we no longer need the emissions control equipment.

Base line is using emissions equipment means my truck has to work way harder and will produce more toxins and pollutants in order to reach whatever speed I’m accelerating up to compared to a deleted truck which while yes it will potentially blow some black smoke if it’s getting old and the tune is not so good but it’s releasing significantly less pollution this way

To get down to a technical level. You are not breaking the law by deleting the vehicle after the stated mileage/years have been met. The ambiguity in the wording does not clarify any specific ruling or procedure that must be followed. On a side note I live in Texas where they no longer require emissions (unless you live in 3 specific counties) so fuck them sideways my truck has been deleted and will stay that way.

I’m one who loves the tech. I’m not for rolling back these emission standards. The fuel efficiency and reliability once you understand these system and do everything to keep them running reliably just adds to the bottom line. These truck require a lot of proactive maintenance. I do think it’s nuts to have these system in pick ups. Semis with good fuel additives and some dpf preventative cleaning and and eye cleaning in on my 2nd truck I’m 630,000 miles in issue free.

Problem, executive orders are temporary and/or can be eliminated by the next administration. Congress needs to lock in some kind of congressional oversite and control over the alphabet soup agencies that often rewrite the laws by imposing new rules that could be argued are in contradiction or over reach of the original laws, acts etc. Additionally executive orders should not be able to side step our laws and constitution. With regard to vehicles over 10 years old there should be a mercy rule or some outlet for the common customer to allow a vehicle to be fixed without the need for 1,000's of dollars in repairs. Insurance companies would just total the vehicle if the cost of repair is over 50% - 80% of the value. I think these older vehicles will be needed by those that can't spend 100k dollars on new ones.

The question lies in the Supreme Court striking down the Chevron doctrine, and the EPA defining their own rules beyond what the law passed by Congress and signed by the president based on that Chevron doctrine. Originally the clean air act meant something, and now decades later it has come to mean far more. In most cases those weren't laws. They were interpretations of laws and that practice used to be implicitly allowed under Chevron doctrine. Now they aren't. But that does not mean those interpretations are null and void.

In the meantime, I can continue driving, but it is always on constant regen mode. Luckily, I stopped by dealer yesterday and was informed that the filter arrived earlier that day. I have an appointment for Monday to have it installed. We’ll see how long this one lasts. Very thankful still under warranty. So I can’t wait for new laws to pass.

I just don't want to be required to buy and maintain on my vehicle any emissions equipment that US government vehicles don't have. There are two different standards, and it isn't right. This whole thing started with LA smog and the South Coast Air Quality Management Department. Yes, the L.A. smog is gone but California has forced at least 1/2 of vehicles worldwide to be more complicated and more expensive to buy and operate. I demand the ability to buy vehicles equipped exactly the same emission equipment the US government buys whether for the N.P.S. or Air Force.

If I understand right....a diesel that burns hot and clean has higher nox output right? So to lower nox output, timing is altered and egr is used to cool cylinder burn temps(less fresh air, poorer, aka cooler burn). But this creates more soot/unburnt fuel, so a dpf is required to burn off the fuel vapors. Kinda like engines are set up to fail, hoping for some longevity, while the tail pipe smells good. Definitely not tuned for max efficiency and longevity.

Not sure & nobody seems to have the proper answer. My truck has less than 17k miles but I like that's it's clean air but it lowers reliability & HP on my truck from what I've discovered. We'll see how it goes I've been making changes like decreased from 130+lbs stock tires & rims after putting 3600miles I switched to 81lbs Nittos & KMC tires/rims & also I installed K&N intake filter & eventually I need to change suspension & I'm getting a Holley mod plug in(Diablosport or Pulsar).

What burns my britches is the diesel trains that run behind my house all day have no emissions equipment, I smell it and see the smoke, and they burn more fuel in a day than my truck burns in a year. The port is a few miles from my house, you should see the black smoke pouring from the smoke stacks of the ships that operate there daily. In particular one that runs back and forth between S. FL and the Bahamas on few-day cruises, there is always black smoke pouring from that thing even when it's docked. The best approach to moving ahead is the cost vs. benefits achieved. In the past 20+ years the EPA and especially CARB do not factor in the costs, as far as I am aware of. Considering the benefits and overall long term ownership needs of newer trucks and cars, it apparent that CARB doesn't care that their rules are also damaging engines, causing them to have short lifespan and much worse MPG. Everywhere an owner looks, there's a maintenance expense added, repair expense, cost to operate increase, DEF and other purchases to maintain emissions all along the path of ownership. The added expenses do not in any way justify the gains. Once those EPA/CARB experts include cost benefits in their methods and rules, much of what the public get out of lower emissions will make some financial sense. Besides, as we all know, just about every vehicle made within the past 20 or so years are clean and no longer are a pollution problem like we had in the 1960's and 1970's. Industry pollutes more than vehicles do these days...

In a sustainability class I took while pursuing my engineering degree, I did a study on the greenhouse gas emissions over the lifetime of vehicles from manufacturing to disposal. All internal combustion engine vehicles were far "greener" than EV's. Diesels were far better than gas burners because of their increased fuel mileage and life expectancy in miles. All pre-emission vehicles are better than any new vehicle because they will not produce the emissions in operating them for another 50 years that just goes into manufacturing a new one. If you want to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, either force China and India to follow the same commercial regulations we have in the U.S., or bring manufacturing back here where we have cleaner factories. And build more nuclear power plants. There is not enough land in the country to build enough solar and wind farms to produce more power than just a few nuclear plants.

It's just ridiculous and sad our governments war on diesels.. As countries like China, India and Russia pollute at high levels with zero worry while we hang ourselves with very questionable science and over regulation. Current diesel emission systems are way to complex and expensive.. They significantly shorten the lives of what could be incredibly long lives with reliability. I don't believe I'm alone in not wanting to pollute the air, but the OEMs need to come up with emissions systems that are: 1. Way less complex(I think there are no less than 12 plugs on my Ford exhaust) 2. Easily serviceable by a home mechanic. 3. Non detrimental to the life of the engine(think EGR feeding soot back into the engine). In 2027 they want even stricter emissions? These bureucrats love to make rules about things they know nothing to little about. It's like when you hear some of them talk about firearms... it's crystal clear that some(not all) have never owned, shot, or been educated about firearms; yet they pat themselves on the back when they put inane restrictions on the American public. Have I thought of switching to gas and be done spending all this money? Sure; but there is something that is rarely brought up that is a sticking point to me: One thing I love about my truck is the fact that I have an aftermarket tank in the bed with an additional 45 gallons of fuel. That really boosts the range of my truck a great deal. Yes, I could do an auxiliary tank with a gasser, but.. personally, I feel much more comfortable with an additional tank full of diesel in the bed behind me than a tank full of gasoline. Call me paranoid, that's how I feel.
